3 What is Lifespan Respite Washington? Lifespan Respite Washington (LRW) began in 2002 as a coalition of concerned caregivers and representatives from organizations serving caregivers and their families. The Arc of King County, provided staffing support for the coalition for many years. In 2004, the Paul Allen Foundation provided the funding backbone for developing some key resources and conduct a survey of caregivers to determine their needs. In 2010, the group was awarded its first Lifespan Respite federal grant, growing the coalition from about six to 500 interested persons. In 2013, LRW was awarded a subsequent grant to develop a pilot respite voucher system in Washington State serving all unserved family caregivers and their families of all ages and all situations where special needs exist and where respite is absent. Funding came from the federal Administration on Aging, Administration for Community Living, through the Washington State Department of Social & Health Services (DSHS)/Aging & Long-Term Support Administration. Easter Seals Washington, currently provides support to the mission/goals of Lifespan Respite Washington. Current initiatives include: 1. Coalition Development - statewide 2. Respite Summit in Fall, 2014 (Camp Stand by Me, Kitsap County) 3. Community Awareness campaign valuing the caregiver 4. Sustainability Planning gaining momentum for continued respite support Reference the website, for more information about the history and programs related to respite (short breaks) for family caregivers. 200 West Mercer Street, Suite 210E Seattle, WA info@wa.easterseals.com iii
