1 Founder and President SANDLER OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE ASSOCIATES, INC. OVERVIEW Dr. Sandler has a long and distinguished career in regulation, health care delivery systems, research and problem solving in occupational and environmental health. Dr. Sandler founded Sandler Occupational Medicine Associates, Inc. (SOMA) as a response to business, labor s and government s need for quality, service-oriented approaches to address the many scientific, programmatic and regulatory issues across a broad range of problems in occupational and environmental health. Dr. Sandler has served as a Medical Officer with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). He has also consulted extensively with the EPA, OSHA, NIOSH and the Consumer Products Safety Commission, as well as state and local governmental agencies. EDUCATION Dr. Sandler received his Bachelor s degree from the University of Maryland with honors. He was elected to a number of honorary societies including Phi Beta Kappa. He also graduated from the University of Maryland, School of Medicine. Dr. Sandler performed various research at the National Institutes of Health including neurotoxicology and vinyl chloride carcinogenicity screening markers. He was trained in occupational and environmental medicine while serving as a medical officer with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. NOTED ACHIEVEMENTS Dr. Sandler has developed a wide range of criteria for regulation and consensus standards, performed risk assessments and epidemiological research as well as, designed, implemented and managed numerous programs in occupational and environmental health. Serving as medical advisor to both government and private industry, including many Fortune 500 firms, Dr. Sandler s expertise and experience in occupational and environmental health encompasses design and management of occupational health care delivery and information management systems, causation assessment, medical standards for worker placement and treatment, musculoskeletal disorders, ergonomics, cancer, reproductive effects, respiratory diseases, immunotoxicity, indoor air quality, microbiologics, medical monitoring and surveillance and neurobehavioral effects, among others. Additionally, he has been instrumental in providing scientific liaison with governmental actions and studies. He has provided testimony before the US Congress, state legislative bodies and regulatory agencies frequently. Dr. Sandler lectures and teaches widely, publishes extensively and has served as a contributor and editor to several texts and periodicals in the field. 2 Richard S. Blume, M.D., M.P.H. F.A.C.P.M. (Occupational Medicine) Director, Professional Resources SANDLER OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE ASSOCIATES, INC. OVERVIEW Dr. Richard S. Blume is a residency-trained, board-certified specialist in occupational and environmental medicine. He holds degrees in medicine, public health and engineering. He has practiced at Sandler Occupational Medicine Associates (SOMA) in this specialty and has held a variety of titles since He is licensed to practice medicine in New York State, and operates from SOMA s New York area office. He is a fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine, and a member of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Dr. Blume received his postgraduate training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and served as a military medical officer prior to obtaining his residency in occupational medicine. He has experience in a broad range of areas pertaining to occupational and environmental health including: clinical occupational medicine, toxicology, regulatory compliance, medical standards development, workplace infectious disease protocol development/management, epidemiology, risk assessment, medical record review and analysis, and medical case management. He regularly works with persons of various professional backgrounds and specialties including physicians, nurses, toxicologists, industrial hygienists, public health specialists, health and safety personnel, claims managers, and corporate managers. His areas of expertise include medical program development and management, occupational disease and injury assessment, medical case management, occupational health protocol development including infectious disease management, scientific literature review and assessment, medical surveillance, medical costs/life expectancy projections, and epidemiologic study implementation/analysis. Dr. Blume has developed management guidelines for occupational injury and illness claims, performed numerous scientific reviews in areas relating to occupational and environmental health, performed critiques of standards and proposed standards, and has participated in the design of programs and web-based systems for job-related medical standards and work-related examinations. 3 Dennis C. Ertel, Jr., CIH, REM Chief Operating Officer SANDLER OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE ASSOCIATES, INC. OVERVIEW Dennis C. Ertel, Jr., CIH, REM, was appointed the Chief Operating Officer of Sandler Occupational Medicine Associates (SOMA) in June Prior to that assignment, he was the Director of SOMA s Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology Division, since August Mr. Ertel is a Certified Industrial Hygienist with over 17 years experience in evaluating and controlling a wide range of health hazards in the workplace. Mr. Ertel operates from SOMA s Washington DC Area office and manages industrial hygiene projects and programs, performs training, research, and general consultation for environmental, health and safety issues. His technical projects with SOMA include industrial hygiene consulting, indoor air quality projects, microbiological contamination evaluations, exposure modeling projects, risk assessments and research for or various clients including, but not limited to governmental facilities, legal firms, commercial office space, residential construction, health care facilities, manufacturing facilities, laboratory facilities, and mines and quarries. EDUCATION Bachelor of Arts, Environmental Science, University of Virginia Will complete a Masters of Public Health, with an emphasis in Occupational and Environmental Health, at the George Washington University Medical Center in late 2008 NOTED ACHIEVEMENTS Mr. Ertel has managed an industrial hygiene sampling project including noise, silica, diesel particulate, welding fume and asphalt fume sampling involving over 300 aboveground quarries and underground mines. He has evaluated microbiological contamination on hundreds of projects and has collected thousands of samples for fungi and bacteria. Mr. Ertel also has extensive experience in the decontamination of cultural property and historic buildings that have been impacted by abnormal fungi growth and other chemical or particulate contamination issues. He has also been involved in providing expert witness services for litigation related to occupational exposures. Mr. Ertel is also periodically a guest lecturer or small group instructor for Masters level classes at the George Washington University School of Public Health Services.
