2 Medical & Recreational Marijuana: Will Your Substance Abuse Prevention Program Go Up In Smoke? Wednesday, February 21, a.m. noon Eastern Marijuana is now legal medically in nearly 30 states and is legal recreationally in eight states plus DC. State law, and case decisions, vary significantly in terms of what protections for use employers must provide for workers, what constitutes impairment, and what tests may be used. OSHA also has a new rule, classifying some post-injury drug testing as a possible violation of its new e-recordkeeping rule and Section 11(c) of the OSH Act. This presentation will address unique issues in developing and implementing a successful substance abuse prevention program, the latest legal developments, OSHA s new requirements, and more. Our Presenter Adele L. Abrams, Esq., CMSP, is an attorney and Certified Mine Safety Professional who is president of the Law Office of Adele L. Abrams P.C. in Maryland, Colorado, and West Virginia. 3 From Knowing to Doing: Getting the Most Out Of Your Safety Training Efforts Wednesday, March 21, a.m. noon Eastern For years, the delivery of information has been the method of choice for inviting safe employee behaviors. Unfortunately it has become clear that there is a huge difference between what employees know and what they do with what they know. While information certainly has value, its impact is influenced not only by the quantity of content delivered, but also by HOW the content is developed, delivered, supported, and received. In this session, Michael Melnik introduces REP: The Rational, Emotional, and Physical approach to effective training. This fun, high-energy session takes a humorous look at training and offers insights and strategies for training that not only influence what participants know, but also what they do with what they know. Our Presenter Michael Melnik is an occupational therapist with a master s degree in exercise physiology. He is owner and president of Prevention Plus, a company that focuses on helping organizations energize their programs and people. For more than 25 years, he has shared his practical, high-energy, and powerful approach with over half a million participants around the world. Some of his clients include Best Buy, Wells Fargo, Exxon Mobil, Coca-Cola, Home Depot, General Mills, Wal- Mart and many others. His goal is to work with companies that want to create a safe, healthy, and productive workplace and want to enjoy the process of making it happen. 4 Use Leading Indicators to Drive Employee Injury Prevention Wednesday, April 25, a.m. noon Eastern Traditional occupational safety metrics, lagging indicators, track employee injuries. Lagging indicators are backward-looking and trigger reactive management actions. Shifting more focus to events and data indicating unsafe conditions, weak management systems, and at-risk employee behaviors allows a more proactive approach to safety, geared toward taking action before injuries have occurred. Such leading indicators track the precursors to injuries and should be the focus of daily safety efforts. This webinar will discuss leading versus lagging indicators and provide examples from healthcare settings of various kinds to illustrate the practical use of leading indicators as a vital part of your safety management system. Our Presenters Cloyd Hyten, PhD, is director of safety solutions at Aubrey Daniels International, Inc. (ADI), a consulting company applying behavior science to organizational performance issues. He has consulted to numerous high-hazard industries and specializes in behavioral approaches to occupational safety, systems analysis, and safety leadership. Hyten earned his PhD in behavior analysis from West Virginia University, then worked as a faculty member at the University of North Texas for 20 years prior to joining ADI. He is a frequent speaker at conferences such as American Society of Safety Professionals (formerly ASSE) and Behavioral Safety Now. He has published articles in various journals such as Professional Safety and the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management. Employee occupational health professionals Hospital or nursing home administrators managers Jane E. DeVries, PhD, RN, is a psychologist, consultant, and executive coach. DeVries is a senior consultant at Aubrey Daniels International, Inc. She earned her PhD in applied behavior analysis from Western Michigan University. DeVries links behavior to bottom-line results through the practical application of behavioral science. She is an expert in solving performance problems across multiple arenas: healthcare, manufacturing, oil and gas, non-profits, railroads, education, justice systems, and others. Her experience includes leading her own coaching organization, as well as consulting from the boardroom to the frontline. While she has worked in multiple arenas, as a registered nurse she always appreciates the opportunity to work in healthcare settings.
5 Safe Patient Handling and Mobility The Madonna Story Wednesday, May 23, a.m. noon Eastern Patient movement-related injures plague many healthcare facilities. This presentation provides a framework for establishing safe patient handling and movement (mobility) programs using quality improvement methods including root cause analysis, project planning, and sustainability. Prior to the development of Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital s safe patient handling program, patient movement injuries to staff incurred the highest injury frequency and cost. Root cause analysis and identification of program components along with the sustainability phase resulted in a 97 percent reduction in the cost of injuries and a 77 percent reduction in the number of reported injures. Madonna received the 2014 Audrey Nelson Best Practice Award in safe patient handling. Our Presenters Sandy Stutzman, RN, BSN, starting as a staff nurse on Madonna Hospital s first rehabilitation unit, has more than 35 years of nursing experience. In her current role as employee health and safety manager, Stutzman is responsible for developing and directing a proactive, interdisciplinary approach for promoting and supporting employee health and safety including prevention of injury/illness, coordination of the recovery and rehabilitation of ill/injured employees to return to work, and consultation with employees regarding health issues or concerns. Stutzman co-authored Reducing Patient Movement-Related Injuries Through the Development, Implementation, and Sustainability of a Comprehensive Safe Patient Handling and Movement Program published in AM J SPHM March Directors of nursing Directors of therapy Safe patient movement/ handling committee Quality improvement Finance Occupational health staff staff Michelle Claycomb, PT, MSPT, CCS, is currently an inpatient physical therapist at Madonna Hospitals. Claycomb coauthored Reducing Patient Movement-Related Injuries Through the Development, Implementation, and Sustainability of a Comprehensive Safe Patient Handling and Movement Program and authored Guidelines to Safe Patient Transfers.
6 Understanding and Treating Pain From Work-related Causes Wednesday, October 17, a.m. noon Eastern Many extended workers compensation claims involve challenges with chronic pain. It is common for these injured workers to be prescribed opioid pain killers, which is concerning due to the number of Americans who become addicted. The CDC reports that 91 Americans die every day from opioid overdose and that since 1999, overdose deaths involving opioids has quadrupled*. Given these concerns, individuals who are responsible for managing workers compensation claims need to be alert to this hazard and take measures to intervene. Dr. Donald Teater s presentation will assist in identifying the importance of doing so and provide strategies to guide you. Objectives: 1. Identify the seriousness of the opioid addiction and overdose problem. 2. Describe the impact of opioids on the brain and how this contributes to opioid addiction and overdose. 3. List strategies that those responsible for workers compensation can implement to intervene. Our Presenter Donald Teater, MD, MPH, is a family physician who has lived and worked in western North Carolina for the past 29 years. Since 2004, he has focused on the intersection of pain, opioids, and addiction. He was the lead facilitator for the expert panel during the development of the CDC Guidelines for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain. He continues to work as a consultant with the CDC on educating prescribers on the appropriate treatment of pain. Employee/occupational health professionals Infection control professionals Human resource personnel managers or specialist Quality improvement team members Administrators While working nationally on the public health aspects of the opioid epidemic, he continues to see patients one day a week treating opioid use disorder and chronic pain. *Drug overdose deaths in the United States continue to increase in
