A Message from the Chairman and CEO Fiscal Year 12 was a year of tremendous growth for the American Red Cross of NH; growth in our service delivery, volunteer engagement and recruitment, community outreach and in our financial stability. The stories and work of the Red Cross of NH over the year is highlighted in this annual report; stories about the families we served after they lost their homes or were affected by a storm or flood and needed shelter and food; stories about military members and their families; stories about our transportation program providing critical rides to doctor appointments and treatments. Looking back over the year and the lives we touched, also makes us critically aware of the needs of those we will serve in the future and identifying the areas of priority to ensure we will be here for years to come. In preparing for the challenges ahead, the Red Cross of NH board of directors and leadership staff will be embarking on a strategic planning process that will help guide our priorities for the upcoming years. Priorities in this plan include: our face in the community; community resiliency; a broader focus on Service to the Armed Forces and International Services; skilled volunteer recruitment and youth engagement opportunities; fundraising growth and financial management. We look forward to learning from and working with you as our volunteers; our donors; our supporters and friends. Thank you for the privilege of serving NH every day. Maria White New Hampshire Region CEO Jeff Dudley Chairman
You Make It Possible The American Red Cross of New Hampshire provides vital services 365 days a year from responding to home fires in local neighborhoods to teaching first aid and CPR to community groups. We re able to provide these services thanks to a corps of 615 registered volunteers and the generosity of our donors. The American Red Cross puts these donations to good use we are proud to tell donors that we invest an average of 91 cents of every dollar in outreach diversity events and programs, well above the industry standard. How do we do it? By practicing what we preach: preparedness. We train our volunteers. We plan ahead for the types of disasters that strike in our community. And we train individuals, businesses and community groups so that they too can be prepared. The American Red Cross of New Hampshire serves a large portion of the state and has done so for 95 years. In this report, which covers fiscal year 2012 (July 1, 2011 June 30, 2012), you ll learn about how we help our neighbors down the street, across the country and around the world. Our work is made possible by our 615 volunteers 2
Down the Street House Fires to Hurricanes We re ready to respond to disaster 7 days a week, 365 days a year in our community, providing shelter, food, clothing and emotional support at no cost to those in need. The NH Region is part of a nationwide network of Red Cross regions that work together to respond to large-scale relief efforts. Home fires are the most common disaster to which the Red Cross responds. On average, the NH Region responds to a house fire every two and a half days. Although these fires don t typically make the news as hurricanes or other large-scale events do, they are devastating for those who have suddenly lost their homes, possessions and sense of security. In fiscal year 2012, the NH Region responded to 297 disaster events and assisted 717 clients affected by fires and other local disasters. The NH Region also teaches families, organizations and corporations how to be prepared for emergencies through free educational presentations. Last year 6,963 people attended community disaster education and preparedness programs in the NH Region. Preparing for the Unexpected Every year, the NH Region teaches people the lifesaving skills they need to protect themselves and their families, including First Aid, CPR and water safety. We offer these trainings in multiple ways: online training, traditional classroom settings and full-service courses where we bring the training to your workplace or organization. Last year, we: Prepared 6,963 individuals for disasters through our community disaster education initiatives. Free Red Cross preparedness programs teach individuals, families, businesses, and students the basic steps that should be taken to prepare for emergencies. Trained 22,043 people in CPR, first aid, water safety, use of automated external defibrillators, childcare, pet first aid, and care giving. Emergencies come in many shapes and sizes some man-made, others acts of nature. While it is impossible to control every outcome, education and planning can help you feel more confident that you and your loved ones will have the skills needed to cope. 3
Serving the Military, Their Families and Veterans The Red Cross of NH gives support to active-duty military members, National Guard and Reserve members, veterans and their families. We provide pre-deployment briefings, called Get to Know Us Before You Need Us, and connect families with needed resources when their loved ones are deployed. Deployed service members also count on us to deliver emergency messages, such as notification of an illness or death in the family. Military families rely on these verified communications, which help commanders decide when to grant leave. We also provide support for the sick and wounded at military and veterans hospitals and assistance in obtaining emergency financial support. During FY12, the NH Region: Briefed 225 families through the Get to Know Us Before You Need Us program Provided 275 services to military members, veterans and families, including emergency communications Packages from home Blood Making Sure It s Available We supported the efforts of the American Red Cross New England Blood Services, which processes, tests and safeguards blood collected from donors in communities around New Hampshire. During FY12, American Red Cross New England Blood Services held 1,348 blood drives such as the Officer Dan Doherty Blood Drive and the Gail Singer Blood Drive, which is the largest blood drive in the United States. American Red Cross New England Blood Services also distributed nearly 67,265 Units of lifesaving blood to areas in need.
Local Efforts, Global Reach Here in New Hampshire, we not only focus on International Services, but also Diversity and Resiliency Programs. Community Preparedness and Resilience Services (CPRS) is a new division led by Russ Paulsen under the direction of Richard Reed, Vice President for Preparedness and Resilience Strategy, in Humanitarian Services. CPRS is charged with supporting, coordinating and improving Red Cross community preparedness and resilience efforts in chapters nationwide. Our goal is to build community resilience by motivating people and organizations to take preparedness actions; and developing local community networks to address community-wide preparedness issues. Responding to Community Needs Safety School Initiative Program (SSI) sponsored by Oracle: Thanks to a very generous Grant from ORACLE Corporation the American Red Cross can teach free classes to school-aged students with our School Safety Initiative (SSI Program). Students learn how to prevent accidents before they happen, they also learn how to prepare for and respond to a variety of emergency situations. They will learn basic first aid skills, gain an understanding of how natural disasters occur, and learn how to deal with terrorism and tragic events. Red Cross New Hampshire Rural Rides Program In FY12, the Red Cross New Hampshire Rural Rides Program successfully transported 8,034 rides in Cheshire, Sullivan and Western Hillsborough Counties. The Keene and Manchester Veteran Rides are now combined and dispatched from Keene to provide better communication to clients and volunteer drivers. As part of a worldwide humanitarian network, the NH Region works to deliver international humanitarian aid in the wake of disasters; prevent disease and teach preparedness; reconnect families separated by armed conflict; and educate the public about International Humanitarian Law.
Across the Country Through a network of more than 500 chapters, 36 blood services regions and a presence on military installations across the country, the American Red Cross helps people when they need it most: when disaster strikes; when a hospital patient is in need of lifesaving blood; when a military family needs emergency assistance; and when people want to learn the skills needed to protect themselves and their family at a Glance Across the country, the American Red Cross: Responded to 61,058 disasters. Provided 424,504 services to military families. Collected 6 million units of blood. Taught 4,319,321 people lifesaving skills. A Steady Presence in the Storm Every year the Red Cross helps tens of thousands of people affected by disasters in the U.S. In addition to helping the survivors of thousands of home fires each year, the Red Cross is there for people affected by floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires and other events. One of those opportunities is the Cesar E. Chavez Blood Campaign, which engages U.S. Latino college students as campus organizers. The arrival of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee in late summer 2011 called for an enormous Red Cross response that would eventually cover more than a dozen states along the East Coast and into New England. The Red Cross mobilized nearly every emergency response vehicle east of the Rocky Mountains, moved tens of thousands of prepackaged meals into affected areas and deployed disaster workers. Multiple states were ravaged by wildfires in fiscal year 2011, including Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Montana and Utah. In each case the Red Cross provided shelter, meals and emotional support to residents as they waited for word on the fate of their homes. This in-kind donation will provide delicious snacks to generous blood donors. Working with partners is critical in large disaster relief operations such as these. During last year s tropical storms and wildfires, the Red Cross worked with volunteers from partner organizations such as AmeriCorps NCCC, the Southern Baptist Convention, Medical Reserve Corps and the Salvation Army to support sheltering and feeding efforts for thousands of affected residents. The Red Cross has made a concerted effort to strengthen its partnerships and improve its capacity to respond to disasters. One of the strongest ongoing partnerships at the Red Cross is with W.W. Grainger Inc., which helped develop the Ready When the Time Comes program. Now in its tenth year, the program has trained more than 13,000 employees from 460 businesses and organizations in 52 cities to be Red Cross disaster volunteers. Over the past two years, the number of trained volunteers has doubled and the program has been established in all critical disaster zones across the country. In the wake of Hurricane Irene, Red Cross volunteers unload cleanup supplies for distribution to the residents of Rodanthe. N.C. 6
Caring for Military Families and Veterans For more than 130 years, the Red Cross has provided critical services to service members, veterans and their families. As times have changed, the Red Cross has adapted to meet evolving needs providing training and workshops, handling emergency communications, and working at military installations and hospitals around the world. As service members return from deployment, many realize that coming home doesn t always go as smoothly as expected. To help ease this transition, the Red Cross offers Reconnection Workshops, presented by Walmart. This series of workshops, facilitated by licensed and specially trained Red Cross mental health volunteers, focuses on topics such as communicating clearly; exploring stress and trauma; identifying depression; relating to children; and working through anger. The Red Cross also provides services for patients in military and VA hospitals. With help from a grant from the U.S. Department of Defense, the Red Cross distributed more than 240,000 comfort items last year including calling cards, small games and snacks at hospitals and medical facilities for wounded service members, veterans and their families. The Red Cross supports the military and their families at home and around the world. Through a new partnership with the Wounded Warrior Project beginning in January 2012, the Red Cross distributed more than 1,200 transitional care packs to injured or ill service members in military hospitals in Afghanistan, Djibouti, Germany and Kuwait. In 2011, the Red Cross celebrated the fifth year of Holiday Mail for Heroes. Members of the public sent in 1.4 million cards for distribution to service members, their families and veterans around the world, bringing holiday cheer to those far from home. Red Cross Training Saves Lives The Red Cross continues to build on its reputation as a top provider of first aid, CPR/ AED, water safety and other training by updating courses, providing instruction in new areas and using the latest technology to help the public be prepared for emergencies. The Red Cross is leading the way in using the emerging power of digital technology to get information to people at the right place and time, launching its free First Aid app for iphone and Android devices in June The First Aid app gives people instant access to information on handling everyday emergencies, and was met with rave reviews. This app was the first in a series of apps to be released by the Red Cross. Training lifeguards and lifeguard managers is a key part of the Red Cross aquatics program. Last year, the Red Cross trained more than 250,000 lifeguards and lifeguard managers, protecting swimmers and bathers at pools, waterparks and waterfronts across the nation and on military installations overseas. The Red Cross first established water safety training nearly 100 years ago, and continually updates instruction based on new science, research and best practices. In January 2012, the Red Cross released an updated Lifeguard Program, which features modern graphics, video streaming and other digital options for the student guards. It also provides scenariobased training that emphasizes critical thinking and teamwork essential skills for every lifeguard. The new lifeguard certification is valid for two years. 7
Saving Lives Every Day Today the Red Cross provides approximately 40 percent of the nation s blood supply, and must collect around 17,000 donations each day to keep up with demand. Last year, 3.5 million people donated blood to the Red Cross, providing critical blood products to patients in need at nearly 3,000 hospitals. The Red Cross enjoys the support of young blood donors across the country, many of whom give blood at drives held at college and university campuses. Now, thanks to the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP), the Red Cross is able to reach an even greater number of young supporters. CAMP is an educational program that helps students from migrant and seasonal farm-working backgrounds succeed in college by helping them connect with scholarships, internships and service learning opportunities. One of those opportunities is the Cesar E. Chavez Blood Drive Challenge, which engages Latino college students in the U.S. as campus organizers. In 2011, CAMP held 91 blood drives with the American Red Cross, resulting in more than 5,900 donations. Another successful collaboration kicked off in August 2011, when Keebler and the Red Cross announced a partnership that will help spread the word about how good it is to give blood. Through the Be a Good Cookie; Get a Good Cookie. campaign, Keebler will donate 6 million cookies a year for a minimum of two years for Red Cross blood donor centers and blood drives. This in-kind donation will provide delicious snacks to generous blood donors. Young donors like this college student are vital to the blood donor community. 8
Around the World Global Reach, Global Impact Each year, disasters affect hundreds of millions of people worldwide, and conflict and health emergencies touch the lives of millions more. Last year the American Red Cross helped millions of people affected by flooding, tropical storms, droughts, earthquakes and other disasters in 27 countries. In addition, the American Red Cross also worked with Red Cross and Red Crescent partners around the world to build safer, more resilient communities that are better prepared for future disasters. When widespread drought in the Horn of Africa caused crop failure, water scarcity, low food supplies, death of livestock and the migration of people throughout the region, the American Red Cross contributed $4.2 million to the global Red Cross network s multicountry response, which provided water, food, health services and other relief supplies. Tropical storms and flooding also caused extensive damage around the world last year. The American Red Cross responded to humanitarian needs caused by floods in 14 countries, providing relief supplies, disaster specialists and financial support. The Red Cross also responded to Typhoon Washi in the Philippines by supporting the global Red Cross network s response, which assisted 25,000 people with food, clean drinking water and shelter supplies. Last year the American Red Cross helped communities in 33 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean better understand the disaster risks they face, develop action plans and identify cost-effective early warning systems to better predict and react to threats. The American Red Cross also brought measles vaccinations and health education messages to communities around the world. As a founding partner of the Measles Initiative, the American Red Cross has supported the vaccination of more than 1 billion children against measles over the last decade, including more than 146 million last year. Red Cross volunteers played a critical role in measles vaccination campaigns by going door-to-door, reaching even remote communities to encourage mothers to bring their children to be vaccinated. After Typhoon Washti damaged his home, Peter Lacarte received supplies from the Red Cross that helped him repair his house at a Glance 4.4 million people received disaster assistance from the American Red Cross in coordination with its global Red Cross network partners. Red Cross partners and communities in 33 countries were better prepared for future disasters. More than 146 million children were protected against measles. 4,709 families turned to the loved ones following wars and disasters. 9

Participation includes representation from all Emergency Support Functions (ESF) from across New Hampshire. Volunteer Engagement Whether serving our military and their families, responding to floods, home fires or supporting emergency responders on scene, volunteers are the face of hope to so many in their time of need. As educators, our volunteers teach young children to be safe at home, empower families to prepare and respond in the face of danger and help re-connect those who have been displaced as a result of tragedy. Youth Involvement Youth volunteers have been serving the Red Cross since World War I and continue to be catalysts of change, keeping the mission of the Red Cross alive and well. Our youth volunteers are actively engaged in the New Hampshire Community whether it is through Red Cross Clubs, visiting the veterans home in Tilton, NH or distributing holiday cards for the Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes Campaign. We value our next generation Red Crossers! Annual Meeting During our Annual Meeting, we had the opportunity to have Jenn Ackerman as our Keynote Speaker. Jenn, her husband and 4 children were affected by a home fire and American Red Cross New Hampshire responded and provided support. Jenn has since written several articles for the Concord Monitor about what it was like to be affected by disaster and the recovery after the fire.
