3 Executive Quality Academy Leadership for Whole System Improvement Is your leadership team ready for the new challenges that 2013 will bring? In the new era of accountable care, the demands to improve quality, reduce cost, and improve the patient experience confront senior health care leaders at every turn and in every setting. We ve updated the Executive Quality Academy (EQA) with new thinking and recent examples to help executives and their teams accelerate the rate of improvement and meet the challenges of today.
4 Updated components of the EQA course include: 1 A new IHI Leadership Model for Improvement based on the experiences of hundreds of health care organizations 2 Expansion of concepts and examples beyond the traditional hospital walls including learning from organizations pursuing the IHI Triple Aim 3 Leadership strategies to eliminate waste from support and clinical care processes critical to organizational sustainability in an era of declining revenue and reimbursement 4 A stronger focus on leadership and innovation What hasn t changed about the EQA is the precise focus on training leadership for improvement, expert faculty with hospital leadership experience, and the principal output of this intensive three-day program a detailed plan for each organization to achieve one or more how good, by when system-level quality aims. 5 Schedule MONDAY, APRIL 8 Day One Aims and Measures Each team will present its current quality aims and its plan for achieving those aims. By the end of the three days, teams will have a first-cut improved set of aims, along with relevant measures they can track on a monthly basis (or even more frequently), informed by feedback from the expert faculty and other participants. Get Patients and Families on Your Team, Engage the CFO, and Engage Physicians Teams will analyze presented case studies relative to senior team capabilities, understanding and using the business case, and approaches to physician engagement. TUESDAY, APRIL 9 Day Two Build Improvement Capability, Channel Attention The core of this section will focus on the personal work of senior leaders what they do with their time, how they know what to do with respect to technical improvement issues as well as leadership concerns such as scale and spread, flow management, waste reduction, and reliability. Critical technical skills that senior leaders must have will be identified and teams will create plans to develop, improve, and use those skills. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10 Day Three Theory of the Strategy Each team, including the CEO, will focus on developing a theory of the strategy for achieving its own quality aims using a variety of tools and methods.
6 Participating in the Executive Quality Academy (EQA) provided our leadership team with a focused deep dive into quality and safety. It was very hard work, but time very well spent. 7 Why Attend the Executive Quality Academy? Health care CEOs once could argue that their role was to get the finances, facilities, and capital investments right, and that it was the job of the doctors and nurses to deliver quality care. Not anymore. Leaders are responsible for all patient outcomes and are under pressure to produce both high quality and high value. In other words, clinical quality performance is no longer delegable to the quality people. Responsibility for measured performance in clinical quality and safety rests squarely on the shoulders of each member of the senior executive team, regardless of whether or not they have a clinical background. Who Should Attend This is an intensive learning and action planning session attended by up to five members of the senior executive team, including the CEO. We strongly encourage attendance by your CEO to fully maximize the value of the program. Teams who attend without their CEO find it more difficult to implement revised plans upon returning to their organization. We also encourage the attendance of one or more key board members, such as the incoming or current Board Chair, or the Chair of the Board s Quality Committee. Enroll now at ihi.org/eqa
8 How Does EQA Work? The principal output of this intensive three-day program will be a detailed plan for each organization to achieve one or more how good, by when system-level quality aims, integrated into the strategic plan of that organization. The framing of each plan will be around the following Seven Leadership Leverage Points for Organization-Level Improvement in Health Care: 1. Set specific system-level aims and oversee their achievement at the highest levels of governance 2. Build an executable strategy to achieve the aims, and oversee the execution at the highest levels of administration 3. Channel attention to system-level aims and measures 4. Get patients and families on your team 5. Engage the CFO in achieving the aims 6. Engage physicians in achieving the aims 7. 9 Faculty Michael D. Pugh, MPH Principal, Pugh Ettinger McCarthy Associates, has over 30 years of CEO experience in hospitals, health care systems, managed care organizations, consulting, and health care services companies. He is a nationally known advisor and consultant to health care provider organizations, payer organizations, and government agencies focusing on issues of quality, performance, strategy, and governance. Mr. Pugh has served on the boards of the American Hospital Association (AHA), the AHA Health Forum, the Colorado Hospital Association, and The Joint Commission. Stephen Swensen, MD, MMM, FACR Director for Quality, Mayo Clinic, is also Associate Dean for Value and Professor at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Under his leadership, the Quality Academy and the Value Creation System were established, training several thousand staff each year. Dr. Swensen currently serves on the boards for Luther Midelfort Medical Center-Mayo Clinic Health System and Stratis Health, and he is a member of the Mayo Clinic Management Team and the Clinical Practice Committee. Previously, he chaired the Mayo Department of Radiology. Donna C. Isgett, RN, MSN Senior Vice President of Corporate Quality and Safety, McLeod Health, is responsible for the corporate oversight of the Quality and Safety division, which includes Clinical, Operational and Service Effectiveness/Excellence, Epidemiology, Risk Management, Case Management, and Physician Credentialing. Ms. Isgett is also Co-Chair of the Quality Operations Committee at McLeod and a member of the McLeod Community Board of Trustees.
