Wish Book A Gift List for Yale-New Haven Children s Hospital

Thank You!

Dear Friends, For the last two years, your spectacular response to our Wish Book has helped make wishes come true. Hospital staff brought us their wish lists items to help patients and their families get through the tough experience of hospitalization a little more easily for us to share with you. For two years, you have made a tangible difference throughout the hospital by providing families with gift cards for food and parking, ipads for patients to stay in touch with friends and loved ones, high-tech rehabilitation equipment and hundreds of other items, large and small. This year s Wish Book is a little different. It focuses exclusively on the needs of our youngest patients those being treated at Yale-New Haven Children s Hospital. There is nothing harder on a parent than having a seriously ill child; there is nothing more frightening to a child than a hospital stay with all the attendant testing, treatment and separation from home and family. The following pages are filled with items that will comfort children and their families at a time when they are most challenged and vulnerable. Won t you help make these wishes come true? Peter N. Herbert, MD Chief of Staff Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs Cynthia N. Sparer Executive Director Yale-New Haven Children s Hospital

Providing comfort to children GIFTS TO Reduce Fear and anxiety Strange surroundings, unfamiliar faces, unaccustomed smells and sounds a trip to the hospital away from home, family members and pets is traumatic for anyone, but for children, it is especially frightening. The wishes in this section will do so much to ease stress and comfort children during a hospital stay. Toys for exam rooms These colorful wall structures and play panels provide safe, educational and diverting play activities for children during pediatric assessment exams. #201 $400, 26 needed Decorations for exam rooms Wall decals provide decoration and create a child-friendly environment in outpatient exam rooms. #202 $40, 26 needed Aromatherapy supplies Aromatherapy is used in combination with traditional medical therapies to decrease nausea, headache, stress, anxiety, increase appetite and aid in sleep. #203 $250 Child-friendly amenities for procedure rooms The sterile environment and unfamiliar equipment in a medical procedure room can seem scary and intimidating to children. The dolls do a wonderful job of reducing fear and promoting understanding in pediatric patients and their families. #208 $1,000, 3 needed

Providing comfort to families Gifts to improve quality of life for the families of hospitalized children Few experiences could be more difficult than having a child in the hospital. Uncertainty about the future, the pain of watching them go through uncomfortable procedures, the challenges of entertaining them and maintaining a sense of normalcy all these contribute to the fear and anxiety. The items in this section are designed to reduce stress and help family members cope.

Reiki training Reiki is a Japanese technique that uses gentle touch to promote relaxation, stress reduction and healing. It is offered to both family members and patients. #213 $100 to train one staff member Bereavement program The loss of a child is usually unanticipated and always devastating. Families often stay for hours, waiting for other family members to arrive and say goodbye to their child. This program provides resources for staff to help family members make handprints, footprints and clip hair for a memory box; create memory stones and jewelry; or make a legacy video to preserve the memory of their child. #214 $200 per family, 50 needed Massage for caregivers Massage is great therapy for caregivers during the challenging course of a child s stay in the hospital, allowing them to have a few moments dedicated to themselves to relax and recharge. #215 $20 per session, 200 needed Magazine subscriptions A selection of magazines helps caregivers and family members pass the time while waiting for a child s test results, consults or other treatment. #216 $25, 30 needed Bedside snacks and drinks for parents and caregivers Offered by hospital staff to caregivers who don t have the opportunity to eat or drink while staying at their sick child s bedside. #217 Healthy snacks including protein and granola bars, healthy drinks and bottled water, $600 per month, 12 months needed #218 Keurig coffee makers, $300, 8 needed #219 Keurig supply kits for making coffee, tea and hot chocolate, $50, 30 needed Find more Wish Book items at: ynhhwishbook.org

Helping those in need Necessities for those who can t afford them For those with limited financial resources, the stress of having a child in the hospital is often compounded by a host of unanticipated expenses hospital meals, transportation and parking costs and basic supplies for newborns, just to name a few. In many cases, a parent or caregiver must take time off from work, exacerbating the situation. The wishes that follow for things that so many of us take for granted will make an enormous difference to families going through difficult times. Infant/children s clothing The hospital relies on donated clothing, but we often don t have the appropriate sizes and attire for the children who need a change of clothing due to medical procedures or their illness. The smallest hospital gowns are often too big for some infants and children. #228 $15 per change of clothing, 100 needed Car seats No infant or toddler is allowed to leave the hospital without a car seat. Many families have difficulty affording one. #229 $100 each, 150 needed Car seat training model Buckling up the right way on every ride is the single most important thing a family can do to stay safe in the car, and it starts at the time the family leaves the hospital. This simulator car seat is used to instruct families on the correct way to install and secure a car seat. #230 $1,340 Heavy-duty double stroller Children dependent on respiratory equipment require a special stroller to hold all of their equipment. The YNHCH Respiratory Care Unit discharges about 10 patients a year in need of a specialty stroller, which is not covered by insurance. #231 $250, 10 needed Everyday expenses To help families in need manage some of the unplanned expenses they face when a child is in the hospital. #232 Gift cards to local restaurants, $25, 100 needed #233 Gas gift cards, $25, 100 needed #234 YNHH cafeteria gift cards, $20, 125 needed #235 Parking vouchers, $20, 125 needed #236 Pharmacy gift cards, $50, 100 needed

Toys & activities Gifts to help kids be kids in the hospital Being in the hospital often requires children to face experiences and decisions that would be difficult for most adults frightening prognoses, painful treatments and side effects, and feelings of sadness, isolation and regret at being separated from their friends and social activities. All the wishes in this section are vitally important they aim to bring our pediatric patients a few moments of the carefree joy of childhood. Lighted mobiles Lighted mobiles engage and distract infants and toddlers undergoing testing and procedures. #241 $50, 4 needed ipads This one small device allows kids to play games, watch TV shows or movies, listen to music, read books and visit face-to-face with family members and friends. Complete package includes laptop computer, software, digital camera, portable printer, photo paper and ink cartridges. #246 $2,500 Storytime book collection and teacher resources Our storytime program is eagerly anticipated each week by patients and their parents, who love the opportunity to listen, laugh, imagine, sing and do story-related crafts together.
