Mom s heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, height and weight will also be taken If a mom is not in labor or in early labor, she may be sent home and to return when contractions get more intense or if her water breaks If it is established mom is in labour, she will then be admitted to a Labour and Delivery room

OB Triage - Labour lounge Lounge is available for support people Only two support people are encouraged and can stay with mom in triage

Labour and Delivery Entrance Entry doors are locked for security reasons. Pick up the phone and press the call button. A staff member will answer and instruct you to come in. The door will then be unlocked and you have to push on the door to enter the unit It is policy that only two coach/support persons (ex. spouse, doula, family, etc) are on Labour and Delivery with mom Other support people or visitors are advised to stay on the main floor of the hospital

Nurses Station You will be met by a staff member at the nurses station which is in close proximity to all rooms Please request friends and family NOT call the unit seeking information All information is considered confidential, you are a provided a phone in each delivery room to make calls as you wish

Labour and Delivery Rooms There are four private labour and delivery rooms The telephone in each room is for outgoing calls only. 22 Infant Care An infant care centre is in each room beside the bed For normal deliveries when baby is vigorous, baby will be placed skin to skin with mom. This is encouraged for the first hour with minor interruptions for assessment by physician If baby is not vigorous at delivery, the baby will be moved to the infant care center for further assessment and care A heater allows the baby to be examined in a warm space and all care items and resuscitation equipment is readily available Baby will receive 2 leg bands that matches mom s wrist band prior to leaving the room. Both are left on for identification until discharge. If one or both fall off, staff should be notified immediately If breastfeeding, it is encouraged baby have a feed in the labour and delivery room

Birthing balls and birthing stools Birthing balls and birthing stools are available in each room to help with labour

Operating Room The OR is on the same unit as Labour and Delivery Planned c-section patients will be admitted on the maternity ward and taken by stretcher to the OR. Mom will visit the pre-admission clinic a head of time and be admitted in the morning of the surgery to be prepped (catheter, consent, pre-op medication) One support person can be in the operating room for a planned c-section. The support person will be given scrubs to change into, OR hat, booties, and mask. They will be directed to a waiting area and admitted to operating room suite once mom is ready After baby is born you will be moved to a recovery area where you will be monitored for 1 hour then be admitted to postpartum

Postpartum Room After delivery of your baby, you will be transferred by wheelchair with your baby to the maternity (postpartum) ward The majority of rooms are private. At times when there is a increased number of deliveries semi-private rooms are opened Very rarely a new mom and baby may have to share a room with another mom and baby, though every effort is made to avoid this For a uncomplicated vaginal delivery, mom and baby stays for 1-2days and 2-3days for uncomplicated c-section delivery

Postpartum room TV and phone can be hooked up for a fee Newborn photo services are available Welcome Wagon Representative visits the maternity ward to offer a package 1 Lactation Consultant is available Monday thru Thursday, 8am-4pm with the exception of her being on holidays or sick Mother sleeping signs are available for your door to help mothers get some rest Each room has a bathroom with shower Cots are available for one support person to stay with mom and baby

Postpartum Baby stays with mom 24hours a day and sleeps in a open bassinet (as pictured here) If walking with baby, push in bassinet; for safety reasons DO NOT carry baby in arms Babies may be taken to the assessment room for a weight check or for bloodwork For safety, do not leave baby unattended in the room. Babies are not allowed to leave the floor until discharge Parents should always ask to see photo identification of hospital staff who ask to take baby from the room Parents have the right to remain with their baby at all times if they wish

Phones Payphones are located throughout the hospital Cell phones may be used: o Outside the hospital o In the main floor lobby area o In patient rooms if it is not disruptive to others

Family Lounge A large family lounge is available to use. Rocking chairs, a TV, and vending machines are for use in the room General visiting hours are 2 p.m. - 8 p.m. daily

Postpartum-Nurses Station The Nurses Station is next to the public elevators Nurses will offer breastfeeding support, baby care, and self care education. A baby bath demo will be done before discharge For discharge home, you will need an approved care seat and going home outfit for baby. The car seats need to be brought to the hospital on the day of discharge. Nurses will help check that baby is in the car seat properly

Car Seats According to Alberta law, infants must travel in an approved rear-facing car seat. Purchase this seat before your baby is born, and read both the manufacturers instructions and your vehicle owners manual for correct installation. For more information go to
