It includes introduction to medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, vital signs measurement, math used for conversions, and universal precautions/bloodborne pathogen training. CHSE 108 Long- Term Care Nurse Aide Reading Level 5 or (Reading and ENGL 099 concurrently) and Writing Level 4 Lecture 44 hrs, Lab 48 hrs, Worksite 36 hrs. Fa,Sp,Su $522* This course will prepare an individual to be a nurse aide in a long-term care facility or home health care agency. This state-approved course will provide specific knowledge and skills required for a nurse aide to safely function in a long-term care setting. Upon successful completion, the student is eligible to take the Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Exam. CHSE 151 Patient Care Technician PCT/NA (Minimum 2.5 in CHSE 108 within one year or current CNA Certification and Program Approval) and ((Reading Level 5 or (Reading and ENGL 099 concurrently)) and Writing Lecture 54 hrs, Lab 64 hrs, Worksite 30 hrs. Fa,Sp $702* Co-Requisite Course(s): NCHE 102 This course prepares the Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) to be a Patient Care Technician (PCT) in a hospital or other acute care setting, adding to a student s previous training in a long-term care setting. Specific knowledge, skills, and training required to deliver safe basic patient care are covered (i.e., personal needs, phlebotomy, EKG). Successful completion of this course provides eligibility to take the National Certified Patient Care Technician (NCPCT) exam. CHSE 114 Pathophysiology- Allied Health Minimum 2.5 in BIOL 145 or (BIOL 201 and BIOL 202) and Online only Fa,Sp $99 General principles of pathology are discussed in order to develop a new way of thinking about disease processes. Concepts of specific disease processes and their effect on normal structure and function of the body are presented. Disease prevention concepts are also discussed.
2 Community Health Services Education Page 2 CHSE 117 Health Law and Ethics 1 Evening/week; or Online Fa,Sp,Su $99 This course presents for discussion, legal and ethical issues arising from the organization and delivery of health care services. Topics include contracts, torts, business law; medical recordkeeping and retention; physicians' public duties; licensure, certification and regulation of health professionals; consent for treatment; and exploration of issues arising from various bioethical topics. CHSE 120 Medical Terminology 1 or 2 Days/week or 1 Afternoon/ or Evening/week, or Online Fa,Sp,Su $144 Medical Terminology will provide an in-depth knowledge of word building, use, pronunciations, spelling of medical terms, applying terms to the function and structure of body systems and specific disease conditions. Emphasis is placed on medical terms in periodicals, textbooks, and medical care areas. This is a health careers foundational course. The course is used as a prerequisite for several health career programs and/or courses, including and Coding (CHSE 123), EKG Tech (CHSE136) and Sterile Processing (CHSE 145 and 148). A 2.5 grade MUST be obtained to use this course as a prerequisite. CHSE 123 /Coding I Minimum 2.5 in CHSE 120 or concurrently. Strongly Recommended: Computer, keyboarding, and internet skills and experience 1 Evening/week (classroom) for 16 weeks Fa-cohort $99* MIBC is offered as a Cohort (see attached schedule on back page of guide) This course introduces insurance billing and diagnostic and procedure coding using the ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS. Legal and compliance issues and responsibilities and their relationship to insurances are discussed. Computerized insurance billing information is provided. CHSE 124 /Coding II Minimum of 2.5 in CHSE 123 Spring 1 st 8 wks Sp $99* This course provides comprehensive billing directions for BCBS of Michigan, Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurances including HMOs, managed care, and worker's compensation. May be taken concurrently with CHSE 125, 131
3 Community Health Services Education Page 3 CHSE 125 Computers I- /Coding Minimum of 2.5 in CHSE 123 Strongly Recommended: Keyboarding experience Spring 1 st 8 wks Sp $119 This course in combination with CHSE 124 introduces students to software used in medical office billing and coding. Students learn to record charges/payments/information, schedule appointments, ICD-10 and CPT coding, produce claim forms and patient statements, and build office databases. CHSE 127 /Coding III Minimum 2.5 in CHSE 124 and Reading Level 5 and Writing Spring 2 nd 8wks Sp $131 The focus of this course is coding and billing for inpatient and outpatient hospital-based services. Students will be introduced to the ICD-10 diagnostic and procedure codes. DRGs and their impact are discussed, as are recording charges using the UB-04 and CMS 1500 claim forms. Students will post payments, review and resubmit claims, and perform account receivable follow-up and collections. (Sp) Prerequisite: Minimum 2.5 in CHSE 124 or concurrently and CHSE 130 /Coding Externship Minimum 2.5 in CHSE 123 and CHSE 124 and CHSE 125, CHSE 127 and Reading Level 5 and Writing 16 week course with four 4-hr lectures and 20 hrs/wk at the worksites Fa,Sp,Su $109 This course provides students with worksite experience and training that is both physician office and hospital based. This experience will re-enforce the skills learned in CHSE 123, 124, and 125, 127, 131 and prepare students for an entry-level position in the medical billing and coding field. Students are required to attend lectures, which will include discussion of professional work-place skills. Students must pass an ICHAT criminal background check prior to the beginning of class. CHSE 131 Electronic Health Records Intro and (minimum 2.5 in CHSE 120 or concurrently) 2 nd 8 wks Fa Sp-cohort $119 This course introduces students to the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and its impact on health career-related job responsibilities. Through hands-on experience, students gain an awareness of how EHRs are used in different healthcare settings and how they change the nature of the work performed by individuals throughout the health care field. This course can also be taken by non-medical billing and coding students who meet the pre-requisites. May be taken concurrently with CHSE 120, 123, 124, 125 and 127.
4 Community Health Services Education Page 4 CHSE 136 EKG Technician Minimum 2.5 in CHSE 120 or concurrently, and Reading Level 5 1 Evening/week for 16 wks Fa,Sp $129 This course teaches the theory and skills to perform process and explain electrocardiography and Holter monitoring. Anatomy, physiology, pathology, and basic cardiac rhythm recognition is presented. Hands-on instruction and practice are included. Successful students may become certified through the American Certification Agency for Healthcare Professionals and/or the Cardiovascular Credentialing Institute. A beneficial course for all healthcare students and professionals. CHSE 143 Phlebotomy Technician Reading Level 5 or (Reading and ENGL 099 concurrently) and Writing Level 4 1 Afternoon/week or 1 Evening/week for 16 weeks (8 weeks in summer) Fa,Sp,Su $167* This course is designed to prepare a person to function as a phlebotomy technician. It will provide the knowledge and skill necessary to safely and skillfully ensure patient identification, obtain a blood sample from a patient, and properly handle specimens after collection. The course includes lecture and campus laboratory. This course is the first course of a 2-course sequence (CHSE 143 & 144). CHSE 144 Phlebotomy Externship Minimum 2.5 in CHSE 143 within 1 year and Reading Level 5 and Writing 12 classroom hours over 3 days in one week, and 18 hours/week in a hospital or outpatient drawing center for 7 weeks (125 total hours) Fa,Sp,Su $160* This course is designed to enable the student to apply procedures learned in CHSE 143, Phlebotomy Technician, to a clinical laboratory setting. While at the worksite (clinical laboratory), students will be under the supervision of a preceptor. The course includes lecture, a practical review of techniques, and worksite experience. This course is the second course of a 2-course sequence (CHSE 143 & 144). Successful completion of the Program qualifies the student to take the ASCP National Certification Exam. CHSE 145 Sterile Processing Tech I Minimum 2.5 in CHSE 120 or concurrently, and Reading Level 5 and Writing Classroom 1 Evening/week and worksite 1 Day/week 4hrs/day for 12 weeks Fa,Sp $402 This course introduces individuals to basic skills needed in the Sterile Processing Department of health care facilities. Duties include processing of patient care equipment, supplies, and instruments for use in all departments. It also includes principles and practices of decontamination, cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and distribution of medical/surgical supplies. Clinical component is included. This course is part of a 3-course sequence (CHSE 120, 145, 148). Students may be required to stand for extended periods of time while performing job duties.
5 Community Health Services Education Page 5 CHSE 148 Sterile Processing Externship Minimum 2.5 in CHSE 120 and CHSE 145, and Reading Level 5 and Writing Classroom 16 hrs Clinical 128 hrs (144 total hours) Fa,Sp $129* This course prepares individuals to function competently in the Sterile Processing Department in healthcare facilities. It builds on the principles and practices taught in CHSE 145 and includes practice in an externship. Successful completion of the course qualifies a student to take the National Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CSPD) exam. This course is part of a 3-course sequence (CHSE 120, 145, 148). Students may be required to stand for extended periods of time while performing job duties. CHSE 235 Pharmacy Technician Reading Level 5, Writing and Math 1 Evening/week Fa,Sp $144 This course is designed to introduce students to the skills necessary for a pharmacy technician position in a hospital or retail pharmacy. Students will be prepared to function with knowledge and accuracy in dispensing and control of drugs in either setting. Successful completion prepares students to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam. The Pharmacy Technician works under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist. Students who successfully complete this course may take CHSE 236, Pharmacy Technician Externship, to gain practical experience. This course is the first course of a 2-course sequence (CHSE 235 & 236) CHSE 236 Pharmacy Technician Externship Minimum 2.5 in CHSE 235 within 1 year 8 week course with four 4-hour lectures and 16 hours/ week at the worksite for 8 weeks (128 total hours) Fa,Sp/Su $99 This externship experience introduces the student to the skills necessary to perform the function of a pharmacy technician relative to prescription review, an introduction to prescription software, label preparation, and product selection during a hands-on activity in a live pharmacy environment. Students will be under preceptor supervision while at a hospital or community pharmacy. Students must pass an ICHAT criminal background check prior to the beginning of class. This course is the second course of a 2-course sequence (CHSE 235 & 236) In addition to regular class time, students are required to complete Bloodborne Pathogens & HIPAA Training online. Information will be distributed at the first class session. A negative 2-step TB (tuberculosis) skin test or chest x-ray within the last year is required. After successful completion of this course (2.5 or higher), the student may apply to the Registrar s Office for a Certificate of Completion. After successful completion of CHSE 120, 123, 124, 125, 127, 130, & 131 (all with 2.5 or higher), the student may apply with the Registrar s Office for a Certificate of Completion. After successful completion of CHSE 108 and CHSE 109 (2.5 or higher), the student may apply to the Registrar s Office for a Certificate of Completion for CHSE 110.
