1 Phlebotomy Program APPLICATION INFORMATION The Phlebotomy Program at Northeast Texas Community College is a course series designed to prepare students to take the national certification test with the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT). Phlebotomists typically work in hospitals, commercial laboratories, physician's offices, blood banks, pharmaceutical firms, home health agencies, research institutions, hospices, public health clinics, prisons, and visit patient's homes. They wear medical scrubs and gloves to perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain a blood sample for laboratory testing. Many phlebotomists also perform clerical, computer data entry, and specimen processing functions. Proper phone etiquette and client service abilities is part of the daily routine, as well as independently receiving scheduled patients to take care of their specimen collection needs. They deal with doctors and nurses, laboratory technicians, and support workers in various locations. In their daily routine, they encounter both healthy and sick people, from infants to the elderly. Phlebotomist's Duties... The nature of their work brings a high potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens through splatter and needle stick injuries. Experienced phlebotomists might function as so-called mobile phlebotomists driving to patient locations to perform blood draws, complete paperwork, and transport specimens for testing from there. In some cases it may be the phlebotomist who performs certain manual tests or operates automated analyzers to process the blood. Responsibilities To be proficient, phlebotomists must know human anatomy, master technical and communication skills with people of all ages, know laboratory safety rules, and adhere to all CDC recommendations and OSHA requirements. They obtain blood and other specimens as ordered by a licensed health care provider, label the specimen collection tubes with patient's name and DOB, time of collection, collection source, etc., file lab slips and incidence reports, preserve and refrigerate specimens, distribute specimens to correct racks or location, answer phones and direct calls to appropriate clinical personnel and lab technicians, retrieve specimens from drop-off bins and couriers, properly dispose of contaminated sharps, and participate in venipuncture training of phlebotomy students and other medical personnel. Salary, Skills, and Safety The hourly pay for phlebotomists is (roughly) somewhere between $ $12.25 per hour. The Occupational Outlook Handbook reports that earnings vary widely and pay levels are governed chiefly by experience and qualifications. Once established, skilled phlebotomy professionals will work their way up within their organization, or explore job offers and options that will let them earn impressive wages. Skills that were taught in the classroom are refined on the job. As the number of blood draws increases, the better the technique and skills. In addition to taking continuing education courses through web sites or professional magazines phlebotomists can attend conferences and courses to keep their knowledge up to date and maintain their credentials. Phlebotomists must understand that due to their occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials they may be at risk of acquiring hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and other illnesses. The law mandates that employers must give phlebotomists the opportunity to be vaccinated with hepatitis B vaccine, at no charge to them. OSHA Standard Blood borne Pathogens Regulatory Text. OSHA has concluded that the best practice for prevention of needle stick injuries following phlebotomy procedures is the use of appropriate safety devices, safe equipment and the use of a sharps disposal container with engineered sharps injury protection attached to the blood tube holder.

2 Acceptance to the Phlebotomy Program at NTCC is based on the following criteria: 1. Applicants must be 18 years of age and have a High School Diploma or GED certificate. A copy of the document must be included. 2. Applicants must submit proof of CPR for Health Care Providers course completion. The Office of Professional Education and Allied Health offers CPR for Health Care Providers each month except December. The cost of the course is $50. Course dates are: 9/24/11; 10/15/11; 11/15/11 3. Applicants must submit proof from a licensed Health Care Provider of Hepatitis B injections. ** Admittance is allowed if student will complete the 2 nd Hepatitis B injection by the first class day. Completion of the series of 3 injections is recommended; however, if you are pregnant or have a medical condition, seek the advice of your health care provider before beginning the Hepatitis B vaccine. 4. Applicants must submit immunization records to determine if booster shots are necessary. If boosters are necessary, proof will be required of the injections given before registration will be permitted. If you are pregnant or have a medical condition, seek the advice of your health care provider before receiving any booster shots. 5. Applicants are also required to submit a current TB test result. If a TB test shows positive, students will be required to have a chest X-Ray as proof that they do not have active Tuberculosis. Results are good for one year. If you are pregnant or have a medical condition, seek the advice of your health care provider before receiving a TB test. 6. Applicants must have physical form completed by students Health Care Provider. 7. Applicants must take the TABE test and submit the scores with application. The TABE is the Test for Adult Basic Education. TABE is a diagnostic test used to determine a person s skill levels and aptitudes. The TABE test is available free of charge in the Academic Skills Center (ASC) at NTCC. It is the responsibility of the students to contact the ASC to set up a time to test. The ASC will also have the students write a brief paragraph stating their reasons for wanting to become a phlebotomist. If the applicant has previous college course work, students may submit THEA Test scores or equivalent examination scores such as Quick THEA, COMPASS, or Accuplacer. Please note: If you are THEA exempt or waived based on TSI requirements, you must still take the TABE test and submit scores with your application. This is the entrance test for the Phlebotomy Program, so scores are required regardless of TSI status. 8. Applicants must complete and submit the Applicant Form, Applicant Questionnaire, Application Checklist, and the Statement of Understanding, and physical form completed by students Health Care Provider. All forms are included in this packet. 9. Sixteen applicants will be selected for the class, along with two alternates. Alternates will be allowed into the program if the selected applicants choose not to participate or become ineligible to participate. Applicants are evaluated on an admission rating scale and will be notified by mail thirty days after application deadline. 10. Applicants selected will undergo a random drug screen prior to beginning clinical rotations. Failure to take or pass this drug test will result in students being unable to attend clinical and meet the requirements for the course work. Failure to comply with any of these requirements will result in failure of the program. 11. Completed applications, application checklist information, and all other documents must be returned in the application packet folder to the following address by 10/28/11. There are often more applicants than available positions in the Phlebotomy Program and not all students who apply may be accepted.
