10 SRGT 2462 CLINICAL REQUIREMENTS See weekly clinical schedule. I. Clinical Rotation The course meets in a clinical setting (3) days a week from 6:30am 4:00pm. Students must demonstrate dependability, responsibility and promptness, when attending clinical sites. The student is to call their designated instructor upon arrival at the clinical site, and no later than 6:30 am. Students must also call their assigned clinical site prior to 6:30 am when absent or tardy (See Clinical Attendance Policy). In addition, student must also call the clinical instructor to notify of absence or tardiness and make arrangements for days missed. Students must obtain the standard level of 120 scrubbed cases under the standards of the 6 th Edition Core Curriculum in order to graduate. II. Weekly Critical Thinking Clinical Reports All reports must be submitted via Moodle by 8:00 a.m. Monday morning. No late reports will be accepted. The Clinical Report is a case study of a surgical procedure in which the student has participated during their clinical experience. The report will describe the operating room techniques according to the surgeon s preference and how these techniques were applied or used during the phases of the surgical procedure. No repeat reports will be accepted. III. Weekly Performance Forms Students must attend clinical rotations from 6:30 am 4:00 pm each clinical day in order to receive credit for the performance evaluation. The student must submit weekly performance evaluation forms (x3) on Monday morning of the following week. The forms are due prior to the commencement of Theory class. They must be filled out completely in order to be a valid form. Late or incomplete forms will receive a grade of 0. Difficulties to acquire preceptor participation are to be documented on the preceptor form and must be submitted to the clinical instructor. The clinical instructor will communicate with the preceptor to discuss the details of the incident and will resolve the situation accordingly. IV. Preceptor Evaluations Two preceptor evaluation forms are to be submitted for every 3 week rotation. It is the students responsibility to have the appointed preceptor complete and fax the evaluation form to the clinical instructor. All forms must be filled out inclusive with the preceptors signature in order to receive credit. This includes your name, the course number, date, preceptor s name, and hospital; forms that are missing the listed information will receive a grade of 0. 10

13 ASSOCIATION OF SURGICAL TECHNOLOGISTS (AST) CORE CURRICULUM FOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY 6TH EDITION CLINICAL CASE REQUIREMENTS 1. The total number of cases the student must complete is Students are required to complete 30 cases in General Surgery. Twenty of the cases must be in the First Scrub Role. 3. Students are required to complete 90 cases in various surgical specialties. Sixty of the cases must be in the First Scrub Role and evenly distributed between a minimum of 5 surgical specialties. However, 15 is the maximum number of cases that can be counted in any one surgical specialty. 4. Diagnostic endoscopy cases and vaginal delivery cases are not mandatory. But up to 10 diagnostic endoscopic cases and 5 vaginal delivery cases can be counted towards the maximum number of Second Scrub Role cases. 5. Observation cases must be documented, but do not count towards the 120 required cases. 6. Counting Cases Cases will be counted according to surgical specialty. Examples: Trauma patient requires a splenectomy and repair of a LeFort I fracture. Two cases can be counted and documented since the splenectomy is general surgery specialty and the repair of LeFort I is oral-maxillofacial surgical specialty. Patient required a breast biopsy followed by mastectomy. It is one pathology, breast cancer, and the specialty is general surgery; therefore, it is counted and documented as one procedure one case. 13
