1 GRADUATE STUDIES NEWS A publication for MA, MBA, and MSN students at Alverno College October 17-18, 2008 Brown Bag Lunch Advising Sessions will be held this weekend, October 18, from 12:00-1:00: MA LA 320 MBA AF 105 MSN Alumnae Hall News about graduate students, graduates and faculty Current Students MPD student Carol Reiners and MRD student Michelle Mullen, along with faculty member Rita Nawrocki-Chabin, represented Alverno at the SHARP Literacy luncheon on October 7. Alums Linda Bay, MSN 07 received a request to use her Sepsis tutorial developed in MSN 621: Advanced Physiology and Pathophysiology from a Director of Nursing Education at Haywood Regional Medical Center in Western North Carolina. The Education Director found Ms. Bay s tutorial on the web and requested to upload it to the Medical Center s educational software (Net Learning). Nurses will then be required to complete the tutorial as part of their in service programming Susan Butcher, MA 04 was interviewed for a radio program that aired on October 8. On"Prime Time America," from Moody Bible Institute, Susan was interviewed on what she does with the drama productions and using the "arts" at her work for the Wisconsin Corrections Department. Leah Gilliam, MA 01 and 03, has a new position as assistant principal at W.E.B. DuBois, which one of the small high schools located in Marshall High in Milwaukee. Sr. Katy LaFond, MA 07 and Graduate Dean Mary Diez gave a presentation for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee s Catholic Teachers Convention on October 10. Their focus was Using Descriptive Feedback to Support Learners. Graduate Program Faculty/Staff Linda Londo, MS, RN, has been hired to be the new Clinical and Preceptor Recruiter and Placement Coordinator for the School of Nursing. In this position, Ms. Londo will secure all preceptors for master s students. Prior to this, Dr. Cathy Knuteson held this
2 position. Ms. Londo will be introduced at Saturday s MSN Brown Bag. She will share with you processes and dates needed to secure preceptors for the spring 2009 semester. Please welcome Ms. Londo to our MSN Program team! Graduate Dean Mary Diez, along with William Henk and Martine Scanlon, colleagues from Marquette University, had a reflection included in a recent publication from The Alliance for Catholic Education Press at Notre Dame. It appeared in The Carnegie Conversation on Catholic Education, edited by John Staud. The title of the reflection was Models for Catholic School Renewal. News to share? If you have a new position, have made a presentation, have received an honor, or have other news to share, please send the details to your program director: For the MA--mary.diez@alverno.edu; for the MBA William.mceachern@alverno.edu; and for the MSN Julie.Millenbruch@alverno.edu. Registration Information Registration weekend is October 31-November 1. You can access your registration materials through IOL Interactive On-Line. You also can find your program evaluation, listing what you have completed and what you have left to take, on IOL. If you need to meet with an advisor prior to registration weekend, please make an appointment or confer with him/her by . MBA continuing students: MBA Director Bill McEachern will visit the MGT 600 class in TL109G on Saturday, November 1 to assist MBA students with their registration for 2008SP. This will be scheduled at the end of the morning session and should not take more than 15 minutes of class or lunch hour time. MA and MSN students: If you are not familiar with IOL or with registration on line, we will be offering one session during registration weekend where you can go to a computer classroom for assistance with navigating the registration process. Mary Diez will also be available for part of the session for advising assistance for MA students. You ll receive an easy/at a glance handout that describes all of the services/information/functions that are now only accessible online. This session will be held in the Computer Center, Room TL 110 on Saturday, November 1, from 12:00 1:00 p.m. Note that Mary Diez will meet with TLA 611 students during the last part of their class; so she will be available in TL 110 by shortly after 12:00 noon. MA students who are returning from Student-on-Leave status or are on academic probation have a #25 hold on their registrations and must meet with an advisor before they can register. Even if you aren t required to do so, it s a good idea to check your plan for your program with an advisor. Make an appointment or send an soon. While you are checking information for registration, be sure to check your graduation date and update it if necessary. If your graduation date is incorrect, you may not receive
3 information about graduate in the semester your plan to graduate! Here are three announcements from the Advising Office: 1. Students need to check their for their priority registration date and time ( will come from WEBREG very soon). Before that date students need to go to IOL (Interactive On-Line) to print their registration materials and directions and see their Advisor during the Advising Period (begins October 17 th until Registration Period). The Registration Period for Graduate students: Friday, October 31 - Sunday, November 2, MA and MSN students, please refer to your academic evaluation to see if you are eligible for an external assessment. If so, you should register for it. If you need assistance determining this, you should contact your advisor. REMINDER: a tentative Summer School schedule is available on the Registrar s Office page at 2. Students need to check if they have any holds on their record. Hold information can be located on IOL Student Information page. Some holds will prevent students from registering. If students need assistance they may contact the Academic Advising Office or the Registrar s Office. 3. The Official Start date of the Spring 2009 semester is Friday, January 16, Mark your calendar. Payment arrangements must be made in the Business Office by this date or a late payment fee will be charged. If you have questions stop in the Business Office, LA 225 or call Talking About Entrepreneurism MBA students who can free up an hour during their workday are invited to join faculty and students in Kellogg A on Wednesday, October 29, 11 a.m. - Noon, to hear Roy Reiman. Mr. Reiman is the retired founder and chief executive of Reiman Publications. He started his business in his basement in 1963 and by the time of his retirement was printing 12 advertisement-free magazines. He will share his business experiences and wisdom as well as answer questions from students. 4 Scholarship Opportunities for MSN students Reminder: The CNS Foundation Scholarship Deadline is December 1, 2008: The Clinical Nurse Specialist Foundation provides scholarships for CNS students in Masters and PhD programs. Scholarship information and applications are available on the CNS Foundation page on the NACNS website. Scholarship applications are due December 1, Scholarly Opportunities for MSN students The 2009 Annual National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists conference will be held in St Louis, MO from March 12-14, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency. The NACNS Board released the following announcement: 2009 Call for Student Poster Abstracts: Deadline Dec. 1, 2008 Student poster abstracts will be accepted until Dec. 1, Instructions for submitting abstracts and the electronic submission form can be accessed on the conference page of our website. Please consider submitting an abstract to present at this important conference. The School of Nursing Research Review Committee (SON-RRC) reviews and approves master s nursing students Institutional Review Board protocols for the Practicebased Inquiry Project (PBIP). This semester, the SON-RRC will hold meetings on November 11 th and December 9 th to facilitate review and approval of students protocols. If you do not have a resume or would like help refining your resume, please call the Career Education Center at (414) to schedule an appointment. 1. New User Registration: If you are not a current user, you must register. Click on the Click here to Register! link. Complete all sections and click on the Register button. Required fields are marked with an asterisk (*). Click on the Submit Profile button NOTE: Once you have submitted your profile, your account will be in pending status. An administrator will review your profile. If your registration is approved, you will receive an notification. If you do not receive your notification within 48 hours, please contact the office with which you are working: Career Education Center (414) Internship Office (414) Existing Users: Log into system using your Username and Password. Update your profile: Put your cursor over My Account and select My Profile. You will see sections containing Personal Information, Demographic Information, Skills, and Additional Information. Each section will have an [Edit] link. Click on this link to edit fields within the section. Carefully go through each section and complete all of the fields making sure to NOTE: The more detail you put into your profile, the better we will be able to assist you with your career and internship planning. click on the Save button. Required fields are marked with an asterisk (*). Upload your documents: Put your cursor over My Account and select My Documents. Click on the [Upload File] link. Click the Browse button to find your document.
7 Select the correct document and name it. Click the Upload button. NOTE: When uploading more than one document, make sure your default resume is your default. Your default resume is the document that employers can view when accessing our system. Searching for Jobs and Internships: Put your cursor over Jobs and select Job Search. Fill in the search criteria to narrow down your job search OR just click the Search button (without entering any search criteria) to view all current jobs. Click on the Job ID to see the specifics of the position and how to apply. You can save your search and choose to be ed about new jobs by clicking on Save Search. Searching for Career Events: NOTE: If your account is pending, then the option below is not available to you. You will be ed once your account is activated. Click on the Career/Internship Events menu. You will see a list of all current Career/Internship Events (Career Fairs, Internship Workshops, etc.). To view details, employers registered and/or RSVP, click on the Career Event s name. NOTE: Not all events accept RSVPs or allow students to search the list of employers registered for the event. Viewing Your Activity Put your cursor over My Account and select My Activity. There are 3 types of activity that you can view: Referrals These are resume referrals that you ve submitted to an employer s job, our office has submitted on your behalf, or an employer has downloaded your resume. Placements These are current job placements and details of those. RSVPs These are the Career Events that you are currently RSVPd for.
