6 Flow of a patient 1) Patient visits physician. 2) Physicians order tests to aid in diagnosing patient. 3) Phlebotomist / Registered Nurse collects blood an urine. 4) Lab Assistant prepares specimens for testing. 5) Lab Technicians prepare instruments and run simple test. 6) Lab Scientist / Technologist perform advanced test. 7) Test results sent back to Physicians 8) Patient is diagnosed and treated.

8 Training Program/Certification Certified Laboratory Assistant (CLA) Prepare specimens for testing May perform phlebotomy (License) Could also be called upon for administrative tasks Pay approximately per hour

9 Associate Degree/Certification Exam Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Associates degree and license. Performs low to medium testing. Run tests on high-tech equipment. Performs maintenance on all machines Pay approximately per hour

10 BS/Training/Certification Exam Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) 4 Year college and license. Perform all test low to high advanced testing. A vital part of the emergency medical team Help provide treatment information directly to the doctor Pay approximately per hour

22 #4 Patient Care You make a difference. Quality work the laboratory does greatly affects patient care. Always remember that each specimen is a patient.

23 Group Activity Help Doctor Luffy treat the patient. A 22 yr. old woman was brought into the ER after a major car accident. She has lost a lot of blood due to trauma to head and legs. And suffered broken bones. -Doctor order a urinalysis, pregnancy test, and blood for transfusion and X-ray. While she recovers in the hospital the doctor notices a persistent cough. She tells the physician she has a sore throat. -Doctors orders rapid strep A test.

27 Answers Urinalysis is NORMAL - Surgery can be done - Checks for infections and drugs in the body Pregnancy is NEGATIVE - X-rays can be done on broken bones - No possible birth defect and miscarriage

28 Answers Strep A test is POSITIVE - Patient has strep throat. - Antibiotics are issued to the patient. Donor type is O pos - Blood can be given to women who lost blood.

29 Answers The results you just got help the patient get better. So doctors, nurses and pharmacist are able to use the data you gave to diagnose and treat the patient. Every profession in the hospital care is an integral part to treating and saving lives.
