1 Jefferson State s Career Pathways provides a comprehensive, integrated and coordinated approach to connecting individuals with careers through the delivery of specific skills and experiences. The Career Pathways will facilitate access to services provided by core partners as well as provide direct services related to adult education. Identify the career pathways your program has selected to implement. Give the factors and data that support your decision. EMT Basic Career Technical Education Emergency Medical Technicians are licensed medical professionals who provide emergency medical care to the sick and injured in an effort to promote health, alleviate suffering and conserve human life. The EMT Basic is a one semester course consisting of two classes, EMS118 and EMS 119 for a total of 10 semester credit hours 11.0 MLT-Phlebotomy Career Technical Education The MLT department is offering a Phlebotomy Short Certification program for students interested in a healthcare career. The program can be completed in one semester. Upon successful completion of MLT 100, which includes a clinical rotation in phlebotomy, MLT 131, PSY 200 and additional general elective from MLT/CLT or General Education students become eligible to sit for the national certification exam through the NHA (National Healthcareer Association). This certification can pave the way for employment as a phlebotomist in a hospital or clinic setting U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predict a 24% growth in EMS between and the demand from local employers reflect this growth. Employment is available as both full-time and part-time. Entry level pay is between $10.00 and $15.00 per hour. Local employers include Ambulance Services, Fire Departments, and other health care facilities. Credential: Upon completion, students are eligible to sit for the National Registry examination and apply for a State of Alabama EMT license. The healthcare industry depends on the ability of trained phlebotomists for the collection of blood samples used for the diagnosis of disease. According to the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP), wage and salary survey conducted in 2014, the vacancy rate for phlebotomy nationwide is 15.1%. Phlebotomy also has the highest vacancy rates for both staff, at 14.69% and supervisors at 19.72%. Results show that 11.54% of employees in phlebotomy are anticipated to retire in the next 5 years. Currently, the average mean hourly wage for a phlebotomist is $ Credential: Students successfully completing MLT 100 and MLT 131 are eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Phlebotomy Certification examination. With the addition of PSY 200 and additional general electives from MLT/CLT or General Education the student will also be eligible for the Short Certificate in Medical Laboratory. The Short-Term Certificate program will allow a stackable credential so that students may obtain employment in the field while completing the AAS degree. Page 1 of 11

2 Child Development Basic Short Certificate (Emphasis Child Development Associate Credential) Career Technical Education The CHD Basic Certificate is comprised of four courses; three designated, aligned to Child Development Associate (CDA) nationally recognized credential requirements and an elective (within the degree) college course Welding Career Technical Education The program allows students to earn certificate (28 hrs.), advanced certificates (40 hrs.), and AAS degree (65 hrs.) in Welding Technology. Additionally, the program is based on the NCCER curriculum. Every welding course provides the opportunity for students to receive credit for a number of NCCER modules. NCCER Level 1 can be received in four courses. TABE Online Requirement: Mathematics, Level D, 10.0 Head Start teachers/assistant teachers are required to have a CDA credential within six months of hire. Alabama Pre-K requires the equivalent coursework of a CDA to be hired as an assistant teacher. The demand for a minimal amount of education equivalent to the nationally recognized CDA is growing. Credential: At the end of the program, students are eligible to apply for the nationally recognized first step CDA credential and the Child Development Basic Certificate. In addition, the Certificate is designed to feed into AAS CHD degree requirements. Demand for skilled workers is high throughout the Region, the state, and the entire nation. According to Weld-Ed, the industry needs about 30,000 welders annually to produce 238,000 new and replacement workers through The welding shortage is part of a broader skills gap in an economy that domestic manufacturing companies may be losing up to 11 percent of their annual earnings because of a shortage of skilled workers. Locally, Region 4 has identified manufacturing as the number one target industry and welding/fitters as the number one occupation for the Region. According to the Alabama Department of Labor, welders in Region 4 have a 1.60 percent growth rate with over 200 job openings per year for two-year program graduates. Credential: NCCER Level 1. 3 Administrative Medical Assistant-FAST-TRACK An administrative medical assistant provides various kinds of medical administrative support. The opportunities of administrative medical assistants vary from working in the offices of general medical and surgical hospitals, physicians, chiropractors, and outpatient care centers to many other medical facilities. The responsibilities of administrative medical assistants include a strong combination of knowledge of automated medical equipment and patient care, as well as an understanding of medical office protocols. The administrative medical assistant program consists of 96 hours, 16 weeks and 32 sessions. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 12% growth in administrative medical assistant through Employment is both full-time and part-time. Entry level pay is between $14.00 and $16.00 per hour. Credential: CMAA (Certified Medical Administrative Assistant); CPAR (Certified Patient Account Representative) 10.0 Certified Apartment Leasing - FAST-TRACK The opportunities in the apartment industry are many. Individuals who pursue this field find positions as multi-family property leasing consultants, property assistant managers, and with experience certified property managers. The certified apartment leasing program consists of 19 hours, 6 weeks and 12 sessions. 9.0 Certified Nursing Assistant- FAST-TRACK A certified nursing assistant is a trained professional who helps patients or clients with healthcare needs under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. The opportunities vary from working in skilled nursing facilities, home healthcare, hospitals, to retirement communities. The responsibilities of certified nursing assistants include direct patient contact and care, strong interpersonal skills, infection control, documenting and reporting. The certified nursing assistant program consists of 110 hours including 20 hours of clinical rotation, 14 weeks and 28 sessions. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predict an 8% growth in certified apartment leasing through Entry level pay, depending on the size and location of the community and bonus pay structure, is between $12.00 and $20.00 per hour. A certified apartment leasing professional may also receive discounted living on site. Credential: NALP (National Apartment Leasing Professional) The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predict a 17% growth in certified nursing assistant through Entry level pay is between $11.00 and $14.00 per hour. 4 Clinical Medical Assistant- FAST-TRACK A clinical medical assistant is a medical support professional, who works under the direct supervision of a physician. A clinical medical assistant performs a variety of tasks to assist physicians in providing patient care, while ensuring that clinics and hospitals run smoothly. The opportunities as a clinical medical assistant vary from physicians offices, hospitals, outpatient clinics to other healthcare facilities. The responsibilities of a clinical medical assistant include collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, performing basic laboratory tests, disposing of contaminated supplies, sterilizing medical instruments and instructing patients about medications and special diets. The clinical medical assistant program consists of 300 hours, 19 weeks and 52 sessions. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predict a 23% growth in clinical medical assistant through 2024.Entry level pay is between $13.00 and $16.00 per hour. Credential: CCMA (Clinical Medical Assistant) 9.0 Computer Technician- FAST-TRACK A computer technician repairs and solves issues concerning desktop computers, laptops and other types of computer equipment. Opportunities as a computer technician range from a technician who repairs hardware and software in a retail store, to a telephone technical support advisor, to a member of an organizational IT team. The responsibilities of a computer technician include repair, networking, security, knowledge of components and operational procedures. The computer technician program consists of 126 hours, 21 weeks and 42 sessions. 8.0 Dental Assistant- FAST-TRACK A dental assistant identifies and prepares instruments for dental procedures, manages charting and creates molds. Opportunities for an assistant include working in a dental office setting as an entry-level dental assistant, receptionist, and handling front and back office duties. The dental assistant program consists of 55 hours, 11 weeks and 22 classes. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predict a 12% growth in computer technicians through Entry level pay as an A+ certified professional is between $16.00 and $24.00 per hour. Pay increases with multiple certifications. Credential: A+, Security+, Network+ The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predict an 18% growth in dental assistants through Entry level pay for an assistant is between $15.00 and $17.00 per hour. A dental assistant may test to become a hygienist and make up to $30.00 per hour. Credential: No certification required for dental assistant. **Option to become a Hygienist. Page 4 of 11

5 Dialysis Technician- FAST-TRACK A dialysis technician assembles, sterilizes and operates a dialysis kidney machine. Opportunities for a dialysis technician exist within hospitals, outpatient clinics and other medical facilities. The responsibilities of a dialysis technician include reviewing a patient s chart and starting dialysis according to prescription, maintaining confidentiality and providing the patient with care instruction. The dialysis technician program consists of 60 hours, 10 weeks, and 20 classes. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predict a 14% growth through Entry level pay for a Dialysis Technician is between $14.00 and $16.00 per hour. Credential: BONENT (Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology); NNCC (Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission); NNCO (National Nephrology Certification Organization) 8.0 Medical Assistant for Vision- FAST-TRACK A Vision Assistant conducts diagnostic tests, measures and records vision as well as test eye muscle function. Opportunities exist in physician offices, vision care clinics, and eye glass centers. The medical assistant for vision program consists of 60 hours, 10 weeks, and 20 classes. TABE Online Requirement: Mathematics, Level D, 8.0 Medical Billing and Coding- FAST-TRACK A medical billing and coding specialist conducts coding and billing for insurance claims and may also assist with pre-authorization and collection processes. Opportunities exist in medical office settings such as clinics or hospitals. Pay is increased with multiple AAPC credentials. The medical billing and coding program consists of 121 hours, 18 weeks, and 35 classes. 9.0 The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predict a 24% growth through Entry level pay for a Vision Assistant is between $14.00 and $18.00 per hour. Credential: COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant); COT (Certified Ophthalmic Technician); COMT (Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist) The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predict a 15% growth through Entry level pay is between $15.00 and $19.00 per hour. Pay increases significantly with more certifications and may range from $22.00 to $31.00 per hour. Credential: COC/CIC (Certified Outpatient. Inpatient Coding); CRC(Certified Risk Adjustment Coder); CPCPCertified Professional Coder-Payer); CBCS(Certified Billing and Coding Specialist); CCA (Certified Coding Associate); CCS (Certified Coding Specialist); CCSP (Certified Coding Specialist-Physician based); AHIMA Specialty certifications available as well. 6 Microsoft Office Specialist- FAST-TRACK A Microsoft office specialist develops and manages office records and databases as well as supplies and budgeting. Opportunities as a Microsoft office specialist exist in higher level management roles such as executive secretary, unit clerk, and office administrator in legal and medical offices. The Microsoft office specialist program consists of 91 hours, 13 weeks, and 26 classes. Pharmacy Technician FAST-TRACK A pharmacy technician measures medications, fills prescriptions, tracks inventory and enters patient information into online databases. Opportunities exist in drug stores, pharmacies, hospitals, grocery stores and department stores. The pharmacy technician program consists of 66 hours, 10 weeks, and 22 classes. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predict an 8% growth (slightly faster than average) through Entry level pay is between $13.00 and $17.00 per hour. Credential: MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) and MTA (Microsoft Technology Associate). The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics predict a 9% growth through Entry level pay is between $13.00 and $17.00 per hour. Credential: CPHT (certified pharmacy technician); Required to Register with the Alabama Board of Pharmacy to work in a pharmacy. TABE Online Requirement: Mathematics, Level D, 10.0 Phlebotomy- FAST-TRACK A phlebotomist draws blood, verifies donor identity, labels and maintains test tubes as well as enters patient information into databases. Opportunities in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, blood donor centers and physician offices. The Phlebotomy program consists of 144 hours including 48 hours in clinical, 16 weeks, and 32 classes.
