1 Technicians & Nurses Program The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO ) is pleased to sponsor the Technicians & Nurses Program, May 6-8 at the, Los Angeles, CA. JCAHPO is the national certifying agency for allied ophthalmic personnel. Certification is available at 3 levels: assistant, technician, and medical technologist, along with a subspecialty certification available in surgical assisting. In pursuit of its mission, JCAHPO also provides education and services for allied ophthalmic personnel. In addition to the JCAHPO-sponsored Technicians & Nurses Program, ATPO (Association of Technical Personnel in Ophthalmology) is offering COA/COT/COMT Certification Exam Review Sessions Friday, May 5, 2017, at the. Further information regarding the Technicians & Nurses Program, ATPO s Certification Exam Review Sessions, or JCAHPO certification, is available by calling JCAHPO at (800) or visiting Attendees do not register by session. They can choose to attend individual courses from either of the two sessions, each day. There are no individual tickets sold for courses; your badge allows access to the programs. A joint registration category is available for those interested in attending both the ASOA and Technicians & Nurses programs. Crossover between the ASOA and Technicians & Nurses programs will be permitted to those registered in the joint registration category only. Those registered solely for either the ASOA or Technicians & Nurses program will not be allowed to crossover. All registrants in either category are welcome to attend the ASCRS program. Continuing Education Credit The Technicians & Nurses Program has been JCAHPO approved. Credits awarded appear in the Final Program. A maximum of 18 (Group A) JCAHPO credits are available for this program, and a maximum of 18 CA BRN contact hours. Please check courses in the final program for credit designation. Additionally, allied ophthalmic personnel can earn continuing education credits in Group B by attending physician courses/symposia/paper sessions at ASCRS that are designated for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit. The following restrictions apply: COAs and COTs receive 1 credit for 2 hours attended; COMTs receive 1 credit for 1 hour attended. All courses in the Technicians & Nurses Program have been approved for JCAHPO (Group A) credits. Select courses are approved for CA BRN, OPS and AOC credits. Program Sponsored by JCAHPO

2 Saturday, May 6 Clinical/Medical Session #1 Level 2, 8:00 a.m. CL/MED-1 Legislative and Regulatory Update: MACRA Overview Nancey McCann Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will outline and review MACRA (Medicare Access and Chip Reauthorization Act) with a focus on MIPS (Merit Based Incentive Payment System). The course will also provide an update on legislative and regulatory issues impacting ophthalmology. CL/MED-2 Principal Investigator Responsibilities in Clinical Trials Diana Hatsis, BSN, RN, COT 0.5 OPS credit Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will review the responsibilities of Principal Investigators in clinical trials. It will outline which responsibilities are able to be delegated and what is meant by oversight as required by a clinical trial investigator. CL/MED-3 Clinical Applications of Anterior Segment OCT Sponsored by the Ophthalmic Photographers Society (OPS) Sarah Armstrong, CRA, OCT-C, FOPS Faculty: Kenneth L. Cohen, MD 1.0 OPS credit Synopsis & Educational Value: Anterior segment OCT's longer wavelength of light allows deeper penetration of tissues, resulting in higher resolution of images. Course will highlight current

3 manufacturers of AS-OCTs, and will address hardware, imaging technique and data interpretation. Clinical applications will be discussed for the following: contact lens fitting, DSEK, cataract surgery, corneal thickness and more. 1:30 p.m. CL/MED-4 Just Bag It! Hazardous Waste Disposal in Your Clinic Dianna E. Graves, BS Ed, COMT Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will discuss hazardous waste and its disposal in the clinic. It will cover proper protocol for hazardous waste disposal, body fluid precautions, and guidelines to follow to keep the clinic and patient safe. 2:45 CL/MED-5 Glaucoma: Tech-knowledge-y Bobbi E. Ballenberg, COMT, OSC 0.5 OPS credit Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will present the current technologies being used in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. The emphasis will be on the technician s role in the work-up, diagnostic testing and education of patients, including pearls to achieve optimal test results and suggestions for improving patient compliance with their prescribed treatment regimens. CL/MED-6 Medicolegal Issues of the Electronic Health Record Hans K. Bruhn, MHS Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will discuss electronic healthcare record challenges and provide examples of where documentation can go wrong, causing patient harm. Course will also review what malpractice attorneys look for in good medical record documentation, and solutions for better utilizing an EHR system and safeguarding from liability. Myers, MD Course Level: Advanced Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will cover controversial topics concerning the risk and benefits of the use of FDA on-label and off-label intraocular medications to improve surgical outcomes. Physiology of intracameral agents and the relationship to TASS, regulatory issues, intracameral dilation options and IFIS, and povidone iodine antisepsis will be discussed. SUR/ASC-2 Presbyopia Update John T. LiVecchi, MD, FACS Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will advance the attendee's knowledge of presbyopia. It will review the mechanisms of accommodation and discuss the current methods to surgically correct presbyopia. A brief history of the evolution of presbyopia will also be discussed. SUR/ASC-3 Surgical Assisting in the ASC Diana Hatsis, BSN, RN, COT Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will present information on universal precautions, aseptic technique and gowning/gloving requirements. It will include information on techniques in surgical assisting, care and handling of microsurgical instruments, and sterilization procedures. Patient preparation, informed consent and postoperative instructions will also be addressed. 1:30 p.m. SUR/ASC-4 Advanced Ophthalmic Pharmacology Vasudha Panday, MD Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will take the experienced ophthalmic technician through an upto-date review of classes of ophthalmic medications, their uses and their potential side-effects. Commonly-used medications of each class will be described and used to illustrate important properties of groups of medications, which should help the technician in day-to-day clinical practice.

Metzinger, MD Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will describe toxic anterior segment syndrome, its cause, symptoms and treatment, and how this syndrome can be avoided. Proper cleaning and disinfection of ophthalmic surgical instruments will also be discussed. SUR/ASC-6 Refractive Surgery: Patient and Treatment Selection Karl G. Stonecipher, MD Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will discuss the state-of-the-art of refractive, refractive-cataract and presbyopia-correcting surgery. It will feature interactive discussion regarding what can be treated and which patients are candidates for the various procedures. Sunday, May 7 Clinical/Medical Session #2 Level 2, 8:00 a.m. CL/MED-7 A to Z in Ophthalmology Craig Simms, BSc, COMT, ROUB, CDOS Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will review an example of an eye condition or disease for each letter of the alphabet. Photos, ultrasound, electrophysiology, IVFA, and video images of ocular conditions will be used to illustrate pathology. A short discussion on conditions will be offered to help the participants recognize them in their clinic. CL/MED-8 Standardizing Measurements for Clinical Research and Outcomes Studies Amy Jost, COMT, CCRC, OSC

6 Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will review the importance of using standardized testing measurements for collecting data for research and outcomes studies. It will discuss diagnostic testing commonly used for clinical research studies. Emphasis will be placed on calibration of testing equipment, appropriate staff training and consistency in exam procedures. CL/MED-9 If You Had a Broken Leg, I Could Help You Christine McDonald, COA, COE, ROUB, OSC Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will discuss patient advocacy. The course will explore what happens to a patient when poor histories are taken, symptoms are not considered, and medications are being prescribed from multiple doctors. 1:30 p.m. CL/MED-10 Scribing in Electronic Medical Records: Do s and Don ts Paul M. Larson, MBA, COMT, COE Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will describe the important differences in chart documentation when a scribe is charting within an electronic medical record (EMR) as opposed to paper charts. Relevant regulations and important considerations related to scribe use will also be discussed. 2:45 CL/MED-11 OCT Angiography with Cirrus HD-OCT William Machesney 1.0 OPS credit Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will discuss how to use a Cirrus OCT to view blood flow and areas of non-perfusion without contrast dye. CL/MED-12 Refractions: What Do Those Numbers Really Mean? Patricia Kennedy, COMT, CPC, COE

7 Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will provide an overview of refractometry, a task most technicians perform multiple times a day in a clinic. Understanding what the numbers mean in the final script can make the difference in whether or not the endpoint is accurate. Sunday, May 7 Surgical/ASC & Nursing Session #2 Level 2, 8:00 a.m. SUR/ASC-7 Advanced Contact Lens Fitting: Keratoconus, Penetrating Keratoplasty and Post-Refractive Surgery Rebecca C. Metzinger, MD Course Level: Advanced Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will teach specific techniques for fitting contact lenses (mainly rigid) on difficult-to-fit corneas, including post-keratoplasty, keratoconus, and post-refractive surgical corneas. SUR/ASC-8 Facial Injectables: An Ophthalmologist s Perspective Steve Yoelin, MD Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will discuss the various ways in which to use neurotoxins and dermal fillers in order to attain the best and most appreciative results possible. SUR/ASC-9 OCT Analysis in Glaucoma Kevin Kaplowitz, MD 1.0 OPS credit Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will review the use of Optical Coherence Tomography for glaucoma. We will first review the concepts behind the test for its application to detect nerve thinning, the basics of assessing reliability, and then focus on how it can be used to monitor the progression of glaucoma. 1:30 p.m. SUR/ASC-10 Visual Fields

The history and evolution of the various eye transplants created to restore vision will be presented. SUR/ASC-12 Clinical-Pathology Correlation of Common Periocular Lesions Todd Mondzelewski, MD Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will review common neoplasms and lesions of the cornea, conjunctiva and eyelids with histopathological correlation. Monday, May 8 Clinical/Medical Session #3 Level 2, 8:00 a.m. CL/MED-13 Looking Beyond Clinical Challenges Craig Simms, BSc, COMT, ROUB, CDOS Faculty: Matthew Parker, PhD, LSSMBB, CTC, COMT, OSC Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will outline how to consider different approaches while maintaining the confidence of the patient and producing excellent technical results. Examples of everyday

9 clinical challenges that can turn into errors or mistakes will be outlined. It will also provide an opportunity for participants to ask specific questions to a panel. CL/MED-14 Ocular Imaging Techniques for Glaucoma, Cornea and Retina: Pearls and Pitfalls Vikas Chopra, MD 1.0 OPS credit Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will serve as a guide for technicians to improve their abilities to acquire high quality images from commonly used ophthalmic devices. Pearls and pitfalls of acquiring and interpreting images from ophthalmic devices including OCT, IOLMaster, and Corneal Topography will be presented. Clinical case presentations will help highlight examples to enhance understanding of the clinical relevance of ocular imaging. CL/MED-15 Use of Electroretinography (ERG) and Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) Testing in Ophthalmic Practice April Anderson, CAS Faculty: Joanne Yawn, COT, William E. Sponsel, MD, FACS Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will discuss, in-depth, standardized flash and pattern VEP and ERG modalities. Test methods and protocols, patient and stimuli set-up will be reviewed to evoke a measureable response from the patient s visual pathway, with consideration to their pathology. Quality test results, including wave forms and data will be reviewed for medical decision-making. 1:30 p.m. CL/MED-16 Swept Source Biometry Robert D. Emerson, COA Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will review basic swept source biometry technology. It will include review of operator technique, how to ensure reliable measurements, and how to troubleshoot common obstacles. Monday, May 8 Surgical/ASC & Nursing Session #3 Level 2, 8:00 a.m. SUR/ASC-13 ASC Compliance with Life Safety Codes Elethia Dean, RN, PhD Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will cover updates to Life Safety Code and Healthcare Facilities Codes affecting the ambulatory surgery center. The course will detail how the 2012 version of NFPA 101 and NFPA 99 applies to the ophthalmic ambulatory surgery center. SUR/ASC-14 Biometry and IOL Calculations Daniel H. Chang, MD Faculty: Jacqueline Whinery, CCRC Synopsis & Educational Value: This lecture-based course will discuss the role of biometry in IOL power calculations. Methods of evaluating quality and repeatability of measurements will be covered. Special cases of IOL power calculations, including post-refractive calculations will be addressed.
