1 Technicians & Nurses Program The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO ) is pleased to sponsor the Technicians & Nurses Program, May 6-8 at the, Los Angeles, CA. JCAHPO is the national certifying agency for allied ophthalmic personnel. Certification is available at 3 levels: assistant, technician, and medical technologist, along with a subspecialty certification available in surgical assisting. In pursuit of its mission, JCAHPO also provides education and services for allied ophthalmic personnel. In addition to the JCAHPO-sponsored Technicians & Nurses Program, ATPO (Association of Technical Personnel in Ophthalmology) is offering COA/COT/COMT Certification Exam Review Sessions Friday, May 5, 2017, at the. Further information regarding the Technicians & Nurses Program, ATPO s Certification Exam Review Sessions, or JCAHPO certification, is available by calling JCAHPO at (800) or visiting Attendees do not register by session. They can choose to attend individual courses from either of the two sessions, each day. There are no individual tickets sold for courses; your badge allows access to the programs. A joint registration category is available for those interested in attending both the ASOA and Technicians & Nurses programs. Crossover between the ASOA and Technicians & Nurses programs will be permitted to those registered in the joint registration category only. Those registered solely for either the ASOA or Technicians & Nurses program will not be allowed to crossover. All registrants in either category are welcome to attend the ASCRS program. Continuing Education Credit The Technicians & Nurses Program has been JCAHPO approved. Credits awarded appear in the Final Program. A maximum of 18 (Group A) JCAHPO credits are available for this program, and a maximum of 18 CA BRN contact hours. Please check courses in the final program for credit designation. Additionally, allied ophthalmic personnel can earn continuing education credits in Group B by attending physician courses/symposia/paper sessions at ASCRS that are designated for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit. The following restrictions apply: COAs and COTs receive 1 credit for 2 hours attended; COMTs receive 1 credit for 1 hour attended. The course will also provide an update on legislative and regulatory issues impacting ophthalmology. It will outline which responsibilities are able to be delegated and what is meant by oversight as required by a clinical trial investigator. Physiology of intracameral agents and the relationship to TASS, regulatory issues, intracameral dilation options and IFIS, and povidone iodine antisepsis will be discussed. SUR/ASC-2 Presbyopia Update John T. LiVecchi, MD, FACS Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will advance the attendee's knowledge of presbyopia. It will review the mechanisms of accommodation and discuss the current methods to surgically correct presbyopia. A brief history of the evolution of presbyopia will also be discussed. SUR/ASC-3 Surgical Assisting in the ASC Diana Hatsis, BSN, RN, COT Synopsis & Educational Value: Course will present information on universal precautions, aseptic technique and gowning/gloving requirements. It will include information on techniques in surgical assisting, care and handling of microsurgical instruments, and sterilization procedures. Commonly-used medications of each class will be described and used to illustrate important properties of groups of medications, which should help the technician in day-to-day clinical practice.
