THE SEARCH EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER Nashville, Tennessee (VUMC) seeks a seasoned and entrepreneurial individual to serve as executive vice president & chief development officer (EVP) and lead the institution s fundraising efforts. The position becomes available at a pivotal time in VUMC s history, following its reorganization with Vanderbilt University to become legally and financially separate, and as it seeks to dramatically increase private philanthropic support that will profoundly impact patient care, fund biomedical research and training, and aid in the recruitment of clinicians who are national leaders in their disciplines. The EVP will craft a multi-year development plan to fund the initiatives set forth by Dr. Jeff Balser, the President and CEO of VUMC. S/he will partner with and provide guidance and direction to Balser, senior leaders, and key members of the VUMC community, as they engage individuals, foundations and corporations capable of making transformational gifts in support of the institution s highest priorities. Together, the EVP and senior leaders will promote a culture of philanthropy within the VUMC community of grateful patients and families, donors, staff members, and friends, and convey to them the critical role private philanthropic support has to the growth and sustainability of the hospitals and programs that comprise the medical center. The ideal candidate should be a self-starter who uses an innovative approach to building and guiding a program, and who has the ability to reach out to a broader community to promote the mission of an institution. S/he will have at least ten years of leadership experience in a complex organization (preferably in academic medicine and/or clinical and basic research); a track record of success securing significant gifts in support of an institution; and the exceptional interpersonal and collaborative skills required to effectively engage key leaders and other members of the VUMC community in the fundraising process. Managing more than 2 million patient visits each year, VUMC is one of the largest academic medical centers in the Southeast, and is the primary resource for specialty and primary care in hundreds of adult and pediatric specialties throughout Tennessee and the Mid-South. VUMC is a comprehensive health care facility dedicated to innovative research, distinguished and highly-competitive training programs, and highly personalized patient care. Its reputation for excellence in each of these areas has made the medical center a major patient referral center in the Southeast and a national leader in health care.

VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER Search for the Executive Vice President & Chief Development Officer has built a strong reputation as a leader in medical education, research and patient care throughout the nation over the course of its 135- year history. VUMC consists of a growing array of inpatient hospitals and ambulatory facilities. At its heart, the medical center is driven by discovery and the immediate incorporation of new knowledge into innovation in patient care and physician and nurse education. It is a unified medical center with a unified strategy. Investments in clinical care, research, quality and patient safety, and customer service all reinforce each other. VUMC is known for its highly acclaimed teaching hospitals and its groundbreaking efforts in electronic medical records. Each year, VUMC clinicians provide more than 2.1 million ambulatory visits, perform more than 62,000 surgical procedures, and see 120,000 patients in its adult and pediatric Emergency Rooms. The Medical Center employs over 20,000 staff, and is the largest private employer of Tennessee citizens. Vanderbilt biomedical scientists conduct more than $500 million of federally and corporately sponsored research each year, and the medical school ranks #8 in the US in National Institutes of Health funding. (Background on the individual hospitals, centers and units within VUMC may be found in the appendix to this document.) PATIENT CARE The highly acclaimed Vanderbilt University Hospitals and Vanderbilt Clinic are teaching and patient-care facilities with over 900 beds and are supported by the most up-to-date systems and technology, including national leadership in electronic medical records. Other key components include the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, Bill Wilkerson Center for Hearing and Speech, the Psychiatric Hospital at Vanderbilt, and the Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital. In addition, the Nashville Veterans Administration Hospital is located within the VUMC footprint. In 2008, the Medical Center moved 23 clinics into the renovated 100 Oaks Mall in the Berry Hill section of Nashville, filling 440,000 square feet of space 9 miles from the main campus, and beginning a major diversification of its geographic footprint that now includes hundreds of clinical care locations throughout middle Tennessee. Together, VUMC clinical programs consistently rank among the premier health-care facilities in the United States. VUMC s 4 major hospitals are located on the historic Vanderbilt University campus, greatly increasing opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific discovery. VUMC also leads a statewide clinical network, the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network (VHAN), among the largest provider-managed affiliated networks in the US. Established in 2012, VHAN and has developed a large network of participating providers, including nine hospital systems (more than 50 hospitals in the aggregate) and more than 4000 physicians across the State. The over 200,000 lives under management are currently a combination of the employees of the hospital members and other lives contributed by employers. The VHAN network comprises a large portion of the referral network for VUMC in the State, and is a tremendous opportunity for statewide brand development and philanthropic activity. Page 2

Other notable facts that emphasize the medical center s broad impact, excellence and leadership include: The region s only Level I Trauma Center LifeFlight, an integrated air and ground emergency transport system with five helicopters, operated by Air Methods and staffed with Vanderbilt flight paramedics and nurses; and an airplane transport, which makes more than 2,800 flights a year The only Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the region as well as a dedicated pediatric emergency department and pediatric trauma unit The most comprehensive and only Level III regional adult and pediatric burn center in the region The largest and most comprehensive transplant program in the region The first medical center in Middle Tennessee designated as a Magnet center for high quality nursing care by the American Nurses Credentialing Center Recognized as a US News and World Report Best Hospital (ranked #1 in Tennessee) with 20 nationally-ranked adult and pediatric specialties In June 2017, US News & World Report s annual rankings recognized Carrel Monroe Carell Children s Hospital as among the nation s Best Children s Hospitals for the 11 th year consecutive year Vanderbilt University Hospital earned a patient safety grade of A in 2016 from the Leapfrog Group, a coalition of public and private purchasers of employee health coverage that works to encourage healthcare safety, quality, and affordability A stroke program accredited as an Advanced Certification Comprehensive Stroke Center, which excels at treating the most complex stroke cases A groundbreaking Teleneurology program that provides emergency care throughout Tennessee and neighboring regions. LEADER IN ORGAN TRANSPLANTS VUMC also offers an organ transplantation center. The center s first kidney transplant was performed in 1962; since then there have been more than 5,000 kidneys transplanted at VUMC and the Nashville Veterans Administration. VUMC has also performed more than 1700 liver transplants and over 1200 heart and lung transplants. Among the medical center s other transplant milestones were Tennessee s first pancreas transplant in 1985; the first successful heart-lung transplant in the state in 1987; the first pediatric heart transplant in the state in 1987; and the first triple organ transplant of heart, lungs and liver in VUMC s heart transplant volume was the 2 nd largest in the US in 2016, and is #1 in the US year-to-date in Page 3

RESEARCH In , investigators at VUMC received over $458 million in research funding. The tremendous research infrastructure emphasizes collaboration and has facilitated the success of interdisciplinary programs, including a major NIH award for the Precision Medicine Initiative Data and Research Center, and the recent renewal of a large Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) that provides patient-oriented research support to clinician scientists at VUMC and nationwide. Initiatives such as the deidentified DNA databank BioVU have further fostered vanguard research both within VUMC and the University. Further, the outstanding clinical research infrastructure has enabled significant clinical trials at VUMC, including a current phase I clinical trial for a novel Alzheimer s treatment. This study began with preclinical discoveries at Vanderbilt and continued through high throughput ligand screening, medicinal chemistry, and formulation at the Vanderbilt Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery. This research exemplifies the bench-to-bedside research programs that draw upon basic discovery science at the University and are facilitated by VUMC infrastructure. VUMC houses approximately 80% of the research attributed to the Vanderbilt School of Medicine now ranked #8 in the US in NIH grant awards. VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY AND VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER REORGANIZATION (VUMC) is now operating as a fully independent, nonprofit entity, following the completion of the legal transaction on April 30, 2016 that separated it legally and financially from Vanderbilt University. The transition positions VUMC for future growth and investment, while preserving its tightly woven connections to the university in research and teaching. VUMC is now governed by its own 11- member Board of Directors. The restructuring of Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center began in November 2014 following a yearlong study by the Vanderbilt University Board of Trust in response to the rapidly changing health care economy. As an independent entity, VUMC has direct capital market access to assure it can compete effectively in the health marketplace. Its new flexible governance structure supports the continued growth of the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network, as well as its plans for expansion of research, training, and clinical care in facilities it owns and operates throughout middle Tennessee. As a separate legal entity, VUMC is not under common governance with or controlled by the University, and the University is not financially responsible for VUMC indebtedness. VUMC will always maintain an ongoing academic affiliation with the University, while independently operating all health care programs, graduate medical education and training (clinical residency and fellowship training) programs, and research programs conducted through its clinical department clinicians and scientists. VUMC is the employer of substantially all personnel (including all physicians) of the 20,000-person workforce of the Medical Center. The University retained the degree-granting medical educational programs for the School of Medicine and the Graduate School (M.D. and Ph.D. degrees), while VUMC-employed physicians continue to provide the majority of the M.D., and a substantial proportion of the Ph.D. educational experiences through the academic affiliation with Vanderbilt University. Page 4

In order to maintain continuity among the M.D educational programs and the medical center s clinical programs, The President and Chief Executive Officer of VUMC, Dr. Jeff Balser, serves concurrently as Dean of the University s School of Medicine. The University also has minority representation on the VUMC Board of Directors LEADERSHIP Jeffrey R. Balser, MD, PhD President and CEO, Dean of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine Dr. Balser undertook his residency training in anesthesiology and fellowship training in cardiac anesthesiology and in critical care medicine at The Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. In 1995, he joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins where he practiced cardiac anesthesiology, ICU medicine, and led an NIH-funded research program aimed at the genetics of cardiac rhythm disorders, such as sudden cardiac death. Balser returned to Vanderbilt in 1998 as associate dean for physician scientist development and soon was appointed chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, directing one of the medical center s largest clinical service programs. He became the medical Center s chief research officer in 2004, leading a period of scientific expansion that moved the Medical Center into the nation s top 10 in NIH funding, launching bigscience programs integrating health informatics and genomics that stimulated the Medical Center s national leadership in personalized medicine. In 2008, he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine, and later that year was named the eleventh dean of Vanderbilt s School of Medicine since its founding in In 2009, he was also named vice chancellor for health affairs with executive responsibility for all health-related programs including the hospitals, clinics, research programs, and the medical and nursing schools. He has led the Medical Center through a period of marked service-volume growth with major inpatient expansions of the children s hospital and the adult care areas, bolstered by 4% compound annual growth of outpatient visits (over 2.1 million per year), and by the creation of the region s largest, multi-state provider-led network, the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network. In , Balser led a $230 million (8%) cost reduction across all mission areas, improving the Medical Center s competitive positions in a rapidly evolving price-sensitive marketplace. In coordination with the Vanderbilt chancellor and Board of Trust, he has led the Medical Center through the restructuring process that in May, 2016 placed VUMC into a financially distinct not-for-profit corporation. As president and CEO of VUMC, Balser serves on the 11- member Board of Directors, while also serving as dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Page 5
