Biographical Sketch Rosemarie Rizzo Parse was born in Pennsylvania in She went on to graduate from St. Francis Academy in 1956, before enrolling at Duquesne University. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Duquesne in 1960 before moving on to the University of Pittsburgh and completing her master s in Nursing in 1961 and her doctorate in Nursing and Higher Education in She began her teaching career at the University of Pittsburgh while finishing her Ph.D. before accepting a position at Duquesne in She served as Dean of the School of Nursing at Duquesne from and left the university in 1983 to serve as a professor and the coordinator of the Center for Nursing Research at Hunter College of the City University of New York. She remained at Hunter College until she accepted a position as the Niehoff Chair at Loyola University Chicago Niehoff School of Nursing in In 2006, she left Loyola and has served as a consultant and visiting scholar at New York University College of Nursing. Dr. Parse made considerable contributions to the field of nursing, most significantly her theory of Man-Living Health which she renamed the Human Becoming Theory in Her theory is internationally known through her nine books and over one hundred articles as well as the many other works based upon her theory published by other scholars. She has presented her theory all over the world and had her books translated into several different languages. She also founded Nursing Science Quarterly, a journal dedicated to the study of nursing theory and research. She is also the founder of the Institute of Human Becoming and the president of Discovery International, Inc., a nursing consultation firm. Rosemarie Rizzo Parse Papers, , Page 1
2 Scope and Content Rosemarie Rizzo Parse Papers comprise linear feet spanning the years (bulk ) and documents her education and career in nursing. Much of the collection relates to her human becoming theory of nursing, including her own publications, her consulting company Discovery International, and conferences as well as articles and research studies that utilized her theory. The papers also contain administrative records from her time at Duquesne University and Loyola University Chicago. The collection includes photographs, VHS videos, cassettes, date books, calendars, plaques, scrapbooks, CDs, slides, and 5 ¼ floppy disks and diskettes. Languages include Italian, Japanese, Finnish, German, Korean, Japanese, Danish, and Swedish. Series Series 1: Biographical, ,. Boxes 2-5, 75 This series consists of cards and thank you notes, general correspondence as well as correspondence between Dr. Parse and Terry Fulmer, Hildegard Peplau and the Rome Center of Loyola University Chicago. Box 6 Student Activities series relates to Dr. Parse s time at St. Francis Academy in high school, Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh and includes an annotated textbook, The Drug, The Nurse, The Patient, her thesis proposal, and syllabi, presentations, articles from her nursing courses and material related to French and Chinese language courses. It is arranged alphabetically. Series 4: Teaching, ,. Boxes 7-20 The subseries are arranged chronologically beginning with Dr. Parse s time at Duquesne, then Hunter College and Loyola University Chicago, and ending with her temporary appointments as a visiting professor. Arrangement is alphabetical within each subseries. It includes grant applications, syllabi, annual reports, and faculty reports from her time as dean or an endowed chair, annual reports, and her research activities. Subseries 1: Duquesne, ,. Boxes 7-12, 76 This subseries covers Dr. Parse s time teaching at Duquesne University and includes the application for a grant to expand the administration and Master s program for the school of nursing, annual reports, Parse s appointment as Dean of the nursing school, president of the faculty senate. 3 Subseries 2: Hunter College, , Boxes Following Dr. Parse s time at Duquesne, she took a position teaching at Hunter College. The subseries contains summaries of research projects from her leadership of the Center for Nursing Research at Hunter College, the development of a Ph.D. program for CUNY, syllabi from the graduate courses she taught as well as the department newsletters. Subseries 3: Loyola University Chicago, ,. Boxes Dr. Parse then moved to Loyola to become the endowed Niehoff chair in the Niehoff School of Nursing. This subseries includes annual reports, Dr. Parse s correspondence with Gail Mitchell, articles, handouts and syllabi for the graduate courses she taught as well as lists of projects and notes from her research activities. Subseries 4: Visiting Professor, , Boxes Throughout her career, Dr. Parse spent time as a visiting professor at several institutions. This subseries includes syllabi, course catalogs, and s with other professors from New York University, Western Sydney University, Florida Atlantic University, Medical College of Georgia, Wright State, Southampton and the University of Miami among others. Boxes This series consist of four subseries that include Dr. Parse s book publications, articles and the Nursing Journal she founded and edited, the Nursing Science Quarterly, as well as works that utilize her human becoming theory. Topics include her human becoming theory, nursing education, quality of life studies and lived experience studies that are based upon her nursing theory. This subseries includes editorials written by Dr. Parse, editorial board meeting minutes, published volumes of Nursing Science Quarterly, marketing material, publishing rights and referee panel minutes. Subseries 4: Works Based on Parse s Theory, ,. Boxes Many articles and papers have been written based upon Dr. Parse s human becoming theory. This subseries consists of articles published that cite Dr. Parse or are about Dr. Parse s theory and include Italian, Danish, Swedish and Japanese publications. Series 6: Date Books and Calendars, , Boxes 45-48, 75 This series includes date books, day planners and calendars used by Dr. Parse to track appointments and keep her schedule. It is arranged chronologically. Series 7: Discovery International Inc., ,. Boxes This series contains handwritten speech notes, a catalog of cassettes available through the company, a list of seminar weekends offered by Discover International, marketing material as well as minutes from the planning committee and the founding letter. Series 8: Research Studies, ,. Boxes This series includes Dr. Parse s research studies, most significantly her human becoming 80/20 study and grants to conduct lived experience studies as well as results from those studies. It also includes a list of completed studies conducted by the University Health Network. Series 9: Conferences, ,. Boxes 51-62, 75 This series contains marketing materials, copies of papers and speeches, schedules and correspondence for notable conferences such as the European Nursing Congress, Institute of Human Becoming, Qualitative Research Colloquium, Nurse Theory Conference and the Rogerian Conference. Languages include German, Swiss, French, and Italian. The series is arranged alphabetically. Series 10: Speeches, Lectures, and Consultations, ,. Boxes 62-68, 75 This series contains lecture notes and notes for speeches delivered at various universities. It also includes Dr. Parse s consulting work with hospitals and universities seeking to implement principles from her human becoming theory into their patient care and education programs respectively. Her consultations included speeches and training handouts delivered to various hospitals. The speeches and consultations include hospitals and universities in Finland, United Kingdom, Sweden, Japan and Italy. Boxes 69-70, 76 This series includes continuing education certificates from conferences, Dr. Parse s Master s degree in nursing education from the University of Pittsburgh, and her nursing licenses from New York and Pennsylvania. It also includes several awards and distinctions such as Dr. Parse being named an American Association of Nurses Living Legend, the New York Times nursing educator of the year in 2008 and several acknowledgements of lifetime achievements and letters of appreciation. The series is arranged alphabetically and contains some oversize materials. Series 12: International Consortium of Parse Scholars, ,. Boxes This series contains copies of the Illuminations newsletter produced by the International Consortium of Parse Scholars, as well as advertisements for cassette tapes from the annual ICPS weekend seminar and programs produced by the Northeast Chapter of the ICPS. The series is arranged alphabetically. Series 13: Reference, ,. Boxes 71-73, 75 The series contains articles related to the Hildegard Peplau, another nursing theorist, as well as copies of other nursing models and articles about the nursing science and the development of theories. The series is arranged alphabetically and contains some oversize documents. Series 14: Scrapbooks, ,. Boxes This series consists of several scrapbooks pertaining to her time in high school and college, family vacations, her time teaching at Duquesne, and events sponsored by Discovery International. The scrapbooks are made up of articles, correspondence, pamphlets, and photographs and are in numerical order based on Dr. Parse s original order. There are some oversize documents. Series 15: Photographs, ,. Boxes 73, This series contains photographs and photo albums of Dr. Parse s personal and professional life. The photographs include childhood photos, family and vacation photos, and conference photos such as the Nurse Theorist Conference in Tokyo and the Institute of Human Becoming conferences. The series is arranged alphabetically. Series 16: Audiovisual, ,. Boxes This series consists of various audiovisual formats including VHS, cassettes, CDs, slides and 5 ¼ floppy disks and diskettes. The audiovisual materials include recordings from conferences such as the Institute of Human Becoming and Nurse Theorist Conference and recordings from Discovery International seminars, the University Health Network and panel discussions on nursing theories.
