1 ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW 1. Contextual Information A description of the applicant organization in terms of: Mission Vision Values History Geographical Location Services Provided Number of Licensed Beds Total RN full-time equivalents Population(s) Served Include an ethnic profile of the nursing staff, client population, and community served. Geographical Location and Number of Licensed Beds Riverside Medical Center is a general, acute care, not-for-profit, community-based hospital located in east central Illinois, approximately 55 miles south of downtown Chicago. Licensed for 336 in-patient beds, Riverside Medical Center provides a full scope of inpatient and outpatient services to the residents of the south suburban counties of Chicago and to residents of counties in rural, east central Illinois. Riverside s primary service region is the 3-city area of Kankakee County, Illinois - Kankakee, Bradley, and Bourbonnais - and Manteno. Secondary services areas encompass the communities and rural areas in Ford, Iroquois, Grundy, Livingston, and Will counties, which lie to the north, west, and south of Kankakee County. Riverside Medical Center is the hospital facility situated within the Riverside HealthCare system. Riverside HealthCare is comprised of several structures or divisions. These divisions include: Riverside Medical Center, Sojourn, Oakside Corporation, and Riverside HealthCare Foundation. The Riverside Community Health Network (CHN) is a group of physician-led clinics situated within the healthcare system in stand-alone settings. The leaders and staff of the hospital, Riverside Medical Center, are seeking designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Magnet Recognition Program hospital.

2 Sojourn, a riverside community, addresses the health care needs of the area s elderly population. Four facilities make up Sojourn, Riverside s senior living services: Butterfield Court, an assisted living facility; Miller Center, a skilled nursing facility and Westwood Oaks (apartments) and Westwood Estates (homes), which are independent retirement communities. Oakside Corporation operates the Riverside Health Fitness Center and coordinates community counseling programs, pharmacy, health equipment sales and leasing, and home health care. Riverside HealthCare Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Riverside HealthCare System. The Foundation leads fundraising efforts, which have supported facility construction and repair, new equipment acquisition, community health care education initiatives, and clinical research. Ethnic Profile: Community Served and Client Population The racial makeup of Kankakee County is 80.9% white, 14% African American or Black, 6.9% Hispanic or Latino, and 0.3% Native American. The median household income is $50,507 and 14.4% of the population lives below the poverty line. The ethnic makeup of the city of Kankakee is 50.9% white, 41.1% African American or Black, 9.3% Hispanic or Latino, and 0.3% Native American. The median household income is $30,469, which is well below the state average of $52,006. Riverside s client population reflects the ethnic population of the county. The income, employment, and insurance status of Riverside clients result in hospital services caring for a large number of uninsured and underinsured patients. Sixty-two percent of the care provided through Riverside services is for the elderly and poor, populations covered by Medicare and Medicaid. The cost of care uncovered by Medicare and Medicaid is made up through operating funds. Riverside uses a sliding scale, application process, and credit report to determine client eligibility for charity care. Charity care is provided for medically necessary services to persons who meet financial and documentation criteria. In addition, each client situation is reviewed independently and allowances are made for extenuating circumstances. Some of our employees and their families have been recipients of charity care, which has been on the rise during the recent economic downturn.

3 Total RN Full-time Equivalents and Ethnic Profile of RN Staff The total number of RN Full-time equivalents is (budgeted) and (actual). Some over-hiring has been done to off-set expected attrition over the next year due to retirement and other turnover factors. As of December of 2009 (the last time demographic information on our RN population was reviewed), 530 RNs were employed by the hospital. Of the 530 RNs, 32 are males and 498 are. The age, gender, and ethnic profiles of hospital RNs are provided in the tables below. AGE/GENDER PROFILE Riverside Medical Center RNs Age Range Males Females All RNs (Years) # Males % Males # Females % Females # RNs % RNs % 85 16% % % % % % % % % % % 60 & above 2 0.4% % % TOTALS 32 6%* %* % * Rounded to nearest % The gender distribution of male Riverside RNs at 6% is slightly lower than the 2005 U.S. percentage of 8.9% (Buerhaus, Staiger, & Auerbach, 2009). Like the U.S. RN workforce, males are under-represented in the Riverside RN workforce. The average age of Riverside RNs is approximately 46 years, several years higher than the average age of U.S. RNs at 44 (Buerhaus et al., 2009). Approximately 27% of Riverside RNs are 50 years and older, compared to approximately 34% of U.S. RNs in the same age range, according to the 2006 Current Population Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau (Buerhaus et al.). In 2006, approximately 12% of U.S. RNs were under the age of 30; representation of this age group at Riverside is higher at 17.1%. About 34% of RNs in the U.S. Census Bureau report were between the ages of 30 and 49; the percentage of Riverside RNs in this age group in 2009 was 56%. In comparing Riverside RN demographic data to U.S. Census Bureau data, it appears that Riverside has been able to recruit and retain younger RNs than the U.S. average. ETHNIC PROFILE Riverside Medical Center RNs Race White/ Caucasian Black/African American Males Females TOTAL - ALL RNs # Males % Males # Females % Females # RNs % RNs % % %* 2 0.4% % %*

4 Asian 1 0.2% % %* Hispanic/ 1 0.2% 3 0.6% 4 0.8%* Latino 2 or more races % 2 0.4%* * Rounded to nearest % In comparing the ethnic profiles of Riverside s RN population to those of the city and county of Kankakee, it is evident that the Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino populations are underrepresented in the RN population of Riverside. However, the racial distribution of RNs at Riverside is similar to the U.S. distribution in that the majority of RNs are white and female (Buerhaus et al., 2009). In other departments of Riverside such as Environmental Services, this racial disparity is not as apparent. Recruiters from Riverside s Human Resources department have shared that non- White/Caucasian applicants for RN positions remain very low. Our Awards: For three years in a row (2007, 2008, and 2009), Riverside Medical Center has been named as a 100 Top Hospital by Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare. The award is based on hospitals overall organizational performance, and is a result of evaluation in 10 areas of measurement, such as adherence to clinical standards, patient safety, and the use of information technology. The 10 areas of evaluation include mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, expenses, profitability, patient satisfaction, adherence to clinical standards of care, and post-discharge mortality and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and pneumonia. According to Jean Chenowith, senior vice president for performance improvement and 100 Top Hospitals programs at Thomson Reuters, Even during the economic

11 downturn, the 100 Top Hospitals maintained a profit from operations while raising the bar for clinical quality and patient satisfaction (MedTech Publishing, 2009, 3). On March 29, 2010, we received notification of our 2009 designation as 100 Top Hospital, and we were also one of 23 hospital recipients of the Thomson Reuters Everest Award. The Everest Award from Thomson Reuters recognized 23 hospitals that delivered the greatest rate of improvement over a five-year period. In 2007, Thomson Reuters recognized Riverside as one of the nation s 100 Top Hospitals for cardiovascular care. These awards recognize hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, financial performance, and efficiency. The cardiovascular award was based on a hospital's performance in treating congestive heart failure and heart attacks. Also in late March of 2010, Riverside was named by HealthGrades as a Recipient of the 2010 Patient Safety Excellence Award for the 5th Year in a Row ( ). Riverside Medical Center is one of only three hospitals in Illinois and one of only 59 hospitals in the U.S. to receive the award for five or more consecutive years. 12 12 Riverside Medical Center is also recognized as a Chest Pain Center with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. Riverside Medical Center received Primary Stroke Center Certification, by the Joint Commission, making it the only nationally recognized stroke program in the area. Summary: Riverside s geographical information, specialty services, patient populations, and awards and recognitions tell only a small part of Riverside s story. The people our patients, families, community members, providers, support staff, ancillary staff, and our nurses are the heart and soul of Riverside Medical Center and serve as the focus for our mission, vision, values, and history. Our Mission Like our services, our mission statement has evolved over time. In January of 2008, after several months of work and the involvement of Riverside leaders and staff, a new mission statement was introduced for Riverside Medical Center. This is explained in more detail in TL1. Today, Riverside s mission statement reflects what we currently do and also provides us with an overarching purpose to provide care that respects the inherent uniqueness of every person we serve. Our mission extends beyond the walls of the organization to include all aspects of care for every person who visits the hospital and utilizes our services. With pride, we recognize Riverside Medical Center is the largest employer in Kankakee County. Our mission reflects our service as the area and community leader in providing healthcare services: Life is a remarkable journey. Health impacts every step how we connect with others, how we express our potential, how we pursue our dreams. At Riverside, our mission is to provide healthcare experiences that are just as remarkable. We do this for each and every person, regardless of their personal or economic circumstances. We offer our highest thinking, our kindest touch, and our strongest commitment to excellence.

13 Our Vision The vision of our executive leader, President and CEO Phillip Kambic, our board of directors, our executive staff, and our employees is to be the top hospital in the state of Illinois for providing the safest and highest quality of care. Our Core Values Our core values are embedded in our mission and vision: Integrity - We respect human dignity and consistently promote fairness and honesty. Excellence - We strive for clinical, operational and service excellence by fostering professional development, accountability, teamwork and commitment to high value. Partnership - We work in cooperation with other care providers, guided by open communication, trust and shared decision-making. Stewardship - We advocate prudence in the use of our financial and human resources for the advantage of the communities we serve. Our History Our People Riverside s history is rich with stories of our people our patients, families, governing board, leaders, and employees and the contributions they have made and continue to make to stimulate Riverside s enduring growth and recognition as a regional center for care. Riverside Medical Center was originally established in response to a growing need for additional healthcare services in the community. In the late 1950s, a group of community members recognized the need for another community-based hospital in the three-city area surrounding Kankakee, Illinois. The only community-based hospital was overcrowded and inadequate to serve the growing region s need for quality healthcare. In 1958, a Kankakee Chamber of Commerce subcommittee, chaired by Mr. James G. Schneider (seen at picture on right during 1962 groundbreaking), recommended a private non-profit foundation known as the Stewards Foundation be invited to build a 150-bed hospital in Kankakee. After unfulfilled promises and delays, the committee severed ties with the Stewards Foundation and opted, instead, to build a 136-bed hospital using community funding and financial aid from federal grants.

14 The Hospital Committee, led by Mr. Schneider, purchased seven acres of scenic land along the Kankakee River (at Riverside s current location) from community members Burrell and Len Small. The Smalls donated an additional three acres for the hospital. A campaign was begun in the community to raise money for the hospital. A Hill-Burton grant of $660,000 was a major funding source. Many community members became involved, including a group of school children, who put together a neighborhood fair, and raised several hundred dollars, which the children donated to support the hospitalbuilding effort. In addition to financial support, the community participated in other hospital building endeavors. For example, in 1961, 20 people attended the first organizational meeting of the Riverside Hospital Auxiliary. By the time the hospital opened in 1964, the Auxiliary boasted 575 auxiliary members. The Riverside Auxiliary is still active today and has continued fundraising activities to support a wide variety of projects such as the establishment of the Riverside Breast Center and a number of scholarships for collegebound high school students pursuing healthcare careers. Another example of community involvement in building the new hospital was a contest to name the facility. The Hospital Committee appealed to the community to submit name suggestions for the new facility, and in 1961, Riverside Hospital was chosen as the name by community members. Hospital construction began in May 1962 with a groundbreaking ceremony on May 18, 1962 (see adjacent picture). Even before opening our doors, Riverside Hospital was accepted into the Illinois Hospital Association and American Hospital Association. Mr. Miller in 1964 In January of 1963, Robert G. Miller was named Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Mr. Miller retained this position until he retired, in Mr. Miller and Sharon Corzine Sills, administrative assistant, were the first employees of the hospital. Mr. Miller and Sharon Corzine-Sills in 2009 An open house on January 11, 1964, drew 3000 visitors, despite a Chicago-style blizzard. Riverside Hospital was dedicated on January 12, 1964, and officially opened its doors on January 22,

, as a 136-bed hospital with 125 employees and 69 physicians. Room rates were $30/day for a private room, $24/day for semi-private, and $19.50/day for a 4-bed ward. Within one month 186 full-time and 40 part-time employees worked in the hospital. Growth through the 1960s: Riverside Hospital grew quickly and plans for the hospital s first expansion project were underway before our first anniversary. A specific plan facilitated organized growth, enabling patient services to go upward while ancillary services expanded outward. In May 1965, Riverside purchased another 8.8 acres from the Small family, and by year s end, construction began on a three-story addition that not only expanded the Labor and Delivery area but also tripled the laundry capacity and doubled the X-ray department. With a newer, larger front entrance and lobby, the hospital also added 74 beds for a total of 210 inpatient beds. While growing our physical size, Riverside also led the way in excellence for patient care. In 1966, the hospital received our first accreditation from the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Hospitals (since renamed The Joint Commission), a mark of excellence we have always maintained. A new eight-bed Intensive Care Unit opened with electronic patient monitoring and the Board of Directors, our governing body, approved a recommendation to develop a 30-bed Psychiatric Unit. A new Pediatric Unit, designed exclusively for children, opened in During the late 1960s, Riverside Hospital collaborated with Olivet Nazarene College (now Olivet Nazarene University) to provide the clinical training for a four-year nursing degree program and with Kankakee Community College to establish a two-year Associate Degree Nursing Program. The Riverside Foundation was established in 1967 with Mr. Vernon Butz as President. The purpose of the Foundation was to generate philanthropic support to enhance the availability and quality of the healthcare services provided by the hospital. Since then, the Foundation has been supported by generous and thoughtful individuals, companies, and organizations that have given annual gifts, bequests, insurance, real estate, stocks, and cash donations. Growth During the 1970s: Riverside leaders concentrated growth of Riverside Hospital during the 1970s on the development of facilities and services. Community commitment continued with Mr. William Brandenburg s donation of 65 acres of farmland on the south side of Kankakee River near the city s airport to the Riverside Foundation. In 1970, Riverside started construction of a $1 million addition, the first phase of a multiyear, master plan. The addition was completed in 1971 with the opening of a new surgery suite and central sterile supply area and relocation of the Emergency Room. A year later, phase II of the plan brought a new coronary care unit to a now completed fifth floor as well as more room for diagnostic and ancillary services: new clinical lab, radiology suite, medical records, medical library, physical therapy unit

16 and an enlarged maintenance and engineering plant. In 1974, a continuing education area was completed on the lower level and the OB delivery-maternity wing was remodeled. In 1976, a new development plan called for building a new mental health unit, day surgery facilities and a new intensive care unit. Remodeling began on respiratory care, dietary, materials management and cardiac testing areas. The intensive care unit opened in 1978, along with a new outpatient clinic. During this time, Riverside received approval for a 50-bed Mental Health Unit and began its Psychiatric Day Hospital Program. Aerial view 1978 hospital expansion. On Riverside s 15th anniversary in 1979, the hospital was renamed Riverside Medical Center to reflect Riverside s growth from an inpatient facility to a comprehensive, multiple-service health organization for the community with 315 beds and 1,000 employees. Growth During the 1980s: As the 1980s dawned, Riverside Medical Center s commitment to steady growth continued. Riverside opened its first community health center in 1981 Pembroke Community Health Center in Hopkins Park, Illinois. Additional Community Health Centers followed soon after in Momence. Today there are 15 freestanding centers in the Riverside Community Health Network, making primary care physicians, specialists and services including lab, physical therapy and X-ray, readily available close to home for more area residents. The Medical Center adopted a new Mission Statement in the 1980s: Riverside Medical Center and its medical staff exist to promote health and provide the community with a superior, comprehensive healthcare system that operates in a caring, highly efficient and competitive manner. Our healthcare system shall maintain excellence through the efforts of a talented team of dedicated professionals whose actions exemplify a Caring at its best attitude. Riverside is committed to serving as a Medical Leader - a center of caring. In line with its new mission, Riverside invested in additional cutting-edge technology to analyze pediatric blood chemistry and toxicology. Investments were also made in radiographic equipment including the full body CT scanners and the linear accelerators. Riverside also implemented its Home Health Care service, quickly receiving Medicare licensure, and established the Riverside Health Equipment Store to supply area residents with everything they need for comfortable and safe home care. Riverside s Emergency Department was designated a Level II Trauma Center by the Illinois Department of Public Health in This designation guaranteed the immediate availability of specialized surgeons, anesthesiologists, trauma nurse specialists and

17 emergency medicine physicians with advanced trauma training, 24 hours a day. The Emergency Department also holds EDAP (Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics) designation, which means our E.D. has the skilled staff and age-appropriate equipment to treat children of all ages. The Riverside Senior Living Center Corporation was established in 1989 and a 10-acre parcel was approved for development of an independent living center for senior adults. In 1988, Riverside set up its Sleep Laboratory. Sleep studies and services, previously provided only at university medical centers, were now available in the Kankakee community. This era culminated in Riverside s 25th anniversary and a rededication in Growth During the 1990s: Changes in Riverside s leadership occurred in the 1990s when Mrs. Connie Ashline became our Board Chairman and our first CEO, Robert Miller, retired. A search committee selected Mr. Dennis C. Millirons as CEO and President, only the second executive leader in the organization s 30-year history. Mr. Millirons assumed leadership responsibilities on January 1, In the 1990s, several living options for seniors opened up with the construction of 90 senior independent living apartments at Westwood Oaks, 48 senior assisted living apartments at Butterfield Court, and a 120-bed skilled nursing facility. Named Miller Center in honor of our first CEO, the skilled bed facility opened in Miller Center opened in In the mid-1990 s, Riverside also adopted a new organizational mission: To provide quality, caring services that improve the health status of the communities we serve. Riverside s growth continued under the leadership of Mr. Millirons during the 1990s. Plans unfolded to implement advanced care in cancer and heart disease. Recognizing the need for a relationship with a Chicago-based healthcare delivery system, Riverside began the process of evaluating its options. In 1996, the affiliation with Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke s Medical Center (now Rush University Medical Center) became a reality. Through strong strategic and clinical ties, the Rush-Riverside relationship has produced lasting and valuable cardiac and cancer services for the people of the Kankakee Region. In May of 1996, Riverside adopted a new logo, which represents our caring hands. The logo can be seen throughout the facility, in the shape the ceiling lights and carpet on the walkway between the Pavilion building (today s main hospital entrance) and the of Mr. Millirons applauds the new logo

18 hospital building. Our logo can be seen throughout the hospital and serves as the foundation of our Professional Nursing Practice Model.. Also in the 1990s, Riverside services expanded beyond the hospital campus. Riverside purchased a former discount store in nearby Bradley, Illinois, and renovated it to become the Riverside Atrium, a satellite facility to house health equipment, ambulance services, wellness services, outpatient rehabilitation, and occupational health services. The Atrium continues to serve as a medical mall with offices for physicians, a singlespecialty orthopedic surgery center, an occupational medicine clinic, physical rehabilitation facilities, and the headquarters for Riverside Ambulance Service. In September of 1997, Riverside revealed plans to build a state-of-the-art Health Fitness Center to make the benefits of health and wellness available to more area residents. The center, located in Bourbonnais, was the first Riverside facility to locate on our north campus. The Riverside Health Fitness Center is easily accessible and offers programs for persons with chronic problems, such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, heart disease, or back pain. The 70,000 sq. ft. facility in Bourbonnais includes child care, professional fitness consultations, whirlpool, massage and numerous other amenities. Riverside Health Fitness Center also houses certain outpatient services for convenience, including sports medicine and rehabilitative medicine. In the late 1990s, Riverside and Olivet Nazarene University formed a partnership with Olivet s Athletic Department to develop a training program for Athletic Trainer. The program was also supported by Orthopedic Associates of Kankakee. The Community Alliance (comprised of Riverside, Olivet Nazarene University, Kankakee Community College, and Provena St.Mary s Hospital) formed to provide seed money for the development of the Family Violence Council. In addition, the Community Alliance purchased automatic external defibrillators to be placed in local and county police cars. In 1999, the Rush-Riverside Heart Center became a reality. A defining decision regarding Riverside s future was to pursue the development of open-heart surgery. After five years of preparation and planning by Riverside leadership, the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board, in early 1999, approved Riverside Medical Center s request to perform open-heart surgery. The first procedure was performed in on November 8,1999, and today, the program continues to grow with over 2,500 procedures annually in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, and over 250 open-heart surgeries each year. The Riverside HealthCare Foundation committed $1 million to dupport the program start-up. On March 14, 1999, Riverside and the surrounding community were thrust into national limelight when the Amtrak City of New Orleans passenger train from Chicago collided with a truck transporting 22 tons of steel at a railroad crossing in Bourbonnais. The crash Aerial view of 1999 train derailment.

19 derailed 11 of the train s 14 cars and 2 locomotives. Of the 214 passengers and 14 crew members, 11 died at the scene and many others were treated at Riverside. Riverside activated its Disaster Plan as soon as word of the crash was received. When the first ambulance arrived at Riverside s Level II Trauma Center, physicians and nurses were at the door, ready with their gurneys and emergency medical supplies. Riverside accepted 52 patients, nine with life-threatening injuries, 18 with serious injuries, and 21 non-urgent injuries; two patients required surgery. Most hospitals never actually have the experience of being involved in an actual disaster, noted Trauma/Disaster Director Sherry Mayes, RN, MSN. Although all hospitals are required to conduct a minimum of two disaster drills per year, when you are involved in a real disaster, the plan that looks good on paper may not cover all of the unknown glitches that may occur. Years of preparing for a potential disaster helped Riverside face the reality of the train derailment and we also learned from the experience. Ms. Mayes has shared Riverside s disaster experience with many other hospitals in Illinois, making presentations that help others to be better prepared for disasters. Ms. Mayes also was part of Illinois EMA team, which deployed to Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina in Growth in the new Millenium: A decade into the new millennium, Riverside has continued to grow in physical facilities, expanded clinical programs and service lines, and prestigious awards and recognitions. In 2003, Riverside Pavilion opened on the west side of hospital campus. The building serves as the new entrance to the hospital complex and makes comprehensive services more accessible and more convenient. An adjacent parking garage added 600 parking spaces. Riverside Pavilion opened in November Since 2000, the labor-delivery-recovery area in Obstetrics was renovated to increase the number of Family Birth Suites to five, making plenty of room for the more than 1,400 babies born at Riverside each year. Since 2001, Riverside has provided ambulance services and emergency care for visitors and participants in the Chicago Bears summer football camp, located on the campus of Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois. In June 2003, Riverside broke ground for the Betty Burch Bridgewater Center for Radiation Therapy. Dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Bridgewater, the Center was funded in part by a gift from the Bridgewater family and is part of the Rush-Riverside Cancer Institute, which delivers advanced cancer care and research to those impacted the the

20 by cancer. The Riverside HealthCare Foundation also committed $3.5 million to the construction of the new Cancer Center and the volunteer Auxiliary committed $250,000 for a Cancer Education Center. The Center is a highly advanced facility that brings the latest cancer care technology to this area. Expanded and renovated, the Riverside Emergency Department, a Level II Trauma Center, added new registration and waiting areas. As part of the Emergency Department expansion, Express Care was added as a new service to ensure timely care to those with non life-threatening injuries or sickness. The Total Joint Resources Program, created with Orthopedic Associates of Kankakee, gives patients the advantage of clinical research being performed on leading-edge surgical techniques for knee and hip replacements. Surgical services are combined with high-quality, coordinated post-surgical care that ensures a quick and full recovery. Patients come to Riverside from throughout the State of Illinois, and several other states to access the excellent care provided by our Total Joint program. To strengthen the spiritual side of healing, Riverside created a Spiritual Healing Garden in The Garden is adjacent to the main waiting room on the first floor of the hospital, next to a central waiting area designed to provide family-centered services. The Healing Garden also has an entrance to the hospital s All Faiths Chapel. Holiday and special spiritual services are provided by the pastoral care department, which serves as a training site for pastoral care students. Services are available for employees who work on religious holidays. The pastoral care department has also provided religious services such as weddings for hospitalized patients and families. In 2005, Riverside advances in surgical technology were realized with the purchase and installation of the davinci robot. Our patients benefit from physicianassisted robotic surgery, which eliminates the need for major incisions, reduces trauma to the body, minimizes scarring, shortens recovery times and length of hospital stay, lessens post-operative pain, decreases the risk of infection, reduces blood loss, provides greater surgeon precision and dexterity during complicated procedures. First at Riverside for cardiovascular procedures, the robot is now used for surgical procedures in cardiology, gynecology, and urology. The davinci Surgical Robot In 2006, the hospital opened an eight-bed Girls Specialty Unit dedicated to the care of adolescent girls with severe emotional and psychological problems. The Girls Specialty program, named the Chrysalis program, was one of only two in the state of Illinois to provide inpatient care to adolescent girls with acute psychological disorders. In 2010, our Boys Specialty Unit opened offering a similar program called the Bolder Program. This program is for adolescent boys with severe emotional and psychological problems. Both units are housed in the Mental Health Unit of the hospital

21 In 2005, our President and CEO, Mr. Dennis Millirons, accepted a similar position in a suburban Chicago hospital. From January through September of 2006, our Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), Mr. Phillip M. Kambic, served as our interim executive leader, in accordance with our organizational succession plan. Mr. Kambic had been a Senior Vice President and COO since 1992, having started his Riverside career in 1985 in the Information Technology department. On September 15, 2006, after a nation-wide search, Mr. Kambic was appointed the third President and CEO in Riverside s 42-year history. Mr. Kambic has been a lifelong member of the Kankakee community and has extensive family and friendship ties to the community. Mr. Kambic has a long history at Riverside and a deep understanding of the healthcare needs of Kankakee area community members. He attended elementary, junior high, and high school in areas schools. He currently serves on the Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School Board of Education, as well as numerous other professional and community boards and committees. Mr. Kambic was the Bradley Bourbonnais Chamber of Phillip Kambic, President & CEO Commerce 2006 Business Person of the Year, served as the countywide chairman for the United Way of Kankakee County's 2005 annual campaign, and is a past president of the Kankakee Area YMCA. Mr. Kambic is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and was the 2006 Kankakee Daily Journal Citizen of the Year. Mr. Kambic s vision and concentration on continuing growth led to a decision to embark upon a multi-year expansion and renovation project. A new, 6-story addition east of the existing hospital building will add approximately 216,000 square feet to the hospital. Approximately 40,000 square feet of existing space will be renovated. The new building will house new operating rooms, central sterilizing services, labor-delivery-recovery suites, a dedicated C-section room, an orthopedic-neurosurgical patient care unit, an intensive care unit, corresponding support space, and rooftop heliport. The existing PACU and Outpatient Surgery areas will be renovated. The new building is slated to open in the The ground-breaking ceremony for the new building was held on July 28, 2009, and mimicked the original groundbreaking ceremony in1962, even including an actor who played the part of James G. Schneider, the leader of Riverside s original building efforts in the late 1950s and 1960s.
