3 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in Malawi Section 31a and b of the Nurses and Midwives Act. No 16 0f 1995, states that all nurses and midwives registered with the Council must show evidence of having attended in-service education before renewal.
4 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in Malawi CPD was officially commenced in Areas of focus identified were on knowledge, skills and attitude. It was piloted in twelve institutions Sensitization was done to all stake holders
5 CPD programme (contd) Training of CPD facilitators was done Resource centre was established CPD was officially launched in June 2010 Nurses & Midwives started implementing CPD from July 2010

7 Findings during monitoring and evaluation Nurses and midwives did not fully understand CPD concept CPD facilitators had knowledge gap Inadequate support from nurse managers and other nurse leaders Lack of collaboration from stakeholders
8 ARC PROJECT Meeting in Kenya in March 2011 QUAD members identified challenges of CPD implementation in Malawi. A proposal was submitted Funding was secured
9 Goal & Objectives GOAL To strengthen Continuing Professional Development implementation through collaborative approach Specific objectives were as follows increase the number of trained CPD facilitators.
10 Objectives (contd) intensify CPD sensitization. strengthen monitoring and evaluation of CPD activities. strengthen collaboration on CPD implementation by country team members.

18 Findings during monitoring and evaluation 95 % of CPD of health facilities have trained CPDFs and committee. 99% of facilities visited get management support 75% nurses have acquired their CPD points Facilities have noted positive impact of CPDimproved care, ie patient care documentation, observing of time for duties.
