2 Situation Stroke occurs in the U. S. on average every 40 seconds. The prevalence of hypertension in African Americans in the U.S. is the highest in world. Exceedingly high rates lead to cardiovascular disease, stroke, and death. Death associated with hypertension is 18.3% for general population, 50.0% for African American men and 38.6% for African American women.
3 Response Working together to create greater awareness and access: Identify hypertension Obtain health insurance Get connected to a clinical home Utilize other services available to them to improve quality of life We need to work together to make this happen authentically

5 History Overview Our Other Barbershop Initiatives: Clipper Clinic: bringing health professionals to the barbershops (about once per month for 4 years) Barbershop Conversations with organ donation, among African Americans Clippers n Curls the for Heart Further Equips barbers to share heart health messages daily, and connect clients to resources
6 Why Barbers and Beauticians? Barbers and beauticians are trusted messengers Historically, barbershops were the central hub for health Men especially trust their barber Culturally aware Client chosen
7 What is Clippers n Curls? Mission: Reduce the incidents of heart attack and stroke in the African American population by educating and bridging to care for high blood pressure in the Twin Cities area.
8 Clippers n Curls Goals Screen African Americans blood pressure to help identify potential hypertension Educate African Americans about blood pressure, their screening results, heart disease, stroke and other risk factors. Refer individuals to established organizations and clinics that will continue to monitor and control their blood pressure and support a healthy lifestyle

13 Minneapolis Initiative May Current (data through January) Clients check blood pressure on kiosks in shops 6 Total of 8 participating locations (6-7 active at a time) Average 103 screenings per month at current sites 12,973 total recorded blood pressure screenings 50,000 people impacted indirectly *Funded by the Lillehei Foundation, American Heart Association and the Minnesota Department of Health
