3 Subject 6: Public health Subject code: SYK2060 Tuition language: English/Norwegian Study points: 10 Possible international exchange: Yes Obligatory: Yes Offered as an individual subject: Yes Clinical placement: Yes (60 hours) Prerequisites: Study skills from secondary school Subject description The idea behind this subject is to look at health from a more inclusive perspective with a focus on entire populations and on the conditions which influence health. The aim of the subject is to develop skills in preventative health and health promotion locally, nationally and internationally. Particular attention will be paid to pregnancy, children and adolescents. The subject consists of a four-week clinical placement project with a further study elective. Contents National and international initiatives for health promotion and public health, health and social policy Theories, methods and strategies in national and international health promotion work Knowledge development and research epidemiology Local and volunteer health promotion, networking, international solidarity work, international diaconal work. Migrant health Preventative health and health promotion work in relation to the foetus, children and adolescents Infection prevention vaccination The responsibilities and functions of the nurse in preventative health and health promotion work Learning outcomes The student has knowledge of the key priorities within the field of public health both nationally and internationally/globally The student has knowledge of laws and regulations in relation to public health The student has knowledge of measures on the individual, group and societal levels which promote health and prevent disease The student has knowledge of phenomena related to disease development and preventive health and health promotion measures for the foetus, children and adolescents The student can plan and practice health educational, health promotional and preventive health work The student contributes to the strengthening of positive factors which promote health and quality of life for the individual and within her/his work environment. The student can identify and discuss ethical, diaconal and cultural challenges in the field of public health 2
4 The students can explain key aspects relating to the structures of the different groups of micro-organisms, their capacity to create illness, the body s preventative capabilities and how transmission can be prevented. 6 Evaluation of others project work Content specifications / learning exchange Weeks Learning exchange Learning activities Week Theme 1: Introduction to public health will help you to describe the challenges in health promotion and preventative health work nationally and internationally, with an emphasis on safeguarding the basic needs of children and adolescents gain an understanding of national and international health policy strategies, documentation and guidelines which have been developed to meet the relevant health challenges explain ideologies and health outcomes in public health work identify and evaluate ethical dilemmas in public health work gain insight into central epidemiological indicators and methods for data collection and knowledge development in public health understand different approaches to illness prevention and health promotion work in public health Resource lectures Group work Individual study Discussions IT- activities Week Theme 2: Clinical public health work will help you to: attain an understanding of vaccination as an infection prevention initiative nationally and internationally and the role of the nurse in this work attain a fundamental understanding of the prerequisites for good health, the risk factors and protective factors, including challenges such as mental health, communicable diseases, type 2-diabetes, physical activity and diet understand clinical public health work s different methods and tools, such as behavioral and lifestyle changes, health education and screening understand the role of primary health services directed at children and adolescents in the field of public health work (for example: from health stations and health services in schools) understand the particular challenges affecting the health status of immigrants understand the significance of social networks, volunteer and diaconal work within the public health sector, and be aware of initiatives at the local level Resource lectures Group work Individual study Discussions 5
