2 1. General Information about the Foundation The Matata Children s Hospital Kenya Foundation was established in October 2007 and aims to support Matata Children s Hospital in Oyugis, Western Kenya. Oyugis is located near Lake Victoria in Nyanza Province, one of the poorest regions of Kenya. The Foundation strives for finding financial resources for the hospital in order to provide better medical care for the children and their mothers. The work is done in close cooperation with Dr John Malago, medical director of the Matata Children s Hospital. Mission: Eliminating HIV / AIDS infections in Nyanza Province in Kenya. Objectives: To provide necessary medical and nursing care to the inhabitants of Nyanza Province and the children and their mothers in the Matata Children s Hospital region. To train volunteers in providing information and instruction to the local population in order to prevent HIV / AIDS infections. The strength of the Matata Foundation is: Children from the Matata region Direct assistance to Dr John Malago with medical care for the children and their mothers in the Matata Hospital region; Low overhead: the board members are volunteers and the costs incurred for their own account, such as visits to the Matata Children Hospital; Working with local people creates new jobs; Direct involvement by direct contact with Dr. John Malago, the Kenyan government and the Royal Dutch Embassy in Nairobi; Transparency: detailed information on completed and ongoing projects is available through the website and the publication of annual reports and accounts; Latest news is posted on the Dutch and English language website, so donors can directly see what their financial contribution has been used for Annual Report Matata Children s Hospital Kenya Foundation 2

3 ANBI: The Matata Foundation was awarded the ANBI status (a public welfare institution), and registered with the Tax Administration. Donations to the Matata Foundation allow for tax exemption. Mothers with their babies 2. Achievements and spending of donations received In 2009 the following projects were successfully completed: Construction of the Kimonge Dispensary, thanks to an anonymous donation; Building of the mother-child clinic. This clinic was donated by Mr. Ad Festen; Furnishing of the mother-child clinic. The medical equipment was donated by the Netherlands Red Cross, Haarlem branch; Training of 38 volunteers for the basic health and HIV / AIDS control in the interior of the Nyanza province. This training has been donated by Wereld Nood Hulp; Construction of the Tala Dispensary in Angino, thanks to an anonymous donation. Spending of donations received: 16,000 donated by the Netherlands Red Cross, Haarlem branch to purchase a 4x4 wheel drive car; 2009 Annual Report Matata Children s Hospital Kenya Foundation 3

4 1000 of Mr. Menno Aukes for the purchase of powdered milk for newborn babies of HIV infected mothers; 720 for the purchase of a freezer for the new kitchen; 180 for the purchase of AIDS medicines for HIV infected babies; 900 for an emergency trolley for children, thanks to the Packing vouchers campaign at Albert Heijn supermarket in Malden. Projects started in 2009 and continued in 2010 Bicycle project for volunteers: 17 of the 37 bikes have already been bought through various private donations; 30 child s beds and 20 maternity beds with baby cots: thanks to a donation from Wereld Nood Hulp 15 new mattresses already have been purchased; Matata Paediatrics and Matata Integrated Services Project, a training and extension project for the hospital staff: December 2009, Wereld Nood Hulp made it possible to start with the first phase of this project. 4. Future In 2010 and 2011 the Matata Foundation aims to complete the following projects: purchase of 15 child s beds and 20 maternity beds with baby cots; training of 36 volunteers for the basic health and HIV / AIDS prevention in the interior of the Nyanza Province; purchase of 36 bicycles for volunteers; realization of the VCT project (Voluntary Counselling Testing) for HIV / AIDS in the interior; 2009 Annual Report Matata Children s Hospital Kenya Foundation 4

5 supply of drugs (medicines); construction of the Tala Dispensary staff house in Angino; installation of a solar (electricity from solar energy) in the Tala Dispensary Angino; Provision of baby milk powder for newborns of HIV infected mothers. Foundation Board and Recommendation Committee Foundation Board: December 31, 2009 the Board of the Matata Children s Hospital Kenya Foundation consists of: Jacqueline van Hoorn, president, Hanne Hulshuizen-Verdonk, PR and fund raising, Ad Festen, treasurer. The former treasurer, Mr Basten, resigned from office by August 31. He couldn t combine anymore the increasing work for the Matata Foundation with his daily practice. Mr. Festen joined the board by September 1, and assumed the role of Treasurer. Els Berntsen and Paul van der Zee left the Board for personal reasons, respectively on April 12 and June 1. The Board perceives the resignations as a lack and thanks the former members for their dedication and commitment Annual Report Matata Children s Hospital Kenya Foundation 5

6 The Board met four times. January 5, 2009, the results of the year 2008 and the activities planned for 2009 were discussed. In February and October, the Foundation Board members, the ladies Hulshuizen and Van Hoorn, made a working visit to the Matata Children s Hospital in Oyugis. February 5, they attended a board meeting of the Matata Children s Hospital where both of them were appointed as members of the Hospital Board. During the working visit, Hanne Hulshuizen officially opened the kitchen she donated by unveiling a remembrance plaque in the Matata Hospital. During the October mission, two donors joined the board members. It was their desire to personally visit the Kimonge Dispensary they donated for. The Dispensary offers basic health care to the local community of 30,000 people and is operating seven days a week, twenty-four hours per day. On behalf of the Kenyan Government, Mr. Oyugi took care of the installation of electricity. After the completion of the Kimonge Dispensary, the Kenyan government formally accepted the Dispensary. This means that the salaries of two nurses and the medications are paid by the government. Kimonge Dispensary October 11, a Foundation board meeting was held together with the board of the Hospital Matata. During the working visits, Dr John Malago and his staff were consulted to extensively review and discuss the various projects. The donated funds were found to be spent efficiently and effectively. In the second half of October, Foundation board member Ad Festen visited the Matata Hospital and the dispensaries in the interior: Kimonge, God Ber and Tala. He was acquainted with the staff and comprehensively visited all departments. The financial performance was discussed with Dr John Malago and the auditor of the hospital. Mr. Festen concluded that with the funds provided by the Foundation are very efficiently dealt with Annual Report Matata Children s Hospital Kenya Foundation 6

7 Open air waiting room Recommending Committee: December 31, 2009, the Recommending Committee consists of: Ron Bos, management consultant Lucron Bioproducts B.V. Prof. dr. Ronald de Groot, Professor paediatrics Radboud University Medical Centre Nijmegen Ir. Ane Hoekstra, Board member for PGGM and former Director Rabobank Netherlands Mr. Ed d Hondt, Chairman GGD Nederland and former mayor of Nijmegen Guus van Leeuwen, Director Air Freight Division Kuehne + Nagel Netherlands Hon. Joseph Oyugi Magwanga, Member of Parliament, Kasipul Kabondo Constituency, Republic of Kenya During the year, the members of the Recommending Committee were consulted for various opinions. Through his company Lucron Bioproducts, Mr. Ron Wood arranged twice a large donation of medical supplies, including blood type tests. Mr. Guus van Leeuwen and his colleague Arjan Blankenstein of Kuehne + Nagel took care of two free air cargo transports from Lucron Bioproducts to Matata Hospital. 8 6. Website The Matata Foundation website is administered by Dick Nieuwenhuis. He maintains both the English and the Dutch version of the site. The English language site was launched in September Jan Verhoeven translates the Dutch texts into English. 7. Fund raising and PR Kiwanis Club Nijmegen: January 13, Hanne Hulshuizen-Verdonk held a presentation about the Matata Children s Hospital Kenya Foundation. Press appearances: January 14, an article in the newsletter of primary school De Woordhof in Hummelo about the raised at the school s Christmas market: the money is used for the purchase of thermometers and sphygmomanometers for the Matata Children s Hospital; An article in the issue of the Information Bulletin published by the Netherlands Red Cross, Haarlem branch; March 24, in De Gelderlander, an interview by Jacqueline Bekker with Jacqueline van Hoorn and Hanne Hulshuizen- Verdonk, in connection with their visit to the Matata Children s Hospital; During the packing vouchers campaign at the Albert Heijn supermarket in Malden, Regiodiek had messages on April 9, May 19 and August 4, and the weekly Groesbeeks Weekblad had an article on August 16. The Week of the Last Will April 3, during the Week of the Last Will, the Foundation board wrote to 33 notaries to call attention to legacies in favour of the Matata Foundation. TV Unique in Malden: April 5, an interview with the board members Jacqueline van Hoorn and Hanne Hulshuizen-Verdonk was broadcasted. Fund raising visits and Contacts: August 28 in Nieuw Vennep, with Mr. Guus van Leeuwen, director Airfreight Division, and Arjan Blankenstein, manager Airfreight Export of Kuehne + Nagel Netherlands; August 28 in The Hague, with the Ambassador of Kenya, professor Mrs. Ruthie Rono and her assistant Mrs Khadija I Yusuf; October 16 in Zeist, with Mrs. Erica Waasdorp, CEO of Wereld Nood Hulp Netherlands; 2009 Annual Report Matata Children s Hospital Kenya Foundation 8

9 November 1, with the Dutch ambassador in Nairobi, Mrs. Laetitia van den Assum. November 24, she wrote: "I am impressed with the way your Foundation tries to help Matata Children s Hospital. And I m glad that since your last visit such clear progress has been made. Good health care is and, unfortunately, will be a scarce commodity in Kenya. Private initiatives as yours mean a lot for the communities who benefit from it." As a result of this contact, the Matata Foundation may submit a project for the medical equipment of the new Tala Dispensary. Heijmans Visuele Communicatie: In November, Mr. Cor Heijmans designed for the Matata Foundation: a flyer in English, Dutch and German; a logo; business cards for the Board members; Stationery. Christmas mailing: In December, the board members have sent Christmas letters to their families, friends and other contacts. 8. Contacts with donors The Board keeps contacts with donors. Through these personal contacts, family, friends and acquaintances undertake activities resulting in donations: on the 60th anniversary of Hanne Hulshuizen-Verdonk for the construction of a new kitchen; by two anonymous donors for the purchase of seven bikes for CHW s; On occasion of a 40-years marriage for the purchase of nine bikes for the CHWs. In April, Mr Alex Haxton, CEO of World Emergency Relief England, visited the Matata Hospital. He was impressed by the good management and medical services provided. In December, an anonymous donor guaranteed the baby milk powder project. The Foundation board and Dr. Malago are very grateful to all donors who financially supported the Matata Hospital in 2009 in order to realize so many projects. This allowed large groups of children and adults to receive better medical and nursing care at the Matata Children's Hospital and the Dispensaries in Kimonge and Tala. In addition, gratitude is deserved by all those who have been involved with help in natura or otherwise Annual Report Matata Children s Hospital Kenya Foundation 9

Also, the Matata Foundation is impressed by the expertise and enthusiasm of the staff of the Matata Children s Hospital.
