The HealthStore Foundation A US 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation celebrating its 10 th year Improving Access to Life-Saving Medicines through Micro-Franchising +1 (612)

The HealthStore Foundation s Mission To improve ACCESS to essential drugs, basic healthcare, and prevention services for children and families in the developing world using business models that are scalable, maintain standards, and achieve economies of scale. +1 (612)

The Public Health Crisis Approximately 30,000 children die each day in the developing world because they lack access to medicines that cost less than a cup of coffee A short list of preventable and treatable diseases accounts for approximately 70% of childhood illness and death These needless deaths occur because hundreds of millions of people lack access to high-quality essential drugs, diagnostic and treatment services, or preventative health products Photo courtesy of Scott Davis +1 (612)

Three Criteria for Success To be successful, any large-scale public health intervention must meet 3 criteria: Maintains Standards: so that patients are properly diagnosed and drugs are pure and efficacious, ensuring effective patient treatment Is Scalable: so that there are many locations where patients can access drugs and services, each point of access maintaining consistent standards Achieves Economies of Scale: so that the cost per unit of service rendered decreases as the network grows +1 (612)

The Franchise Solution Maintains Standards Franchise networks maintain consistent standards throughout large numbers of geographically dispersed outlets Is Scalable Franchise networks can scale extraordinarily quickly. e.g. Subway has scaled from 16 to over 27,000 outlets in 86 countries in 33 years Photo courtesy Scott Davis Achieves Economies of Scale Franchise networks achieve economies of scale in advertising, distribution, information systems, risk management, training, and supplies +1 (612)

CFWshops Kenya In 1999, The HealthStore Foundation launched CFWshops, a branded franchise network of health outlets in Kenya. CFWshops Kenya is our pioneering application of the franchise model to distribute essential drugs and basic health services. The CFWshops network has grown to 65 drug shops and primary care clinics owned and operated by Kenyan nurses and health workers in rural Kenya. To date, the CFWshops network has served well over 1 million patients. +1 (612)

CFWshops Kenya The Power to Grow Quickly and Reach Millions CFWSHOPS SUMMARY STATISTICS Year 2004 Year 2005 Clinics and Shops Open Patient Treatments: Malaria 32,714 63,948 Respiratory Infection 45,824 84,980 Worms 17,544 31,944 Diarrheal Disease 16,115 33,244 Bed Nets Sold 2,203 20,475 All Other 71, ,910 Total Patient Treatments 186, ,501 Photo courtesy The HealthStore Foundation +1 (612)

The HealthStore Franchise Method The HealthStore Foundation seeks to eliminate needless suffering and death by adapting the commercial franchise model to establish, improve, and expand health networks that serve the world s poor. Building on the success of CFWshops Kenya, we are now advising others to launch franchise health networks in other countries. +1 (612)
