1 UARY The community came together for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. walk on Monday, January 16, following the breakfast at First Presbyterian Church, hosted by HCTC. The walk promotes unity, and HCTC is glad to be part of this important day, which puts an emphasis on service. Following the walk, smoke detectors were installed in homes as a community service project.

2 WE BELIEVE IN EDUCATION, COMMUNITY, AND YOUR LIFELONG SUCCESS. 2 HCTC, BSCTC, SKCTC AWARDED $3.5 MILLION WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT GRANT HCTC and two other colleges will receive a $3.5 million Appalachian Regional Commission grant to launch a comprehensive, employer-driven workforce development program focused on building the digital economy and strengthening digital innovation and entrepreneurship across a 16-county region in Eastern Kentucky. HCTC will join forces with Big Sandy Community and Technical College in Prestonsburg and Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College in Cumberland in the Eastern Kentucky Coal County Transformation project. The project is in partnership with Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR) and Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program (EKCEP). All will work together to establish educational programs that develop workforce skills in emerging regional career clusters, such as cybersecurity, medical coding, and advanced manufacturing. The program will specially engage dislocated workers from the coal industry through targeted advertisements and will provide adult basic education as needed to ensure that these individuals can participate in the training courses. The project will serve 300 trainees and improve the operations of 30 existing businesses in the first two years of the award and will lay the groundwork for the development of a vibrant and lasting digital economy in the region. Shown here with Dr. Wright (in center) are event organizers Jenny Williams and Elbert Hagans. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. COMMUNITY BREAKFAST The importance of serving others was the message from Dr. Karen P. Wright, guest speaker at the Martin Luther King, Jr. breakfast at First Presbyterian Church in Hazard on the holiday, January 16. HCTC hosted the event, which attracted 100 people. Dr. Wright is the Associate Director of Transitioning for Postsecondary Success at Berea College Partners for Education. President Jennifer Lindon was part of a panel discussion following the breakfast and march at Consolidated Baptist Church. HCTC AWARDED $1.5 MILLION GRANT HCTC is rejoicing with notice of a $1.5 million grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission to be used towards the Intergenerational Training Center at the Lees College Campus in Jackson. The money will be used to furnish and equip the facility. HCTC has plans to construct a 14,700 square foot center for job training and credentialing focused around four emerging regional career clusters: information technology, telemedicine and health sciences, mechatronics, and eco-tourism/small business development. The project will leverage the capacity of the Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program Inc. (EKCEP) and the Kentucky Career Center to promote and market the program to out-of-school youth and displaced and underemployed workers impacted by the decline in the coal industry. The project will serve a seven-county area in the region and will train 295 dislocated workers and credential 228 students over the life of the award. Future site of Intergenerational Training Center, located on the HCTC Lees College Campus.

7 HCTC SUCCESS STORY: CRYSTAL HADDIX Being a flight nurse is a dream come true for Crystal Haddix, and it was made possible by completing the Hazard Community and Technical College Nursing Program at the Lees College Campus in There are so many things that I love about my job as a flight nurse. I go into work every day, never knowing where I will be called to or whom I will be caring for. I could be responding to the scene of an accident or to an ICU to transport an intubated septic patient to a higher level of care. There is an excitement in the unknown. Flight nursing is a very challenging career, but it s also very gratifying. It is different from working in the emergency department or most other nursing specialties because we have a great amount of autonomy, noted Crystal. Getting her start at HCTC was important to Crystal, and she is pleased with the education she received. The quality of education that I received was excellent. I was taught by some of the best nurses and instructors that I know. I owe all my achievements and accomplishments to them. If it was not for the education that they provided me, I would not have been as successful as I am now. I never would have found my dream job. Not only did they teach me how to be a great nurse, but they also taught me how to teach other nurses to succeed, Crystal said. The education she received helps her to be a critical thinker and be able to make decisions quickly. We have a medical director and have protocols that we follow. Because of the nature of our work environment, we may not be able to call the medical director for orders or advice because a decision needs to be made now. You can t wait the two to three minutes it takes to call him up for guidance. It is impossible to write protocols that fit every patient; therefore, you must think outside the box to save someone s life. So, you must make those decisions and be confident. Flight nurses and flight medics must have the skills and critical thinking required to perform autonomously under physical, stressful, environmental, and mental pressure. It s not just about saving your patient s life, but it s also 100 percent about your safety, your crew s safety, and your patient s safety. You have to be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. I love my job because I get to make a difference; I get to save lives, she said. She completed her bachelor s degree in nursing from Jacksonville University in Florida. She is employed by Air Evac Lifeteam, and she is based in Morgan County. Crystal is a native of Breathitt County and has lived there all her life. Want to be the next success story? Call about enrolling today. Crystal Haddix, Flight Nurse HCTC ENJOYING COMMUNITY EVENTS WE BELIEVE IN EDUCATION, COMMUNITY, AND YOUR LIFELONG SUCCESS. Hazard Christmas Parade awarded HCTC first place for their float. Leslie County Adult Education placed first in the Christmas parade in Leslie County. 7

8 PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT: COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING & DESIGN / SURVEYING (CADD) Computer-Aided Drafters are technical specialists with broad-based skills for architectural, civil, mechanical, and manufacturing fields. In this program, the students are taught manual drafting techniques and 2D/3D CADD. Specific skills taught include, but are not limited to, lettering, geometric construction, orthographic projections, dimensioning and tolerance, and related technical processes. These skills are required to transform specifications and instructions of architects, designers, and engineers into complete and precise drawings. The drafter is a skilled technician with a thorough understanding of the graphic language and is an indispensable contributor to the engineering design team. Construction workers use technical drawings and plans that drafters prepare, to build structures such as office buildings and houses. Surveyors depend on drafters to design and update civil maps, such as property survey maps, road construction design, and mining maps. Surveying Technicians can work either in the drafting office or in the field operating equipment on a surveying crew. Students perform routine topographical, boundary and other mapping/surveying projects, as well as Global Positioning System (GPS) surveys. Students establish essential data, keep notes, develop preliminary sketches, and prepare working drawings, profile and section maps, volume calculations, and topographic maps. Students use computer mapping and coordinate geometry software to accomplish these tasks. Students use two- and three-dimensional modeling with conventional methods of graphic communication to solve basic design-related problems. Students will be exposed to both theory and lab projects as they learn to create a variety of drawings. Through the combination of CADD and Surveying courses, students can obtain skills to be employed with a diversity of career opportunities in engineering, architecture, manufacturing, surveying, mining engineering, and land management. For more information about this program, please contact Tony Back, Program Coordinator, by ing tony.back@kctcs.edu or call (606) COMMUNITY KCTCS is an equal educational and employment opportunity institution.
