1 AUGUST 2018 VOLUME 2 ISSUE 15 PARIRENYATWA NEWSLETTER IN THIS ISSUE KIDZCAN DONATES TO PAEDIATRIC WARD QUALITY CUSTOMER SERVICE AT PGH PGH NURSES AND MIDWIVES ANNUAL GRADUATION Produced and published by the public relations department
2 KidzCan and TV Sales and Home officially open donated Family Lounge to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals PAGE 2 The A4 Special Paediatric Family Lounge donated by Kidzcan and TV Sales to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals. Mncedisi Khupe KidzCan Zimbabwe continued their support for children suffering from cancer when it established a family lounge for the A4 Pediatric Ward, which it handed over to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals on the 25 th of July The organization, whose niche is increasing the survival rate of children with cancer, is supporting Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals ward A4, the only pediatric cancer ward in the country. In a bid to comfort children and their parents who will be out of their natural abodes, KidzCan Zimbabwe, partnered with TV Sales and Home and facilitated the establishment of a family lounge for parents whose children are undergoing medical treatment. While providing many of the comforts familiar to those of a home environment, it also alleviates much of the anxiety of being in a hospital environment. TV Sales and Home donated furniture in the lounge and an additional $5 000 to the KidzCan. Speaking at the handover ceremony, KidzCan Board Chairperson, Mr David Mills, said the Family lounge was essential so that parents can meet, discuss and appreciate their children s conditions. The lounge is there for the parents to get together and have more knowledge about the children s conditions and it fills the void of mothers experiencing trauma, he said. The furniture in the lounge will go a long way in providing a rather favourable stay in the hospital. TV Sales and Home Managing Director, Mr Sean Gorringe expressed his organization s delight to have contributed towards this donation. Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals Director of Operations, Mr Edson Mundenda applauded the two partners constant efforts to assist patients with medicines and medical consumables in times of need. A4 Special is one of the hospital s pediatric wards and as such is special in the sense that the parents have to spend much of their time alongside their unwell children in the ward. It is with as much agony that the parents have to be there to see their children through all this suffering. It is a very sad situation indeed. Thanks to KidzCan and TV Sales and Home for bearing with the plight of the mothers who require some form of comfort while waiting for procedures to be done on their children, he said. Mr Mundenda said that as the hospital does its best, as it always does, to ensure the speedy recovery of patients, it feels obliged to warrant at least a comfortable environment for the parents of these minors to spend time with their children. KidzCan is a registered charity organisation in Zimbabwe focused on improving the provision of early diagnosis and effective treatment of cancer in children, as well as contributing to the well-being of children suffering from cancer and other related life-threatening blood disorders. 4 PAGE 4 INDEPENDENT EVALUATION HIGHLIGHTS QUALITY CUS- TOMER SERVICE AT PARIRENYATWA GROUP OF HOSPITALS Vanacio Ben Public watchdog and nongovernmental organisation, Citizens Health Watch produced a report after carrying out a customer service survey at the hospital. The monitoring exercise, which stretched over a month, was patient oriented as findings were largely based on customers responses to questions asked by the Citizens Health Watch team. Patients were generally happy with the services they receive at the hospital, both in the Casualty and the Out Patients Department. Some of the notable findings of the survey were as follows: 1) An average of 74% of the people who responded said that Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals staff attitudes ranged from good to excellent. 2) 77% of those who responded to survey questions felt that they were getting good to excellent services at the hospital. 3) 87% of those who participated in the survey said that communication was good, very good or excellent. 4) 93% of those who participated also acknowledged that the hospital is doing well in terms of health information. The following are some of the recommendations which were made by Citizens Health Watch to the Hospital: 1) The Patients Charter must be displayed in various areas where it will be accessed by the majority of patients. 2) The hospital should have clear signage and directions to guide patients and visitors and avoid chaos in corridors during visiting hour. 3) The hospital must develop an efficient system to inform patients about cancellation of clinics. 4) Staff should improve in terms of serving patients timeously. 5) Patients must be made aware of the various channels they can use to register their complaints. Dear Matron LETTER OF APPRECIATION I have come to give my thanks to you and Sister-In-Charge and the rest of your nursing staff. You are wonderful people. You helped me in all to fight cancer and I have gone for tests and no trace of cancer has been found. The cancer has been reduced from stage 4. May God bless you Mr J. M.
