1 THE WARD PLAN SECTION A: BACKGROUD There are over households, two primary schools. The ward is split into Phase A (informal settlers) and B (original settlers) and it is also home to Epworth Urban Residents Association (EURA) formed in 200 representing all residents of Epworth. 1. WARD 4 TIMELIE Year Event Impact (+/-) 1980 The country gained independence from British colonial settlers An aeroplane flew around the area taking an aerial map of Epworth 1985 Kubatana primary school was built through the effort of parents 1990 Servicing of new stands by the local board 1994 Plan International constructed more blocks at the Kubatana school 1994 Informal settlements mushroomed in the ward The people became free with the war coming to an end. The taking of the aerial map showed the inhabitants that there was no going back on the transformation of the area from a communal area into an urban one. Children in the area could now attend school nearby and acquire knowledge More housing stands made available. More children enrolled as more classes were added Overspill shops were electrified More shops opened and shopping for groceries became easy. 199 Chinamano Primary school was built 199 The first surgery at Overspill shops was opened Illegal settlers occupied the area without board approval More children could attend school nearby Health improved as a doctor was easily accessible though it is expensive 1998 A public toilet at Overspill shopping center was built by local board Sanitation improved but the toilets are closed now and no longer open to the public 2000 Churches were allocated stands More churches built for spiritual and moral guidance 2002 Zimunhu Bar was opened Entertainment brought nearer to the people but also gave rise to cases of prostitution, irresponsible behaviour and violence due to drunkenness Water points were built by the board Clean and safe drinking water provided to the residents

The roads are in better condition and the shops are well stocked though some prices are a bit high. The schools lack adequate furniture and textbooks. 4.
