2 FROM THE DON S DESK Welcome to The holiday period is coming to a close and we hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Christmas and celebration of the New Year. Our renovation schedule is finally about to begin! Plans will be available through our maintenance team. It is all very exciting and a while coming with the usual wait on council approvals and a few hiccoughs along the way. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by closing certain areas off however we must ensure safety and speed of works. It will be well worth it when they are finished. The cafeteria will be a great venue to catch up with family and friends and the new accommodation areas and upgrades of the hairdressing salon, the Recreation areas, public bathrooms and carpark areas will be well worth the wait! News for Jindalee, we would like to introduce Julie Hyles. Julie will be taking over the role of Clinical Nurse Consultant for A,B and G wings. Very sadly for Jindalee, but very exciting for Rosemary Vagi as she prepares for retirement in a couple of months. Rosemary has been such a dedicated and loyal member of staff for some years now..she will be really missed! Welcome to all of our new staff members and residents. Pam Bondfield is helping Leea out in admissions as well as continuing her role as Deputy Director of Nursing for A,B and G wing. Chris Lemon is the Deputy Director of Nursing for C,J,H and F wings. Chris continues in her area of Continuous Improvement and Infection Control. Anju Thakur is the Clinical Nurse Consultant for C,J,H and F wings. All of these senior staff members are available for you to discuss any issues or questions that you may have. I have an open door policy and welcome you to pop in and say hello or organise a meeting with me. The Registered Nurses and Endorsed Enrolled Nurses on the floor are available also. We encourage any problems to be discussed with a senior staff member as they arise, so we can get things sorted! Enjoy the hot weather reprieve! Until the next issue. 3 HEALTH & LEISURE REPORT Kind Regards Health & Leisure Team Richard, Di, Tracey, Odile, Kate, Ella & Gary (Left to Right) Welcome to this, our first edition of Jindajabber for We hope that the festive season was a happy and joy filled one for you. It was great to see so many of the residents, family and friends enjoying the Christmas parties in December. This edition of Jindajabber has many photos of the events, and they really portray the excitement and enjoyment of the parties. During January and February there are many activities planned to keep the residents occupied. In January we will be celebrating Australia Day with a high tea and a slide show. There is also an Indian multicultural day to celebrate the festival of Makar Sankranti with a staff lunch, a Indian style lunch for residents with a slide show and afternoon tea. In February we have a restaurant outing and these are always popular. We will also visit St Andrew s Church for a guided tour. This will be a great opportunity for those who enjoy finding out about the history of Canberra to learn more about this iconic building. Richard, Kate, Gary, Di,Odile,Tracey & Ella Page 3

4 MONTHS IN REVIEW Volunteers Morning Tea On November 30th we held our annual morning tea to thank the many volunteers who are involved visiting Jindalee. We had a wonderful array of food and enjoyed sharing some time together. Thank you to all those who volunteer. Christmas Lights Tour On December 11th and 12th many of our residents were able to go on a tour of the Christmas lights on the south side of Canberra. Richard accompanied them on the tour and surprised residents with visiting the Christmas lights he had on his own house! We have had many positive comments about the tour. Page 4

5 School Visits In the lead up to Christmas we had visits from Canberra Grammar Pre School and The Red Hill School Choir. Both groups did a wonderful job of entertaining the residents and encouraging the residents and family members to be involved by singing along. Thank you to those who work with the children in preparation for these performances as the residents really enjoy seeing the children and their excitement about the upcoming Christmas celebrations. 6 A,B,C & D WING CHRISTMAS PARTY Christmas Parties Christmas Parties were held on the 18th, 19th and 20th December. We had a traditional Christmas lunch and the food was splendid. Our theme this year was a Bush Christmas and the decorations used reflected this theme very well. Santa was able to visit each of the parties and deliver a small gift to each resident. It was wonderful to see so many of the residents able to enjoy these special occasions with their family and friends. Page 6

14 Magic show and dancing to celebrate Chinese New Year On Friday 21st December members to the Chinese community entertained the residents with magic tricks, music and traditional Chinese dancing. This was well attended and lots of fun, especially for those who got to take part in the magic tricks and those who enjoy chocolate. Happy Hour with the Two of Us On Friday 21st December we had the Two of Us for a special Christmas Happy Hour. Happy Hour happens each Friday afternoon at 2pm and is a wonderful way for the residents to relax and enjoy some good entertainment. Page 14

16 NOTICE BOARD MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS Due to the increasing number of external appointments that residents are needing, we ask that a relative or friend please accompany. It is not always possible to take a staff member off the floor. FIRE ALARMS If the fire alarm goes off when you are in the building, don t panic!! Just wait for guidance from senior staff. There is a person in charge on every shift who will know what to do and give instructions. Never put yourself in danger. LAUNDRY Jindalee laundry staff label all new clothing as they arrive to Jindalee. Any new items need to go first to the laundry before 3.00 pm, 7 days a week. Our laundry staff will label them and then redistribute them to the appropriate wings. For all lost clothing items please see the laundry staff for assistance. RESIDENT CARE We strive to provide optimum resident care and to ensure Jindalee is a happy and safe facility. CLOTHING Residents & relatives are encouraged to provide clothing that is suitable for commercial washing machine. All reasonable care will be taken. However Jindalee is unable to take responsibility for damage to clothing that does not comply e.g. woolens. SCRABBLE MORNING Residents & relatives are welcome to join a Scrabble group every Tuesday 10:30am in H wing lounge (TV Room) Page 16

17 HAIRDRESSER We have a hairdresser who attends every Monday & Tuesday. If you would like an appointment please talk to reception or ask a staff member to write in the hairdressers book which is on every wing. TAKING RESIDENTS OUT OF BUILDING If you are taking a resident out of the building it is essential that the staff on the wing are informed. It requires documentation to communicate that someone is away from the facility. BEAUTICIAN SERVICES We have a beautician who provides treatments every Friday. Please ask reception for a list of treatments and prices. ALCOHOL POLICY Relatives are more than welcome to bring in alcohol for their loved ones but it must be handed to a senior member of staff to be stored securely and safely monitored. RELATIVES DETAILS EPOAs/Next of Kin or relevant persons please alert staff if you; change your address, phone number or contact details. We can then update your details. LIBRARY SERVICE We have a mobile library service that delivers & picks up library books to resident s rooms. If you would like this service, please talk to a Health & Leisure staff member. They can sign you up for the service. BUYING SOCKS When buying socks for loved ones please consider buying diabetes friendly or Bonds All Day socks as these reduce the problems of tight bands and pressure from the seams. NEWSPAPERS If you would like a newspaper delivered to your room please talk to reception about which newspaper you would like and it will be organized. RELATIVE & CARERS COMMITTEE The Relative & Carers Committee has been an active group at Jindalee. It provides an avenue for consultation between relatives, carers, community and management. At present there is not a functioning group however if there are people that would like to start one up please make an appointment with the Director of Nursing. KNITTING GROUP Every Tuesday afternoon at 2:00pm in G wing lounge. Come and join our knitting group. All residents & relatives welcome. Page 17

27 PRAISE AND COMPLAINTS BY RESIDENTS OR THEIR RELATIVES At Jindalee Aged Care Residence, we aim to provide the highest quality of care to our residents. To assist us to continually improve our service, we welcome feedback and suggestions for improvement from residents and their relatives. Suggestions are considered by the staff at the Resident s Care Committee Meeting where they are discussed. We investigate all complaints and aim to resolve issues quickly and effectively. Praise and concerns can be informal or formal, and anonymous if that is your desire. Most issues can be dealt with informally. If you have an issue please ask to speak to the person in charge of the wing. The issue may easily be dealt with in a simple conversation. Jindalee has a Praise and Complaint Form that is available, providing a more formal method of offering praise or concern. There is an option of remaining anonymous however it is difficult to give feedback if we do not know who is raising the concern. Once a Praise and Complaint Form has been completed, it can be handed to the nurse, placed in the suggestion box in the foyer or posted to Jindalee. The Director of Nursing (DON) or delegates review all the forms. They investigate the cause of the concern, with a focus on whether Jindalee s Policy and Procedures are contributing factors and takes appropriate action to rectify any issues. Feedback is then available to the complainant (if not anonymous). All completed forms are kept in a folder in the Educator s Office.
