LIVE WORK PLAY A Healthy Commitment 2016 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY Porter Regional Hospital is owned, in part, by physicians.

2016 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY PORTER HEALTH CARE SYSTEM FROM STEVE S DESK From recruiting more physicians to the area to investing in medical technology, Porter Health Care System continues to expand access to quality medical care and improve the health status of our communities. Last year we completed construction of a new full service emergency department in Valparaiso honoring our commitment to continue a strong medical presence in the heart of Valpo. As a result of this renovation, Valparaiso Medical Center now has all the services found at most community hospitals. We expanded our inpatient rehabilitation unit at the Portage Hospital in response to a high demand for that service. We continue to hear your appreciation for our CareEXPRESS urgent care centers and for the 30 minute wait time pledge in our three emergency departments. Photo Credit: Kate Murray Steve Lunn, CEO, in the lobby of Porter Regional Hospital, the newest and most modern hospital facility in Northwest Indiana. In addition, we re making an impact on the economic health of the communities we serve. Our tax dollars help fund civic projects, improve local schools, and enhance new parks and public spaces for families to enjoy. Our commitment to healthcare and the communities we serve contributes to a healthier Northwest Indiana, making it the perfect place to LIVE, WORK, and PLAY. Stephen Lunn, CEO Porter Health Care System LIVE WORK PLAY

HEARTFELT STORIES FROM OUR COMMUNITY A true sense of community comes from living in a place where you know you have support when it s needed most. Hugs, tears, and even laughter as the best medicine, were the cornerstones of two powerful programs hosted by Porter Health Care System aimed at uplifting each other and the community with messages of awareness and support. Also in October, a group of strong parents and Porter associates came together to dedicate a special outside space where families can come to honor infants and babies lost too soon. Together with Our Carriage Infant Loss & Support Group, the hospital created a sitting area and dedicated a tree on the Porter Regional Hospital main campus. Parents gathered for the ceremony and shared deeply personal experiences of losing their children, so that all would know that a strong support system is right here in our community.

WORK LIVE WORK PLAY Working Smart. CAREERS FOCUSED ON GIVING BACK Working in the EMS field is about more than saving lives at least at Porter. In 2016, when Porter EMS crews were not attending to 911 calls across the 522 square miles of Porter County, they were giving back to the community, participating in fundraisers and manning backup ambulances at dozens of community parades and events. Porter EMS donated a decommissioned ambulance to the Porter County Search and Rescue Team, and helped raise thousands of dollars for various charities with the Turkey Bowl flag football game and other events. Speaking of EMS members of our community can obtain a leading-edge education in the Paramedic Sciences thanks to Porter Health Care System s generous donation of $35,000 toward training and equipment at Ivy Tech Community College. The collaboration helps fulfill a direct healthcare need for emergency medical professionals in our community, and helps support the creation of local jobs in the medical field.

In 2016, the hospital achieved a four-star rating from hospitalcompare.gov the quality rating system managed by the Center for Medicare Services. Among those providing such high quality care are 15 new providers recruited in 2016 all with the idea of growing services and improving access to care for our patients. Porter recruited physicians or nurse practitioners in the areas of maternal fetal medicine, neurosurgery, medical oncology, orthopedics, pain management, plastic surgery, primary care, and internal medicine. QUALITY AND GROWTH ARE TOP PRIORITIES Porter Health Care System kept patient convenience and affordable care a priority in 2016 with the launch of two new programs. InQuicker (available at porterhealth.com) allows patients to schedule appointments online and do the waiting at home for Urgent Care, the ER, and Primary Care providers. MDSave (available at mdsave.com), an independent service, can benefit those who pay cash for healthcare or have high-deductible plans with health savings accounts, by offering discounted pricing for a multitude of tests and procedures. In 2016, Porter Health Care System saw more than 276,000 patient visits and admissions to the ER, the hospital, and for outpatient services. About 1,400 babies were born at Porter Regional Hospital, and EMS responded to more than 4,900 calls. As part of the strong fabric of our community, Porter contributed about $4 million in local taxes in 2016, and measured $213,300,000 in total benefit to the community. It s all part of the overall goal to make Your Life. Better. 1 Total Local Taxes Paid: Composed of Property Tax and Sales Tax.
