Demonstrate the anesthetic practices utilizing limited resources while on a medical mission Illustrate the application and preparation processes for going on a medical mission. Overview: We will be discussing the anesthetic techniques that were utilized on this medical mission with the limited resources that were available. Our presentation will include an overview of the preparation for the mission, organization of the operating rooms and perioperative processes implemented. Lastly, we will discuss the application process for attending a medical mission. 6:00pm - 7:00pm What s Happening in Washington DC, an AANA Federal Government Affairs Update Speaker: Ralph Kohl, BS, Senior Director of Federal Government, AANA DC Office 1. To allow attendees to understand what legislative and regulatory activity is happening in Washington DC that could impact the profession of Nurse Anesthesia. Attendees will also learn about the

2 actions they can take to effect change and support the ongoing efforts of the AANA. 2. The lecture will focus on current legislative and regulatory activity on the Federal level and AANAs current efforts to protect and advance the interests of the profession. The lecture will also focus on the importance of being and active and engaged advocate. 7:00pm - 8:00pm Saturday 7:00am 8:00am 8:00am 9:00am Overview: With a new administration and the start of the 115 th Congress, there is a strong commitment to repealing and replacing the affordable care act. There is a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the future of the health care delivery system. This lecture will focus on current activity by Congress and the new administration and how the AANA is working to position CRNAs as a key piece of meaningful reform efforts. The lecture will also focus on other key legislative and regulatory efforts of the AANA DC office and how AANA members can be effective advocates to help drive AANAs priorities on the Federal level. Spulecki, DNAP CRNA Assistant Clinical Professor- University at Buffalo, Nurse Anesthesia Program Objective: 1. At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant should be able to: Define Emotional Intelligence (EI)Understand the characteristics of EI, Identify and evaluate personal EI, Understand the significance of EI within our applicants of the nurse anesthesia program and current graduate nurse anesthesia students Overview: Emotional intelligence (EI) is an important skill for personal and professional success. As we continue to grow within our profession of Nurse Anesthesia, identifying factors associated with strong EI can influence the relationships we have with our colleagues, students, and clients. This presentation will explain the components of EI and how it affects our own practice and those interested in pursuing the profession.

Explain the pending and current legislation in the state and issues that are pertinent to CRNAs in New York 2. Discuss the current House and Senate bills that directly affect New York CRNA practices 3. Identify means by which they can participate in their state association Overview: The purpose of this lecture is to update the membership on NYSANA and AANA activities throughout the year. There will be a review of the current leadership of our association and affiliated supportive staff. There will be an overview of the national convention and then go over the outcome from the spring legislative agenda. The membership will be updated on NYSANA activities.

The intention of this lecture is to describe the power and profound impact the disease of addiction can have on practitioners, as well as reduce the stigma associated with those who have the disease and those who employ Nurse Anesthetists in recovery. Lastly, a first person account of the progression, the symptoms, and the recovery from the disease of addiction will be discussed by a survivor of the disease. Tranexamic Acid Use During Spinal Surgery Associated with Decreased Blood Loss and Blood Transfusions Speaker: Andrea A. Zumpano, SRNA 1. Explore the safety and efficacy of TXA use during spinal surgery. 2. Explore TXA s ability in reducing allogenic blood product administration. 3. Explore safe and effective doses for TXA during spinal surgery. 4. Discuss future research goals in TXA use. Overview: Blood loss during spinal surgery can be significant, thus leading to the requirement of allogenic blood transfusions. These are not without risks for potential harm, therefore researchers have explored options for decreasing surgical blood loss.
