3 FOREWORD Roger and Pauline Britton started Dairy Farming at Enford Farm, Shillingstone in years ago the Crown Estate moved them to Knife Hill Farm, Winterborne Stickland where they continued milking around 100 cows as well as running the arable enterprise on 250 Acres. The herd is now all homebred and in previous years heifers have been sold into many local herds. Originally breeding was from the Avoncroft range but latterly Genus Bulls have been favoured at Knife Hill. Heifers are calved at 2 2 ½ years and produce big, capacious Dorset cows that are very capable of milking from grass. Roger and Pauline are now relinquishing their tenancy and retiring from Knife Hill Farm. This has resulted in the very genuine dispersal of the Dairy Herd together with the Aberdeen Angus Store Cattle, Farm Machinery, Dairy Equipment, Fodder, Maize and effects on this Crown holding. HERD MANAGEMENT The herd is managed on a very commercial basis, milked twice daily through the 10:10 herringbone parlour in which concentrates are fed to yield. The cows are housed in Covered yards in the worst winter months. The cows are managed in high and low yielding groups with the high yielding cows given a concentrate supplement during the summer months. During the winter, grass and maize Silage plus Megalac is fed in feeders. This very simple system has produced the following very impressive NMR averages for August; kgs. 4.17% Butterfat 3.24% Protein SCC=188 CALVING PATTERN The herd calves throughout the year to try and achieve a level profile for the Waitrose contract that the Farm has with the following approximate calving pattern:- June (7) July (4); August (7); September (7); October (5); November (9); December (10); January 2013 (3); February (1); March (3); April (6); May (14); YOUNG COWS There are a large number of young cows in the herd to include:- 20 1st Lactation 32 2nd Lactation 15 3rd Lactation 6 4th Lactation plus 19 5th+ lactation cows keeping their place in the herd on merit at Knife Hill Farm. SIRES and SERVICE SIRES Nominated AI sires have been used at Knife Hill as follows:- Inmilk Cows and Heifers: Barnkamper Support (8); Ganvo Alexander (8); Moet Melody (5); Moet Nansen (4); Overside Dragon (16); Vero Switch (8) etc. Incalf Heifers: Lutz-Brookview Burt (3); Moet Melody (4); Wa-Del Junction (4) Bulling, Yearling & Younger Heifers: Bomaz Patch (5); Emmark Mammoth (2); Overside Dragon (5) A Lot Heifer Calves: Deangate Quentin (3); Kings Ransom Donairo (3); Morningview Legend (1) Service Sires include: Deangate Tarquin (14); Deangate Quentin (16); Aberdeen Angus (20).

4 HERD HEALTH Herd health is very important at Knife Hill Farm, with all breeding stock being BVD vaccinated and tested. Calves born in the last five years have been BVD tested and all have been clear. All Dairy and Beef animals that have gone out to graze have been Lepto vaccinated. The herd is not IBR vaccinated as there is no problem. There has not been a case of Johnes on the holding for the past 15 years and regular milk tests are carried out. A routine fortnightly vet visit is carried out for the herd at Knife Hill. Cepravin and Orbeseal Dry Cow therapies are used. The whole herd was tested clear of TB on Monday 30th July. AUCTIONEERS COMMENTS Having walked around the dairy herd at Knife Hill Farm one could not fail to be impressed by these capacious Dorset dairy cows with superb udders. The cows are very capable of giving considerable milk from forage and the sale is highly recommended with good store cattle, well maintained machinery and fodder making this a very comprehensive dispersal.
