3 Agriculture (Level 1) Certificate in Work-Based Land-Based Operations - Agriculture Awarding body NPTC City & Guilds Level 1 Tuesdays: 9.00am 2.00pm (over 2 years) Core units Unit 101 Maintain the health and safety of self and others in the workplace Unit 102 Principles of transporting supplies of physical resources within the work area Unit 103 Assist with the transport supplies of physical resources within the work area Unit 104 Assist with maintaining structures and surfaces Unit 105 Principles of maintaining structures and surfaces Units Unit 108 Assist with the care of animals Unit 109 Principles of the care of animals Unit 110 Assist with the movement of animals Unit 111 Principles of the movement of animals Unit 112 Principles of dealing with animal accommodation Unit 113 Assisting with animal accommodation The units are achieved by participating in practical tasks at various units on the College farm, which include the Indoor Pig unit and the Dairy and Beef Unit. There is also the opportunity to work with the Shepherd and the College flock as well as participate in Estate Maintenance tasks. Career pathway is continuous. Candidates put together a portfolio of evidence demonstrating how they have achieved the units stated. They achieve the underpinning knowledge through attending theory sessions which are built into the program. Can progress onto Level 2 or 3 qualifications in Agriculture, Animal Management, Game and Wildlife, Forestry or Vet Nursing. There is also the possibility of candidates pursuing an apprenticeship in the Agricultural Industry. Candidates should have the following Personal Protective Clothing for the course: Steel Toe Cap Boots or Wellington Boots, or both Overalls Work gloves Waterproof Coat and leggings Students will be expected to make their way to Sparsholt College (with the school or parent/carer) and as a safeguarding measure they must be collected promptly at 2.00pm.
4 Agriculture (Level 2) Certificate in Work -Based Agriculture (Livestock Production) Awarding body NPTC City & Guilds Level 2 Tuesdays: 9.00am 2.00pm (over 2 years) Core unit: Unit 201 Monitoring and maintaining health and safety Minimum of 18 Credits from the following Units: Unit 202 Maintain and develop personal performance Unit 203 Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others Unit 211 Establish and maintain conditions appropriate to the welfare of livestock Unit 213 Prepare feed & water supplies for livestock Unit 216 Maintain livestock during pregnancy Unit 218 Prepare, establish and maintain livestock in their accommodation Unit 219 Prepare outdoor sites for the introduction of livestock Unit 234 Load and unload physical resources within the work area Unit 235 Transport physical resource within the work area Unit 239 Repair and maintain structures and surfaces Unit 241 Establish animals in a new environment The units are achieved by participating in practical tasks on the college farm at the Dairy and the Indoor Pig Unit. There is also the possibility of candidates pursuing an apprenticeship in the Agricultural Industry.

6 Animal Management (Level 1) Diploma in Animal Care Awarding body NPTC City & Guilds Level 1 Tuesdays: pm (over 2 years) This qualification meets the needs of students who may wish to work within the animal care industry. Students develop a core understanding of animal care including animal health, animal husbandry, animal accommodation, animal feeding and health and safety in the workplace. Students will have a chance to undertake many practical aspects of animal care such as handling and participate in classroom-based theory. Students will be assessed through projects and assignments, practical and portfolio work and short tests and reports, which are internally marked and moderated and annually verified by our EV. Unit 101 is assessed through a single multiple choice test, which is online and covers the knowledge and understanding of that unit. It is not assessed through assignments. Career pathway On completion of this qualification, students may progress to the City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care. For health and safety reasons students will require: Safety boots or Wellington boots (steel toe caps not needed for Wellington boots) Green boiler suit/overalls (Sparsholt logo optional). Allow for layers underneath in cold weather when selecting a size. Dark coloured trousers for warm areas (not jeans) Bottle green (Sparsholt logo) polo shirt for warm areas (These items can be purchased from Creative Images uk.com/sparsholtcollege.html) Students will be expected to make their way to Sparsholt College (with the school or parent/carer) and as a safeguarding measure they must be collected promptly at 2.00pm.
7 Animal Management (Level 2) Diploma in Animal Care Awarding body NPTC City and Guilds Level 2 Tuesdays: 9.00am 4.00pm (over 2 years) This qualification meets the needs of students who may wish to work within the animal care industry. Students develop underpinning knowledge whilst practicing skills that could be used within employment in the animal care industry. covers a range of topics including: Animal health and welfare Animal feeding Animal accommodation Animal breeding and grooming Animal behaviour Students will be assessed through assignments and practical assessments which are internally marked and moderated initially internally and then annually externally by our EV. Students who pass the course will achieve a pass, merit or distinction. This is equivalent to 4 GCSEs grade A* - C (depending on grade achieved). 9 Fishery Management Certificate in Fishery Management Awarding body Open Awards Level 1 Tuesdays: 9.00am 2.00pm (over 2 years) This qualification provides an introduction to students who have an interest in the fishery industry. Students develop underpinning knowledge whilst practicing skills that could be used to support further study in fishery management. covers a range of topics including: Handling and feeding fish The science of water and fish Sport fishery management Teamwork, health and safety and equipment in the fishery industry Preparation for progression Students will be assessed through portfolios and assignments which are internally marked and moderated. A selection of work will be moderated externally. On successful completion of the course students will achieve a pass grade. This is equivalent to 2 GCSEs at grade D. Career pathway On completion of the qualification students may progress onto the following qualifications, (subject to satisfactory English and Maths results and reference): City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Fishery Management Alternative Land-based Level 2 Diploma at Sparsholt College Students will require: Wellington boots Waterproof clothing for outdoors work Students will be expected to make their own way to Sparsholt College and as a safeguarding measure they must be collected promptly at 2.00pm.
10 Horticulture Diploma in Horticulture Awarding body NPTC City and Guilds Level 1 Tuesdays: 9.00am pm (over 2 years) This qualification meets the needs of students who may wish to work within horticulture. Students develop underpinning knowledge whilst practicing skills that could be used within employment in the industry. covers a range of topics including: Growing from seeds Growing plants and crops Plant care Plant pest and diseases Maintaining grass Career pathway Students will be assessed through portfolios and assignments which are internally marked and moderated initially internally and then annually externally by our EV. On completion of these qualifications students may progress to the following City & Guilds NPTC qualifications: NPTC Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture For health and safety reasons students will require: Personal protective equipment for Horticulture available from Creative Images This includes: Approved trousers Outdoor clothing Gloves Safety boots and safety wellingtons Water proofs are required in case of practical sessions completed outside all year around Students will be expected to make their way to Sparsholt College (with the school or parent/carer) and as a safeguarding measure they must be collected promptly at 2.00pm.
11 Engineering An Introduction to Engineering Awarding body ABC Certificate in Fabrication and Welding Practice Level 1 Tuesdays: 9.00am 2.00pm (over 2 years) This course leads to a Level 1 qualification in Engineering and Technology. is designed for those who want to gain a basic introduction to Engineering. consists of 4 units as detailed below. Health and Safety: This mandatory unit is intended to ensure that you understand the basics you will need to know, to work in engineering. Working safely Communicating effectively Using hand tools Handling materials and components Problem Solving Engineering Materials: This unit gives you the knowledge and skills to cut and form a number of engineering materials. Investigate cutting, forming and assembling processes Prepare, cut, form and assemble items Check cutting, forming and assembling operations are carried out correctly Manual Metal Arc Welding: This unit gives you an introduction to joining materials used in engineering. These include welding, brazing, soldering and use of adhesives. Investigate different joining processes Prepare for joining materials Join materials Check completed joints Fabrication and Sheet Metal: This unit introduces you to the different methods used to cut, bend and assemble a wide variety of plumbing components. Prepare materials for cutting and bending Carry out cutting, bending and joining Check that wok has been completed correctly
12 Engineering Career pathway This course provides an excellent foundation to progress to a number of different areas within engineering. Full time courses are available EAL Certificate in Welding and Technology, Level 1. NVQs via the apprenticeship programmes run in conjunction with industry. A keen interest in the subject area is essential! Due to the nature of this course a high level of Health and Safety factors are involved, so you must behave in a mature and responsible manner in order to achieve good results, gain the qualification and progress within the college. Safety Clothing required: You will need a pair of Steel Toe Cap Boots. (any supplier) You will also need to purchase a pair of Overalls from the College, ensuring all students are dressed the same. Students will be expected to make their way to Sparsholt College (with the school or parent/carer) and as a safeguarding measure they must be collected promptly at 2.00pm. **This course runs alongside Entry 3 Motor Vehicle
13 Motor Vehicle This course leads to the qualification ABC Certificate in Motor Vehicle Studies. The course is designed for those who want to gain a basic introduction to the Motor Vehicle. Awarding body Entry 3 ABC Certificate in Motor Vehicle Studies Tuesdays: 9.00am 2.00pm (over 2 years) offers a very practical theme and will be assessed through multi choice question papers and workshop assessments. Successful completion of the course allows progression to our Level 1 full time course. consists of 6 units as listed below and all units need to be passed to be successful. Health and Safety: This mandatory unit covers all aspects of H&S in the workshop, also looking at Employer and Employee requirements. Introduction to Engineering Equipment and Materials : This unit covers different materials and their properties. It also covers how to select and correctly use hand and power tools. Introduction to Steering and Suspension: This unit covers the basic layout of Steering and Suspension systems. Looking at the basic maintenance and following the safety precautions. Introduction to Vehicle Braking Systems: This unit covers the basic layout of Braking systems. Looking at the basic maintenance and following the safety precautions. Introduction to Vehicle Inspections: This unit covers different types of vehicle inspections and how to carry out each to a specification. It also looks at the reasons for using and completing service records. Introduction to Vehicle Valeting: This unit covers the application of correct materials when valeting the exterior, interior and the engine bay of a motor vehicle. It also covers the correct handling and disposal of waste. Career pathway This course can lead to a full time Level 1 Course in Motor Vehicle at the College or an Apprenticeship.
