2 Vision and purpose Our vision and purpose remain unchanged. ENEP exists to promote, exchange experience and share knowledge between environmental & energy professionals across Europe. Through its Member Associations, ENEP listens and connects with its environmental & energy professionals to enable them to contribute to an environmental agenda that is driven throughout Europe by sound evidence and objective science. ENEP seeks to engage in European and international issues and debates to build collectively on the strengths of its Member associations. ENEP is uniquely placed to promote and co-ordinate the many and varied aspects of environmental & energy professionalism and prides itself on its ability to maintain the strength and separate identities of its member associations in European countries. ENEP believes that environmental professionalism is one of the essential prerequisites for achieving sustainability and through a professional platform and online networking tools seeks to build a professional community that harnesses the shared objectives of knowledge sharing, and strengthens the collective voice of our member associations by raising their visibility with policy makers on a European and International level. As a respected and dynamic contributor with access to expert input, ENEP provides the EU institutions with access to environmental expertise on key issues.

3 Introduction ENEP is an association of environmental experts from all over Europe, which was founded in recognition of the increasingly important and diverse role environmental professionals now play in our societies. The protection of the environment is no longer an issue of secondary importance, with the impacts of climate change, pollution and ecosystem degradation penetrating all areas of life. In response to the growing awareness of society to environmental issues, the contributions of environmental professionals have been steadily growing over recent decades and have become an undeniable necessity. 3

4 Introduction There are few other problems that demonstrate the need for international co-operation as clearly as the protection of the environment. National efforts to tackle, for example, river conservation or air pollution will be in vain if our European neighbours do not strive for the same goals. Environmental processes do not reflect political boundaries, and pollution respects no borders - environmental management is a synonym for international cooperation. Environmental professionals work in industry, Government, environmental services, teaching, research and NGOs, and in most countries, they have founded local or national associations that provide platforms for exchanging professional information. ENEP aims to link these associations to raise the visibility and the influence of environmental professionals at the European level. In response to this challenge, ENEP was founded and is now providing a platform for an international exchange of knowledge and experience from all environmental disciplines. As Europe and the world face political and environmental challenges of a magnitude greater than ever before, maintaining European and international co-operation is vital. ENEP s role to inspire and facilitate environmental professionals to continue collaboration, exchange knowledge and learning, and build new mutually beneficial links and relationships. It does this by giving value to our members, and seeking to innovate and explore new opportunities. By promoting the importance of professionalism and scientific evidence on the European and national levels. This document explains our strategy and outlines how we aim to tackle these challenges in the years ahead.

9 Case study 1 Engaging with the EU institutions on the Circular Economy at Green Week 2016 During Green Week this year, ENEP hosted a high-level side event bringing together environmental professionals with representatives from the EU institutions and the public and private sectors in Brussels in June EU proposals and policies were examined by a panel of experts and environmental professionals underlined the efforts that they are making in the public, private and non-governmental sectors to innovate and create secondary markets from waste stream materials 9

10 Case study 2 Thematic Task Force position paper presented to the REFIT on nature directives December 2015 AIM 2 In December 2015 ENEP s Thematic Task Force (TTF) for the REFIT of the Nature Directives put forward its case to the European Commission that the professional competences of those involved in the implementation of the Directives is vital. The TTF argued that mutually recognised qualifications and competences would improve standards of interpretation and application. It suggested that capacity to designate protected areas remains limited in many Member States, and that we need to build up professional standards in these areas through formal education as well as the sharing of knowledge and skills between environmental professionals in different Member States. The TTF called for greater sharing of experience on implementation. Linking up professionals from more established Member States with their colleagues in those who have more recently

11 AIM 3 To contribute collectively to EU environmental policy development joined the EU is an effective means of improving future implementation. The TTF also recommended that to ensure the continual improvement of knowledge, skills and competences, development of a Europe-wide competency framework mutually recognised under the professional qualifications directive would be a significant step forwards. This position paper also highlighted that without EU nature legislation there would be a complex picture of national mechanisms and disjointed approaches that would have left species and habitats in danger and provided potential distortions for the Single Market. This TTF fed its views into the Commission s REFIT consultation exercise, which has recently concluded that the Directives are fit for purpose, and future action should concentrate on improving implementation. added value 11

12 Case study 3 Championing the case of energy efficiency and renewables professionals at European Sustainable Energy Week 2016

13 European Sustainable Energy Week 2016 saw a partnership between FEDEC, the Dutch Association of energy efficiency professionals, energy professionals from other ENEP member associations and business partners take a stand at this year s EUSEW Networking Village. Attended by over 2100 participants, with over Tweets potentially reaching 18 million accounts, ENEP enjoyed considerable profile as part of this year s networking village with over page-views. EUSEW brings together public authorities, private companies, NGOs and consumers to promote initiatives to save energy and move towards renewables for clean, secure and efficient power. It allows participants are setting out with new ideas, connections and motivation to build Europe s sustainable energy future and empower energy consumers. The ENEP TTF on energy efficiency stand titled Driving energy efficiency through accredited skills in the Europe Union facilitated networking between visitors and ENEP representatives. The Networking Village was a high-profile networking opportunity and contributed in 2016 to building the profile of ENEP and the participating Member Associations. Visitors to the ENEP stand included the European Commission representatives, EASME (the European Agency for research, SME and environment funding programmes), private sector representatives including Toyota and Bouygues as well as project promoters of new and existing projects. added value 13

15 Case study 4 Raising the visibility of the European environmental professional with the EU Institutions ENEP continues to actively engage the European Union institutions and in particular the European Commission and its executive agencies tasked with environmental policy consultation, taking the initiative on proposed new or updated legislation, policy and funding opportunities. EU associations have the collective influence to engage the EU institutions through events, consultations and bilateral meetings. Through these channels we seek to raise the profile of the environmental professional and make the case for the important skills and standards that form the bedrock for effective implementation of EU laws. 16 Join ENEP now! What is ENEP? ENEP is a network of national federations of environment and energy professionals throughout Europe. Who can join ENEP? Any national level body whose objectives comply with the statutes and bylaws of ENEP can apply to join ENEP. How much does it cost to join? As a non-profit body ENEP charges a minimal membership fee that equates to 1.25 euros per member. In addition, minimum ( 250) and maximum ( 7500) membership fees exist to ensure ENEP membership represents value for money to both national associations and their individual members. What services can we benefit from? Monthly Newsflashes ENEP members all receive a monthly newsflash detailing important developments from Brussels in environmental and energy policy, with a focus on the interests concerning our membership base: compliance, risk management and emerging legislation. Useful for monitoring specific changes in the EU political landscape and horizon scanning for useful topics, ENEP newsflashes are a valuable tool for national associations and their members. Access to experts, partnerships & EU funding opportunities ENEP members will have exclusive access to frequently updated lists: for EU conferences, calls for experts, partner searches and EU funding deadlines. ENEP meticulously searches on a daily basis for opportunities for its members. Opportunity to create, lead and participate in Thematic Task Forces Recently several Thematic Task Forces have been initiated by ENEP members covering key topical themes such as the REFIT in nature directives and energy efficiency. The concept of the ENEP TTF is to create an environment for members to share knowledge,

17 publish research papers and engage in consultations at the EU level. Creating new Thematic Task Forces couldn t be simpler. Planned topics to address in 2017 include water, the circular economy and the Sustainable Development Goals. Bulletin - Latest news from our network (GA, side events, member conferences & workshops) Members will have access to the latest updates on our work in Brussels and throughout Europe. The ENEP EXCO (Executive Committee), made up of members and paid staff operate under transparent rules and publish their key activities in the Bulletin that is published at least three times a years. All General Assembly minutes are also available to members on our website. Each ENEP Bulletin also features a range of articles and discussion pieces on a topical theme in our Space for debate section. There are considerable opportunities for members to contribute to this publication. Access to a member shared calendar of events and initiatives Advertise your events and call for experts and participants via a shared online calendar. Latest news from ENEP on the social networks Please feel free to monitor and follow us on the social networks, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, where we draw your attention to the latest news in Brussels and from our associations throughout Europe. Access to the Expert platform to advertise individual profiles and access expertise The ENEP Platform is intended to provide a knowledge base and an information interchange tool between Environmental Professionals, Public Institutions and Private Organizations searching for personnel and expertise. Environmental Professionals can upload their profile, expertise, publications and projects on the ENEP Platform and be found by other professionals, organisations or Public Bodies who are interested in their expertise. The visibility level of all information can be personalised in order to have full privacy control. Organisations in the environmental sector can use the ENEP Platform to recruit personnel or to search the expertise they need for a particular task.
