If you have an UP with Science golf shirt, wear that. Guidelines for UP with Science learners On Saturday, 5 June 2010 you have to decide who from your group will present your research findings at the Gauteng Regional Expo. Only 2 participants are allowed per project. You will have a last opportunity to meet with your research leader and then it is up to you to restructure your project for the Expo. You may not enter an "UP with Science" project under your own school's name. Registration deadline is 30 July Fees (R70 per learner) will be paid out of the UP with SCIENCE fund; should you however not turn up at the Expo, you will have to refund the money. 2 Complete the Project Information Guide with the assistance of your research leader. The following guideline has been provided by the Expo committee: Guide to writing abstracts This guide gives short guidelines for writing abstracts, under the headings specified below. The Abstract section on the form is intended as an extremely brief summary of the project. The headings of the information guide are: Abstract (± 50 words) When writing the abstract, o o Keep to the word count! Use key words when writing the sections that are most relevant to your project. Remember that this is only a summary, and writing entire sections is impossible. Purpose of research (± 50 words) Try to answer the answer the following questions: o Why was the research done/what problem are you trying to solve? o Why should others care about the research or the results? o What is the scope of the work? (how much of the problem are you trying to solve?) Important things to include in this section would be the importance of your research (and the target group) and the impact it could potentially have. Procedures (± 50 words) How did you go about solving the problem/conducting the research? The following points may be considered to answer the above question: o Was simulation or analytical models used? o Did you construct a prototype to test you theories? o Did you collect sample data to test theories? o What variables did you measure, and why? o What assumptions did you make in the process? Data (± 50 words) This section should give a brief overview (summary) of the data that you collected during your procedures. o In the case of sample data/surveys, give a summary of your findings (numbers). Guidelines for the Regional Expo Gauteng North Page 2 of 8
3 o If simulations or analytical models were used, give some of the outputs of these models. o If measurements were taken, report on the results in a summarized manner. Conclusion (± 50 words) Answer the question posed by your problem statement (purpose of research), in terms of the following: o Did you manage to find an answer to a research question? o Were your theories proved or disproved? Provide a short explanation why. o What are the implications of your findings? o Is there room for improvement? References (± 25 words) o List the most important references used in your research (2-4), using the following general format (including italics/bold/etc): Author/s Initials and Surname. Date. Title of book/article, Edition/Volume, Location: Publisher name, Year, pp. Example R. Oppliger Security Technologies for the World Wide Web, 2nd Ed Norwood, MA: Artech House, 2001, pp Fortunate Nkhwashu, Bonze medal, 2009 Guidelines for the Regional Expo Gauteng North Page 3 of 8

The adjudicators operate independently from the Expo Committee and are autonomous in their judgement. 9. The decision of the judges is final and no discussion or correspondence will be entered into concerning the Expo results. In addition, the National Expo Council prescribes quotas for participation in the National Expo for Young Scientists by which the Northern Gauteng Expo Committee is bound. Your understanding and cooperation is appreciated. 10. Problems regarding the evaluation of you project may however be submitted on the prescribed form at the help desk. No complaints will be accepted after that. 11. The judge s report cards will be handed out on Saturday morning. 12. If there is more than one participant at a project, you may take turns on Saturday after 10:00 to visit other projects. If you are alone you may not leave your project for long periods of time. 13. After closure at 12:30, participants must remove their projects and help clearing up the area. Remove your boards and take your tables to the indicated area. 14. Winners of cash prizes will receive cheques; these have to be collected at the end of the meeting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lenné Marnewick and Kearabetswe Mataboge, Gold medal, 2006 Guidelines for the Regional Expo Gauteng North Page 5 of 8
