Alumni Office Room 1W9 Isaac B. Honor - Internship Coordinator bths.internship@gmail.com INTERNSHIP NOTICE #4 PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY!! The application portal for the Navy's Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) for High School students opened this past Wednesday and the link is here: SEAP is an eight week summer program wherein high school students work in a Navy Lab on actual research alongside Navy scientists and engineers. The stipend for the first year is $3300 and for returning years is $3800. As expected it is quite the competitive process. Once a student has graduated from high school they are encouraged to apply for the Navy Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP - as well as the SMART scholarship program ( The main challenge with the SEAP program is location. Most students who participate in the program live relatively near to the labs where they intern. As you can see in the attached map, the closest Naval activities to NYC are Groton, CT (2 hr drive), Newport, RI (3 hr drive), and Philadelphia, PA, (2ish hr drive) so it would be a challenge to get them there. However, if a student had relatives in the area of a lab or a parent/guardian willing to stay with them for the duration of the internship (tough, I know) that would work. This internship opportunity will only work if you have relatives in Groton, Connecticut, Newport, Rhode Island or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These are the closest research labs to New York. There is also a Participating Labs list for the rest of the country. If you are serious about this internship opportunity and have relatives that you can stay with, complete the application and then me and I will check further with my contact person. Again, you must have relatives in the area that you can stay with in order to be considered for participation in this internship program. Application Deadline The application will close on October 23, 2015 at 5:30 pm Eastern Standard Time (EST). Important Note: If you are selected for the internship, please inform Mr. Honor IMMEDIATELY via at: bths.internship@gmail.com
About SEAP Program Details Participating Labs Contacts FAQ Apply Online About SEAP The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) provides an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer. The goals of SEAP are to encourage participating students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further their education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to make them aware of DoN research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DoN. SEAP provided competitive research internships to over 265 high school students this year. Participating students spend eight weeks during the summer doing research at 25 DoN laboratories. The SEAP Online Application opens on September 15, 2015! American Society for Engineering Education Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) 1818 N St NW, Suite 600, Washington, DC Contact the SEAP Team
About SEAP Program Details Participating Labs Contacts FAQ Apply Online Program Details: The apprentice program is designed to encourage students to pursue science and engineering careers; acquaint qualified high school students with the activities of Department of Navy (DoN) laboratories through summer science and engineering research experiences; to provide students with opportunities in and exposure to scientific and engineering practice and personnel not available in their school environment; to expose those students to DoN research and engineering activities and goals in a way that encourages a positive image and supportive attitude toward our defense community; and to prepare these students to serve as positive role models for their peers by encouraging other high school students to take more science and math courses. SEAP places academically talented high school students with interest and ability in science and mathematics as apprentices in DoN laboratories for eight weeks during the summer. These students work with scientists and engineers who act as mentors. The program offers students a unique and positive experience in their fields of interest, thus encouraging them to pursue careers in science and engineering. Eligibility Requirements High school students who have completed at least Grade 9. A graduating senior is eligible to apply Must be 16 years of age for most laboratories. Some laboratories may accept a 15 year old applicant. Please check individual lab description for more details. Applicants must be US citizens and participation by Permanent Resident Aliens is limited. Please check individual lab descriptions for participation of Permanent Resident Aliens. Dual citizens may be accepted at some labs, but not all. Interested students should contact the individual labs to determine if dual citizens may apply.
Award Duration and Stipend Participating students spend 8 weeks during the summer doing research. Program dates are fixed and cannot be changed. Students are expected to participate 8 continuous weeks. No vacation time is allowed during these eight weeks. It is strongly recommended to apply to laboratories that are close to your residence. No travel/relocation allowance will be provided. The stipend amount for new students will be $3,300 for the 8 weeks. Returning students will receive $3,800 for the 8 weeks. Payments will be distributed bi-weekly by the lab coordinator in the form of a paper check. 7 About SEAP Program Details Participating Labs Contacts FAQ Apply Online Frequently Asked Questions Application Deadline The application will close on October 23, 2015 at 5:30 pm Eastern Standard Time (EST). Eligibility Who do I contact if I have a question? Contact the SEAP Help Desk at or the SEAP Team at seap@asee.org I am a permanent resident of the U.S. but have not been granted citizenship yet. Am I eligible? You need to be a US citizen to apply to this program. Some labs may consider Permanent Resident Aliens. It is best to contact the appropriate Navy labs to find out their requirements. Terms of appointment Is housing provided? No, acquiring housing for the duration of the program is the responsibility of the student. Navy host personnel and lab coordinators may be able to assist you in finding suitable housing and should be contacted directly with inquiries. What are the stipend levels?
Stipends are set to $3,300 for 8 weeks for new participants and $3,800 for returning participants. Stipends will be paid in two installments: one check will be distributed in the middle of the internship and the second at the end of the internship. Are the dates of the internship negotiable? No, the dates are fixed and cannot be changed. If selected, you must complete the full eight weeks. Application process When are applications due? Applications are due on October 23, 2015 at 5:30 pm Eastern Standard Time (EST). What happens after I submit my application? After your application is received it is submitted to the Navy laboratory that you selected on your application. The lab research staff reviews the application and makes a decision based on your academic background, research interests, personal statement and recommendation. How do I apply? Through the online application provided at How many labs may I apply to? You may apply to a maximum of 2 labs. It is strongly recommended to apply to laboratories that are close to your residence as no travel/relocation allowance will be provided. How important are my transcripts to my application? Your transcripts are an extremely important part of your application. For this reason, the transcript process has been updated for this application cycle to be easier and more efficient for applicants! When applying, simply make sure you have an unofficial/official copy of a transcript from your school and upload it in PDF format. Once uploaded, be sure to select the link on the education section of the application that allows you to view what you have uploaded. Once you have viewed it, you can then self-verify the transcript you've uploaded. It is extremely important to verify what you have uploaded because transcripts will not be verified by the SEAP Program Team; it is solely the responsibility of the applicant. DO NOT MAIL OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS TO ASEE HEADQUARTERS AS PART OF YOUR APPLICATION. When an award is issued, the applicant will be notified of the process to submit an official transcript at that time only. How important is my contact information? Please make sure the name entered on your application matches the name indicated on the transcript. If you are selected to participate in the program, we will use the address provided on the application for all tax documents that will need to be sent. NOTE: Make sure you input the correct address when you initally open your application. If you make a typo, the incorrect address will be the address needed to re-enter the application. Your correct will then not gain you access into your already opened application.
How will my reference submit their recommendation? While completing your application you will be asked for your reference address. Once the Reference section of your application is complete your reference will receive an explaining the procedure for submitting recommendations to ASEE. NOTE: These s are automatically generated s and some schools label them as spam and block them from ever reaching the teacher/advisor's mailbox. It is important that applicants follow up with their reference to insure that this is received. Letters of Recommendation are only accepted through uploading them into our system by the reference provider. Who can I choose as my reference? The reference should be a teacher or any person who can attest to your scientific and engineering skills and knowledge. If you want to list someone else as your reference, that is allowed. How do I find the research areas of the laboratories? Click on the participating labs link at the program website. Each lab has a description of their research areas. How do I know if my transcript and/or references have been received? You can sign into your application and on the left hand side, right under the "Logout" button, there is "Status" button. Clicking the "Status" button gives you the status of every part of your application. Included on the "Status" page is whether your transcript has been processed and whether your reference letters have been successfully uploaded by your reference providers. What is ASEE's policy on taxation of my stipend award? ASEE must report all stipend, internship support, health insurance and book allowance payments made to Recruitment Participants under the Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program. At year end, ASEE will provide participants and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) with the informational Form 1099-MISC recording the amount paid to the participant during the tax year. ASEE does not withhold taxes from participant payments. Under current laws and regulations, participants are responsible for submitting quarterly estimates of income taxes to the IRS and paying the amounts due. Participants may have a similar liability with respect to state and/or local taxes depending upon the state and/or locality where the participant resides. You are considered an independent contractor, and not self-employed, and are not employed by either the United States Government or ASEE. If you have further tax questions, please contact the IRS, as ASEE is prohibited from giving tax advice.
