1 #39 th Legislative District Democratic Organization Greetings, The 39 th Legislative District Democrat Organization is pleased to announce the renewal of Eleanor Roosevelt Memorial Scholarship Fund. This academic year, , is the seventh year we will award a $ scholarship to one student who resides in the 39 th legislative district. Our goal, as always, is to keep this an annual event and further our commitment to education. The following pages list the requirements for eligibility and the application package. The last page should answer most questions about the scholarship and the requirements. You will notice that the application process is very simple and that there are no forms to fill out. This is intentional as the student s creativity and ability to think for themselves, not the ability to fill out forms, is most important to our process. However, we do require the applicant do some work and demonstrate a likelihood of success. It is extremely important that applicants be reminded to check their home address against the county information for legislative district. The fact the school might be in the 39 th legislative district does not mean their home lies within the boundaries. If the home address is outside the boundaries of the 39 th legislative district, the application will not be considered for review. If no suitable applicant is found, the scholarship funds will not be awarded and will roll over to another year. This is neither a need based nor academic scholarship. Therefore, we do not require any evidence of financial need nor do we require submission of the school transcript. Please distribute this to any eligible students that might have interest. 2 Requirements for the Eleanor Roosevelt Memorial Scholarship Any student who applies must meet the following basic requirements in order to be considered. The student must be: A resident of the 39th LD. See number 2 of 11 Things to Know to avoid having your application being denied Graduating (or the equivalent) in the year in which the scholarship is given (ex. this year, 2017 graduates) Considering a public service (or related) course of study Planning to attend a Washington State institute of higher learning (two year, four year, tech etc.) Have public service experience See number 9 of 11 Things to Know to avoid your submission from being denied The application package will include: Name Address (verify that your home address is within the boundaries of the 39 th legislative district using county elections data for your county) Your Contact Information School attending currently Higher Learning institution(s) considering (or accepted to) Two letters of recommendation (prefer at least one be from either a teacher or high school advisor) An essay discussing your ideas of public service, how your career choice fits and any community/public service experience An essay about Eleanor Roosevelt (Note on essays: Please limit each essay to no more than 1000 words.)

Deadline for application is March 31, If you choose to mail the application, it must arrive in the mailbox no later than the due date. The same applies to electronic submission. Any applications received after the March 31 deadline will not be considered for review.

4 11 things you should know about the Eleanor Roosevelt Memorial (ERM) Scholarship 1. Do I have to be a member of the Democratic Party to apply? No. The 39 th LD Democrats believe education is an underpinning of our nation and is essential to its continued success. The ERM scholarship was created to help ease the financial burden of higher education for those students interested in pursuing a public service career regardless of any particular political affiliations or lack thereof. 2. How do I know if I m in the 39 th legislative district? If you reside in Snohomish County visit: In Skagit County call the Elections office at (360) or use the link below: If you reside in King County visit: 3. What is a public service occupation? That is where creativity comes in. Some occupations are obvious public service. For example teaching school or entering the health care professions. Others, like business management might not meet the criteria if your goal is working for a major bank. If you can make a compelling argument as to why your particular chosen field should be considered public service then apply. For example, you are interested in a degree in finance but your goal is to work with low income communities, you have met the criteria for public service. 4. Do I have to plan to attend a four-year University or College? No. Any institute of higher learning in Washington State will do. If you plan to attend a community college, a tech school, etc. you are also eligible. 5. When will the scholarship be awarded? The selection committee will make a determination by mid-may at the latest. 6. Is this only open to public school students? No. All students who will be considered a member of the Class of 2017, whether they attend private schools, are home schooled or are in alternative schools, are eligible. 7. What is the public service requirement? In this instance, public service is synonymous with community service. Give examples of what you have done to help your community. 8. Regarding the essays -Is there anything specific I should be focusing on? No. This is where your creativity and communication skills come into play. We leave the direction of the essays up to you. The key to being successful with the essay is to make a compelling statement. Remember to keep the essay within 1000 words.

5 9. If I use resources like a book or movie or TV show, or something I find on the Internet to write my essays, do I have to give credit to the source? Absolutely. To use the work of someone else and not give credit is plagiarism. Plagiarism has become common and a serious issue of theft worldwide. Institutions of higher learning are routinely using plagiarism software to identify when students are not giving credit to their sources. There are many formats (ways) to give credit. Each high school English department has selected the style for use in the school and the scholarship committee reviewers are familiar with the wide variety of styles. You are to use the citation/reference style you learned in your school. If you are unsure of how to correctly use the citation/reference style, the review committee strongly recommends that you seek out someone in the school s English department to help you with this part of the writing process. Any applications that fail to give credit to outside sources will not be considered for the award. Furthermore, the high school will be notified of the plagiarism as will the institution of higher learning to which you have applied. 10. Will there be an interview? Yes. The selection committee will interview the top applicants prior to final selection. 11. How many scholarships will be awarded? We will award one Eleanor Roosevelt Memorial Scholarship.
