2 Without the Food Bank, we would not have had food when my mom lost her job. My mom got disabled and the money my dad made went to making sure we had a warm place to sleep. When the rent, bills, and car were paid, he was left with just about nothing. The Food Bank saved me and my family. We know how much you mean to the community. Anna, Middle School Student Dear Friends of the Food Bank, Each year we ask our community to help us provide millions of meals to our hungry neighbors, and each year you do not disappoint. But when our year ends and we ve distributed 70 million pounds of food, hunger is still at our doorstep. While your donations go a long way, hunger is here year-round. It s here at the end of January when seniors must decide between heat or food. It s here in February when school is canceled due to snow and kids miss out on their two school meals. It s here in March and April when children are on spring break that could be almost 10 days without regular meals. We ask ourselves each year whether we can sustain distributing this amount of food, when, in fact, it s not enough. Because of this, we have begun building solutions to help people move out of food insecurity and reduce reliance on emergency food. Our Community Health & Engagement Department is teaming with local health providers to ensure our neighbors receive healthy food to address such medical issues as high cholesterol and diabetes. We believe this will decrease healthcare costs and missed time at work or school. You can read about this and other efforts being led by this department on page 4. We are ever so grateful for your support year after year, but I must ask you to help the Food Bank continue to nourish our hungry neighbors. Hunger does not take vacations and it does not discriminate. Hunger is never convenient, and few can be totally prepared when it rears its head. 3 Community Health & Engagement Department Builds Solutions In late 2016, the Food Bank launched the new Community Health & Engagement Department that focuses on access to nutritious food for those in food-insecure situations through education, a structured nutrition policy, and targeted food resourcing. Unfortunately, in many cases, our neighbors with limited access to food must turn to items that tend to be highly processed, and high in salt, sugar, and fat, which have a negative effect on their health. Our new department aims to end that cycle. Community Health & Engagement looks to build programs that help our clients become less reliant on our network of emergency pantries and services and build resources that will enable them to become more self-reliant and food secure. The department will develop initiatives with a direct, positive impact on those we serve; these could include strategic partnerships with healthcare providers, state and local government programs, and more. With a full-time Nutrition Education Manager on staff, the Food Bank is now able to teach community partners to help nourish our neighbors with healthy recipes and cooking classes. Not only do we host tastings and classes in our Allscripts Teaching Kitchen, but we also use mobile cooking kits to travel and teach throughout our 34-county service area. We used green space at our Raleigh Branch to launch the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC and BASF Community & Demonstration Garden. We plan to serve eight to 11 families with fresh produce as well as use the gardens to educate the community about growing healthy food. Community Health & Engagement is leading the way on building solutions to reduce food insecurity. The Food Bank will continue to develop and support initiatives to ensure no one goes hungry in central and eastern North Carolina. Food Bank Nourishes Neighbors Affected by Hurricane Matthew The damaging flood waters Hurricane Matthew brought in October 2016 devastated much of our service area and beyond. Families struggled to return to some type of normalcy. They faced damaged or destroyed homes, lost jobs, and income, and too many struggled to access food. Thanks to the support of our amazing community, the Food Bank was able to act with urgency after Hurricane Matthew, ultimately distributing nearly 4 million pounds of food and hygiene items to 28 of our 34 counties. We continue to monitor communities that are still rebuilding and waiting for relief funds, some with a timeline of up to five years. The Food Bank will be there as long as we are needed. Fortunately, the Food Bank is at the heart of a community that continues to rally around our friends and nourish our neighbors in need. The survivors are all still recovering from Hurricane Matthew. Many are still awaiting rebuilds and elevation. That s the unfortunate reality when you are dealing with federal funding. Some have a waiting list of two to three years. Meanwhile, families either live in their home even though it is unsafe, are renting something temporarily, or are residing with family/friends. 5 Our Community Helps Us Nourish Neighbors & Build Solutions Biogen Foundation Food Lion Feeds NetApp Wells Fargo The Biogen Foundation is committed to supporting organizations in the areas where we live and work that provide basic social needs for children. This is why we are proud to support the Food Bank s Kid s Cafe, School Pantry, and Weekend Power Pack programs that directly impact more than 800 students in Wake and Durham counties. Without programs like these, children in need would be less able to focus on their education and success in the classroom. Chris Barr, Executive Director The Biogen Foundation continues to support the Food Bank, this year increasing its giving to not only support our kids programming but also participation in the ABC11 Together Food Drive. This donation makes it possible to provide more than 400,000 meals to those facing food insecurity. Credit Suisse Americas Foundation At Credit Suisse we believe in the power of coupling financial support with the skills of our employees in order to strengthen the capacity of nonprofit organizations so they can better deliver on their missions. Our relationship with the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina embodies this approach. Together with hundreds of employees who volunteer annually and one who brings his expertise to their board, we are proud to have partnered with the Food Bank for over a decade to aid those who are hungry. Eric Eckholdt, Executive Director Credit Suisse employees volunteer regularly with the Food Bank, dedicating more than 1,000 hours of service in 2017, inspecting and sorting food donations that provide thousands of meals for our neighbors in need. In addition, the Credit Suisse Americas Foundation demonstrates its commitment to hunger relief with generous grants for core mission support. Through our Food Lion Feeds hunger relief initiative, Food Lion is proud to work with the Food Bank and its partner agencies. We re committed to ensuring that none of our neighbors in the towns and cities we serve have to choose between dinner and rent. Hunger should not be a choice, so we appreciate the work the Food Bank does each and every day to serve families in need. Through volunteerism and program support, our leadership and employees are passionate about making sure none of our neighbors go hungry. Investing in the Food Bank is investing in the health of our communities. In addition, the company is a lead supporter of many of our annual initiatives, including Stop Summer Hunger, Sort-A-Rama, #FoodBank24, ABC11 Together Food Drive, and Kids Meals & More. Publix Super Market Charities At Publix Charities, we believe every family deserves to have hope, love, and joy. Our Foundation is dedicated to giving these gifts of nourishment and hope to our communities. We are proud to partner with the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina in these endeavors. Last year, Publix awarded the Food Bank a grant to purchase a new truck and support its move to the Hunger Solution Center. In 2017, Publix has provided generous support to the Food Bank s children s nutrition programming as well as employee volunteers. At Wells Fargo, we are committed to strengthening our communities by assisting those who may not have access to food and other basic necessities. We are proud to help feed thousands of individuals and families across North Carolina by supporting the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina in their efforts to make a difference and increase the quality of life for our local residents.
