2 What is the Alaska Craftsman Home Program? Founded in 1987 Incorporated as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit in 1989 First program of its kind in the United States Modeled after Canadian R-2000 program Formed with assistance from: State of Alaska Office of Energy Programs University of Alaska Cooperative Extension Service Alaska State Home Builders Association Energy Rated Homes of Alaska Since its beginnings, ACHP has and continues to provide education in energy-efficient building technology throughout the State of Alaska.

3 What is our Mission? The Alaska Craftsman Home Program, Inc. is an educational building industry alliance that promotes energy efficient housing that is cost effective, healthy, and durable.

8 How do These Groups Integrate? AHFC: Better Housing Stock ASHBA Housing that meets Alaska building conditions & increased builder professionalism. AAR: Ability to identify and differentiate energy efficient housing (Label). AMBA: Housing stock that people can afford to heat. AHA: Indigenous people of AK be able to continue to live in their villages. U of A: Expand educational outreach AlI: Ability to recognize value in energy efficient components.

11 Success in New Construction 95% of all new homes built in AK today have an energy rating at or above the minimum standard Builders must take the Cold Climate Home Building course prior to General Contractor licensing (Residential Endorsement). Average air tightness improved dramatically Appraisers recognize increased values for 4+, 5 and 5+ homes Realtors market new homes based on Star rating

State Study Conducted on Residential Energy consumption for existing building stock per year from /2008: Energy Cost Annually $ Carbon Dioxide Produced 42,899 lbs. 14 What did the state come to realize? Directing education solely at manufactures, suppliers, and contractors solely is ineffective. What s good for the supplier and contractor is not necessarily good for the consumer. Change in construction industry best practices will change if the end consumer, who pays that monthly utility bill, demands it. Empowering the homeowner with knowledge of energy efficient design and applications WILL affect the industry to move toward more energy efficient housing. Much of this work will need to be done in existing building stock.

28 MORE ABOUT ACHP ACHP is the first program of its kind in the United States. It was formed with the assistance of the State of Alaska Office of Energy Programs, in conjunction with the University of Alaska Co-operative Extension service, Energy Rated Homes of Alaska, and the Alaska State Home Builders Association. ACHP was formed in 1987 following patterns set by the Canadian R-2000 program, and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Since its beginnings, ACHP has and continues to provide education in energy-efficient building technology throughout the State of Alaska. All ACHP workshops, publications, and projects are designed specifically for Northern regions. These regions have very diverse climatic zones with extreme temperatures, as well as precipitation, soil, and cultural differences. All of these factors must be taken into consideration when de-signing to meet the demands of every zone.
