4 What is AASHTO? The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials is a nonprofit association founded in 1914 Members include: Highway and transportation departments of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico 35 Associate Members from Federal, State, and Local agencies and other countries Covers five modes: Highways, Air, Transit, Rail, and Water Role of AASHTO - AASHTO is a forum for good road practices, a technical standards-setting d tti organization, and a policy making organization

5 American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Vision -The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials is the voice for transportation and catalyst for organizational and technical excellence. Mission -The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials advocates transportation-relatedrelated policies and provides technical services to support states in their efforts to efficiently and safely move people and goods. Goals and Objectives Goal 1. Re-establish transportation as a national priority. Goal 2. Advocate and communicate to achieve AASHTO's goals. Goal 3. Provide world class technical services. Goal 4. Assist State DOTs with leadership and performance.

6 AASHTO Committees Much of AASHTO's work is done by committees comprised of member department personnel who serve voluntarily. The Association provides a forum for consideration of transportation issues and is frequently called upon by Congress to conduct surveys, provide data, and testify on transportation legislation. Throughh AASHTO's policy development activities, iti member departments often address federal programs and provide guidance.

53 Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Congress authorized the program in 2005 to investigate the underlying causes of highway crashes and congestion in a short-term program of focused research., SHRP 2 targets goals in four interrelated dfocus areas: Safety: Significantly improve highway safety by understanding driving behavior in a study of unprecedented scale. Renewal: Develop design and construction methods that cause minimal disruption and produce long-lived facilities to renew the aging highway infrastructure. Reliability: Reduce congestion and improve travel time reliability through incident management, response, and mitigation. Capacity: Integrate mobility, economic, environmental, and community needs into the planning and design of new transportation capacity.
