CIPS Branch Conference CIPS Update David Noble, CEO Chartered Status Knowledge Update Membership Transformation Brand MCIPS Branch / Congress Working Group Update Personal Communications Update Adopt a School, Case Study, Getting Involved How the profession is building and succeeding in Scotland Mini Negotiation Challenge Workshop
CIPS Update The profession still has a way to go Change in title to Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply Individuals who become chartered will be able to describe themselves as MCIPS or FCIPS Chartered Procurement & Supply Professional Corporate activity is by far the largest growth area followed by Professional Development, then Membership and finally, Other The UK is projected to be much smaller going forward as EMEA, Africa and the Asia Pacific areas grow CIPS membership has out grown others in the last 10 years There are between 2.5 & 3 million Procurement & Supply Chain professionals in the world however CIPS members are only a small percentage of this. In the UK, CIPS have approx. 30% of the market. No other bodies have this however it s still not good enough It is recognised that CIPS represents the profession, but it is not professionalised. Need to get to a licencing position if we are to be taken seriously
Professional Licence This is a very important ongoing debate It will be discussed at December s Board meeting and taken to Congress in March 2015 CIPS is being invited into regulatory discussions including the UN and the White House CIPS could become the go to body for global P&S activities Recent conversations include business leaders responsibilities for declaring and managing malpractice in the supply chain (slavery) The professional licence will be complimented with an annual ethics test and evidence of annual Continuous Professional Development (CPD) There is a register on the CIPS website enabling employers to check authenticity of claims to be professional (MCIPS, FCIPS). Anyone using the letters without being on the register is committing fraud
Sustainability Index The CIPS Sustainability Index is live on the website - it is the only independent, verified measurement tool available, allowing suppliers to prove their sustainability credentials and buyers to obtain essential sustainability information in a more efficient way than via individual and lengthy questionnaires
Profession of Choice Be a Buyer Campaign check the website for details P&S Apprenticeships Foundation Academies There is a CIPS project looking at refining the supply chain boundaries defining the future profession to ensure that roles and responsibilities are better understood e.g. the value that P&S professionals can bring. This could be expanded to include contributions in Business strategy Complex acquisitions Enterprise development Supply Chain financing Outsourcing/In-sourcing MCIPS evidences a licence to practice a standard of education. There is the need to prove that the profession is up to date / relevant
Chartered Status To be a Chartered Procurement & Supply Professional, there will be some common principles for the three routes to entry: MCIPS or FCIPS Up to date certificate in Ethical Procurement Completion of a VIVA style interview Demonstration of knowledge and capability against the Global Standard (competency framework that sets the benchmark for what good looks like in procurement and supply at all levels and across all sectors) The three routes to becoming chartered are as follows: Academic post graduate qualification Experiential operating at a senior level Applied learning including corporate organisation award and CIPS Master Practitioner Need to register 30 CPD hours per annum Applications open in January 2015
Knowledge Update The Knowledge part of the CIPS web pages have been refreshed and now include a Procurement Cycle model enabling users to hover over each aspect and gather further intelligence together with access to useful tools & techniques Knowledge partnerships - as part of CIPS new Knowledge Strategy, CIPS are committed to delivering the latest expertise, experience, knowledge and resources to support members. To enhance this programme, CIPS are partnering with leading organisations to bring industry and category specific content, information, resources and tools to further support members with managing specific category spend: De Poel temporary labour Mintec commodity & raw material intelligence Hays career development Total buying energy These agreements are effective for 3 years CIPS is looking for support on requirements for relevant soft skills, category specific elements, case studies and blog entries
Membership Transformation There is a 5 year strategy with 6 themes to address this. There are approx. 110k members to date There has been a drop in membership Focus on the what is the brand understanding the value trusted, responsible, guaranteed, sign of quality, unique MCIPS = Professional ethical buyer Global recognised mark A standard of working practice A guarantee of ethical buying A trust builder A qualified professional Amnesty action: Back to basics article Sept 2014 Re-join campaign to lapsed members Re-launch professional register Date membership certificates available to download once renewed Membership development activity is focused on addressing the following: The value of Procurement in organisations Limited knowledge of CIPS outside the profession Confusion over the MCIPS award Misunderstanding of governance around the use of the MCIPS post-nominal
Brand MCIPS All attendees were asked to take part in addressing the following: Understand the positioning and perceptions of MCIPS How do we improve it? What does it involve? What changes do CIPS need to make to enhance the perceptions and understanding of MCIPS? How can Congress and Branches play an active role in promoting Brand MCIPS? All feedback is to be consolidated and made available to Branches & Congress for them to act upon
Personal Communications Update Contact with members is through CIPS and not direct This has caused frustration as Branches and Congress wish to communicate with members and CIPS are resource strapped in this A working group has investigated the options and piloted a tool A one pager is to be provided as to what can be done with it
Profession of Choice Part 2 This section focussed on the Be a Buyer campaign and Adopt a School Schools are keen to partner with organisations to tap into commercial skills How the Profession is building and succeeding in Scotland Focus on how to grow talent, support youth unemployment and raise the profile of procurement Opportunity for CIPS members to engage with tertiary providers with offers to be visiting professors or to offer business mentoring
Negotiation Event Birmingham Branch presented a case study to demonstrate how they engage students and young professionals with a Negotiation Game The Branch then led a (very competitive) Negotiation Planning activity between seven groups of delegates, focused on a case study of a typical sourcing activity for new print machines (MFD) Points were awarded based on identifying the judges twelve key points (and additional half-marks for any other points) The suggestion was that this would provide a useful means of engaging young professionals and students, at local FE Colleges and Sixth Form Colleges in the Procurement & Supply activity Activity requires mentors and judges to support
President s Visit CIPS President Babs Omotowa, Managing Director and CEO of Nigeria LNG Quest to get Procurement and Supply the profile it deserves The Profession has come of age: raise your game, raise your voice Would like to visit as many branches as possible in his presidential year (to )
