02 03 Caring for our community As a good corporate citizen, DUBAL strives continually to be a role model for care and responsibility within the community by actively supporting initiatives and projects that promote the social and economic growth of Dubai, to the benefit of everyone living in the Emirate. Preference is given to activities that endorse the broader goals of the Dubai government and to causes that will benefit most through DUBAL s involvement. Four main areas of activity are emphasised economic, social, environment and workplace, supplemented by corporate sponsorship of sporting, trade and other events. As in previous years, our support for the community during 2010 embraced diverse causes, from non-governmental organizations; through conferences, exhibitions and industry meetings; to sporting events; education; and children in general. In total, we invested Dhs 20,069,911 directly in corporate social responsibility initiatives. Through the DUBAL CSR Club, our employees have continued to extend the reach of our social investment by engaging with the community either directly or through non-governmental organizations; simultaneously strengthening DUBAL s reputation as a caring organization. Abdulla J M Kalban President & CEO: DUBAL Our approach to Corporate Social Responsibility The formal DUBAL Corporate Social Responsibility ( CSR ) policy and strategy, developed and implemented in 2009, reflects our company s positioning as a responsible business entity that is committed to sustainable development to the benefit of all our stakeholders. Fundamental to this is our CSR Mission, which is to consolidate DUBAL s corporate social investment through a strong focus on capacity-building, social innovation, long-term partnerships, and employee engagement in community development initiatives. At corporate level, we give preference to initiatives that strengthen DUBAL s relationships with our stakeholder communities while also making a positive contribution to our business. Four major focus areas have been defined: Economic: We support the economy through direct and indirect financial contributions, with associated benefits for the community. Social: We aim to improve living conditions and create oppertuities for underprivileged and disadvantaged members of society. Environment: We strive to preserve precious natural resources and act responsibly so as to protect the environment. Workplace: We encourage individual development and diversity amongst employees. We encourage our employees to be socially responsible and proactively support socially responsible behaviour. At employee level, the DUBAL CSR Club (founded in 2009) enhances our company s involvement in social, environmental and community services programmes. Through the DUBAL CSR Club, we encourage a culture of giving through volunteering by giving employees opportunities to touch and change people s lives. By engaging with the community, DUBAL CSR Club members are also able to demonstrate their individual support for DUBAL s corporate approach to community relations, share their ideas, and serve the community through initiatives that benefit worthy causes, thereby making our society a better place.employees are also encouraged to participate in, or support community projects, whether individually or in groups, outside of the DUBAL CSR Club s scope.

05 CSR Projects Initiatives with Economic Impact In terms of the DUBAL CSR Policy, we select projects that: Make a positive financial contribution to our society; Offer economic opportunities to engage our community partners; Educate the community about the fundamentals of economic sustainability; and/or Involve our employees as main participants or volunteers. Direct and indirect economic contributions DUBAL is wholly owned by the government of Dubai and since our inception in 1979, has been the UAE s industrial flagship. Each year the company contributes approximately 5 per cent of non-oil revenue (28 per cent of the manufacturing sector). DUBAL also contributes to the local economy indirectly through the inevitable ripple effects created by employment (by way of disposable income and individual career growth) and purchasing of goods and services from local suppliers. Disaster relief donation In a clear demonstration of the caring culture nurtured at DUBAL, our employees responded to the call by H H Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan (President of the UAE) to support the millions of flood victims in Pakistan by collectively donating Dhs 120,000 to relief efforts. A cheque to this amount was presented to representatives of UAE Red Crescent, from where the money was forwarded to those in need. Educational visits DUBAL hosted over 50 successful visits to our site this year, the major proportion being from local schools and universities. Delegations from three prestigious universities from abroad also visited DUBAL, namely: HULT International Business School A group of 17 MBA students from HULT visited DUBAL on 29 June 2010 with the aim of obtaining input for the practitioner component of their curriculum. In particular, the students wished to see the theory they ve learnt about branding being demonstrated in practice by a reputable organization. Formerly known as the Arthur D. Little School of Business, HULT has a long history of excellence in education and is currently ranked 39th in the world and 21st in the USA by The Economist. IMD Lausanne DUBAL was included in the itinerary of a study trip undertaken by 26 particpants in the Accelerated Program for Executive Development of IMD Lausanne (one of the leading management schools in Europe and the world). The group, comprising executives from 17 different companies and nationalities, visited our Jebel Ali site on 13 April The agenda included a tour of our smelter; discussions with senior management; a formal presentation by Abdulla Kalban (President & CEO:DUBAL), followed by a question and answer session; and lunch. The visit was an integral compnent of a course entitled Global Immersion Experience United Arab Emirates: Culture and Business, which aims to provide participants with a rich understanding of comparative business practices and culture in a world region of great significance to global commerce. In addition, many engineers visited DUBAL out of interest to know more about the aluminium industry. Also, as part of a partnership with the UAE Ministry of Health, approximatly 100 nursing students enrolled at Nursing Institute facilities located in Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Sharjah spent time at the DUBAL Medical Centre to learn about our Occupational Health and Hygiene Management System and practice practices.

06 07 Initiatives with Social Impact In terms of the DUBAL CSR Policy, we select projects that: The Ta awon Programme was officially launched in March Relate to socio-economic development such as those that improve the quality of life for disempowered people (orphanages, special needs, elderly, and so forth); Encourage young people to adopt better quality of life standards; Exchange knowledge and education (technical, technology, industrial health and safety); Encourage sports development at team level (not individuals); and/or Encourage voluntary work by our employees that can be extended to include their families. A cheque to the value of Dhs 120,000 was presented to Red Crescent for disaster relief efforts in Pakistan. Ta awon Programme Following a successful pilot phase, DUBAL implemented an educational project in partnership with UAE University ( UAEU ). The initiative known as the Ta awon Programme ( Ta awon is Arabic for co-operation ) contributes actively to developing the UAE s National human resources by enhancing the employability of UAE Nationals and thereby contributing to the country s socio-economic development. DUBAL provides support to students enrolled in engineering colleges, with respect to their graduation projects by providing valuable industrial exposure. The students, in turn, invent solutions for real-life industrial applications, ideally providing cost-effective solutions for upgrading DUBAL s existing process requirements. University lectures Highly educated, knowledgeable and well-skilled employees from DUBAL regularly provide intellectual support to UAE-based universities and specialty forums by delivering lectures on technical or business management topics. In 2010, the forums addressed included a seminar hosted jointly by IEEE Women In Engineering ( WIE ) UAE Section and United Arab Emirates University ( UAEU ) in Al Ain; and an Internal Best Practice Forum organised by Dubai Municipality. (Total investment: Dhs 300,000) Dubai International Racing Carnival As part of our strategy to support major sporting events in the Emirate, DUBAL was a sponsor of the annual Dubai International Racing Carnival. The event, considered the world's richest horse racing carnival, again featured more than 200 of the finest racehorses from 17 countries representing some 100 international trainers. The 2009/2010 horse racing season took place for the first time at the new Meydan Racecourse. (Total investment: Dhs 2,500,000) Jet Ski Racing The annual UAE National Jet Ski season, which ran from early- January to mid-may 2010, saw the DUBAL-sponsored team win five of the six race meetings (two heats per meeting), thereby also taking the overall 2009/2010 National Championship title. DUBAL has supported the team since (Total investment: Dhs 500,000)

18 19 Trade events Conferences DUBAL representatives attended several international aluminium and related conferences during which our company was allocated dedicated slots to deliver technical presentations. Trade events Exhibitions Our Corporate Relations & International Affairs department, together with our Marketing & Sales department, participated in three international aluminium exhibitions during Arabal 2010, held in Luxor, Egypt. TMS 2010, held in Seattle, USA. The DUBAL team at Aluminium 2010 (Essen). 14th International Aluminium Conference and Exhibition 2010 (Luxor, Egypt) ARABAL 2010, held from 1 to 3 November 2010, provided a forum to promote DUBAL s DX Reduction Cell Technology. A technical presentation was delivered to the audience of industry experts, and was well received. DUBAL also had a small display stand, where attention was focused on the development of and benefits offered by DX Reduction Cell Technology. Senior technical personnel from DUBAL manned the stand, to field questions from delegates and other visitors to the exhibition. CRU S 15th World Aluminium Conference (Oslo, Norway) 15th World Aluminium Conference DX Reduction Cell Technology received acclaim among international industry experts during the Commodity Research Unit s 15th World Aluminium Conference, whichtook place from 21 to 23 June In addition to a technical paper on the technology and its performance attributes, DUBAL also sponsored luncheon on the second day of the event. 3rd Aluminium Market Trends & Outlook Conference (Chicago, USA) Brand awareness of DUBAL was raised in North and Latin America through our partner-sponsorship of the 3rd Annual Aluminium Market Trends & Outlook Conference, hosted by Harbor Intelligence from 21 to 23 June Attended by about 160 delegates representing a broad cross-section of the aluminium sector, the event provided a sound opportunity to promote DUBAL as a leading player in the rapidly emerging aluminium hub in the Middle East. Metal Bulletin 25TH International Aluminium Conference (Manama, Bahrain) Held from 20 to 22 September 2010, the annual Metal Bulletin International event provided another strong platform to deliver a presentation on DUBAL s DX Reduction Cell Technology. TMS Annual Meeting and Exhibition (Seattle, USA) DUBAL leveraged the industry platform offered by the TMS Annual Meeting and Exhibition, held from 14 to 19 February 2010, to promote its latest technological achievements. Two technological presentations were delivered by DUBAL representatives: one on the role of DUBAL s DX Reduction Cell Technology in the ramp-up of Emirates Aluminium Company Limited ( EMAL ); the other on an innovative cell pre-heat process that permits accelerated start-up. In addition, DUBAL had a small exhibition booth at TMS 2010, the theme of which was the company s progress through technological innovations, specifically the specific benefits offered by DX Reduction Cell Technology. Aluminium China 2010 (Shanghai, China) The UAE s growing primary aluminium sector was promoted in Asian markets via the ALUMINIUM China 2010 exhibition, which took place from 9 to 11 June. The DUBAL stand served to promote our manufacturing facilities and product portfolio to delegates, participants and other visitors to the exhibition. Advantage was taken of the opportunity to promote DUBAL s DX Reduction Cell Technology; as well as our new web-based customer portal that will bring a wide range of services within easy reach of customers and also enhance DUBAL s communications with these vital stakeholders. Aluminium 2010 (Messe Essen, Germany) Customer awareness in Europe of the UAE s growing primary aluminium sector was boosted by the joint participation DUBAL and EMAL at the biennial World Trade Fair and Conference ( ALUMINIUM 2010 ), which took place mid-september. In addition to a combined exhibition stand that promoted both companies individual facilities and their combined product portfolio, a representative our Marketing & Sales department delivered a presentation during the coincident conference. 8th Metef International Aluminium Exhibition (Brescia, Italy) DUBAL and EMAL effectively entrenched market awareness of the UAE s growing primary aluminium sector in Europe by participating together at the biennial Metef International Aluminium Exhibition, which took place from 14 to 7 April The combined exhibition stand focused on the two companies individual facilities and joint product portfolio, specifically the increased volume of metal coming on-stream in 2010 and DUBAL also took advantage of the opportunity to promote our DX Reduction Cell Technology and our new web-based customer portal.

20 1 CSR Networking DUBAL participates regularly in Majlis Al CSR a networking group that meets every two months with the aim of helping its members to enhance their respective organization s CSR programme through sharing best practice. The members, who currently include Dubai Chamber of Commerce, DLA Piper, Knowledge and Higher Development Authority, Al Futtaim Carrillion, Microsoft, Nakheel and others, host the meetings on a rotational basis. DUBAL hosted the Majlis Al CSR on 25 April 2010, the agenda including presentations on DUBAL s CSR Policy and social activities as well as EHS, Waste Management and HR practices within our company.
