3 4-H Team Update Greetings, 4-H Families! As we approach a mid-point in our 4-H year, let s focus our efforts on a few key pieces that are ongoing through 4-H; creating a welcoming atmosphere in 4-H clubs and recognizing the efforts of volunteers. Remember, everyone was new to 4-H at one point, and 4-H families are joining at any time of the year! Belonging is an Essential Element of 4-H. This element is present in 4-H when environments are safe and inclusive, with positive relationships developed between youth and caring adults. Think about a time when it was your first day attending a new school, a new job, or visiting a new location. What did you see when you entered for the first time? What feeling did you have before you got there? Were people there to welcome you and invite you in? Perhaps you were given a map or a schedule to help you find your way. Or, maybe none of those things were present. Think about your first time showing up to a 4-H activity - what was present? What would you have liked to see improved? In 4-H, we promote the feeling of belonging through welcoming all families - new and returning. This starts with personal interaction. Consider what your club atmosphere is like - do club officers or leaders be sure to recognize new families? Does someone meet them and learn their names when they arrive? How could your club improve the belonging element? Anyone in the club can help welcome new members! Some ideas to try may include introductions at the beginning of meetings, providing an agenda at club meetings to follow along with, or offering a contact list of leaders who can help answer questions. A second focus at this time of year is recognizing those who help us out! A simple thank you after a meeting is a welcome form of recognition for many of our volunteers. Perhaps you may choose to send them a note after they ve done something helpful, or you recognize them at the next meeting by publicly sharing how they have assisted. Maybe you ll consider nominating an adult 4-H leader as Volunteer of the Month - see more information on page 12. Winnebago County 4-H currently has 181 adult volunteers at the time of this newsletter being printed! That is excellent! Be sure to mark your calendars for NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK, April Our UWEX office is planning a few ways to thank our many volunteers in our programs - stay tuned! Your partners in making the best better, Kayla Oberstadt Sarah Thompson Michelle Peplow 3

In March we will have a farrier clinic so we can learn more about how to keep our horses feet healthy and what we should be doing in between farrier appointments! Then in April, we will be holding a show prep clinic where we will include how to properly braid, band, put in a tail, and all the rest of the things you need to know to successfully get your horse ready before a show! This clinic will be especially helpful to also remind us what we all need to have in a show bag / go bag. Are you interested in or thinking of joining the Horse Bowl / Judging team? Here you are able to compete in horse trivia competitions with a team. This also counts as educational hours! Remember to check Facebook / your for updates on practice times and locations! Don t forget to like us on Facebook at Winnebago County 4-H Horse and Pony Project and also remember to watch your for updates. 20

21 Poultry News Paula Lehrer, Do you have your chicks? Are they ordered? Will you get them before March 20? That is the target date for 4-month-old birds. All birds must be 4-months-old or older to be tested. All birds have to be tested to be shown. The Fond du lac show is on March 12. A full flock Pullorum Test can be done at any time and will be required again this year. If you have a full flock from last year you need to renew it by June 31. A full flock test can be done even if some of your birds are NOT 4-months-old. If all your birds are from this years hatch, came from a certified flock (NPIP or WI certified) and you have no existing poultry on the property, you DO NOT need testing this year. If you need different paper work, contact me and I will get you the right forms. (if you buy from a private breeder you need to get a copy of the NPIP number or WI tested flock, it is the law that all people selling poultry in WI need to be NPIP or WI tested, so are required to give you this number if you ask, swap meets, shows or on the farm). For those of you who use Facebook: I am running the group Northeast Wisconsin Poultry Network, it has postings of the known area (WI) Swap Meets, and Shows. If you would like to raise broilers for this year s fair, I am putting in an order of 25 to be delivered about 8 weeks before fair. Contact me by April 1, and I will tag 5 chicks as yours. Bring the 3 best to fair as a group, no testing needed. The cost will be $10 for 5 chicks This is useful for record keeping: 0&name=DLFE pdf Continued on next page... 21

22 Sex-link birds are crosses and will be shown in that class. This will include all the new fashionable breeds. Rhodebar, Legbar and so on. Birds with clipped beaks are not showable and will be DQ ed (disqualified). If you have any questions on what class your birds belong I can help you. The older the bird the easier it will be to ID (breed, sex, and color) So far, Bird Flu hasn t raised its head, so fingers crossed we will have a normal year for Shows and Swaps.
