2 OAKLAND UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY, Rochester, MI Oakland University Art Gallery internships are tailored to coordinate with the individual s career goals and offer a great opportunity to experience on-the-job responsibilities for those interested in an art - related field. Components of managing/operating a gallery are budgets, funding, clerical, loans, risk management, packing, space preparation, transportation, etc. For Art History Majors, the internship offers the opportunity to conduct research on artifacts/works in the Permanent Collection and use of museum software for data entry. The internship offers a unique behind the scenes experience that includes all aspects of gallery operations giving an advantage in the competitive job market. Qualifications: Potential candidates must be dependable, able to follow directions, work independently, and have a positive and enthusiastic demeanor. 3 MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART DETROIT, Detroit, MI Each exhibition season, MOCAD hosts between ten and twenty volunteers and interns who wish to broaden their education and professional experience by working and learning in a not-for-profit museum. Volunteers and interns are a vital component in the day-to-day operations at MOCAD, likewise volunteering or interning at the museum provides students and recent graduates the opportunity to get involved with the community, learn about contemporary art, and interact with museum visitors, employees, and special guests in a variety of ways. The staff at MOCAD strives to provide our volunteers and interns with an interesting and rewarding learning experience, and with valuable skills that they can draw on in the future. Internships are available in the following areas: Administration; Development; Education; Exhibitions; Graphic Design; Media Relations; Museum Store; Programming; and Special Events. Days and Hours Interns must be able to work a minimum of two days per week/seven hours per day. The exact schedule will be determined with the department supervisor. Interns must be able to work a full term. Eligibility All interested individuals over the age of 18 are eligible to apply for an internship. Qualifications vary for each intern position and some positions may require college or graduate training and/or professional experience. 4 DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS, Detroit MI The Detroit Institute of Arts, one of the leading art museums in the U.S., is seeking applicants for the positions of interns for summer The quality and comprehensive nature of its collections, the excellence of its staff, its library and its facilities, make the DIA an ideal environment for introducing students to the world of museums and non-profit organizations. While the DIA s internship program does not provide a stipend, arrangements may be made for academic credit in coordination with the student s sponsoring school. Interns work for a minimum of 15 hours per week. 11 ORION ARTS CENTER, Lake Orion, MI 115 S. Anderson St., Lake Orion, Mi 48361, , Art and the internet: Internship would include: - Social media marketing. This student would have proficiency in Facebook and Pintrest (additional social media a plus) and help us design vibrant home pages for the Orion Art Center. Student would also work with a group of OAC volunteers to create a strategy for regular postings that have impact, and compelling content to create conversation about art and artists. - Help research the best places to post art offerings, calls for entries, and the OAC profile - Help develop contact lists for artists and artist groups from around the region with whom we can partner History of the Orion Art Center: Next year the Orion Art Center will turn 35 years old. We'd like to create an exhibit that honors and celebrates the artists who founded our organization. Background: We're located in a century old house originally owned by Lake Orion's 150 year old MethodistChurch. A group of artists rescued the house from demolition and raised money to move it 2 blocks to our present location near the Paint Creek. Internship would include: - Help researching and recording our building's history. - Contacting original member artists who have some fabulous stories! - Locating member artwork, copies of any original photos, documents, newspaper articles. - Help conducting interviews for use in a short video documentary that captures the original spirit of their vision. The Biz of Art internship: Our artists are hungry for information about how to turn their art into a business. We've started a Biz of Art monthly workshop that has been very popular. Internship would include: -Creating a list of topics that would give artists a business perspective and breaking it down into manageable bites. Ex: how to show your work in a Gallery, how to license your art, how to set up a business, the basics of selling at an art show, how to sell online, etc. - Helping to locate, contact and schedule local experts that could talk with artists - Writing content to describe the workshops to market the series. - Help researching grants to finance series OAC's Artist Shop internship: Our shop needs help! I would love to have interns that have ideas on how to freshen it up. Internship would include: - Finding new and interesting artists to show their work. - Helping to develop a system of rotating artist work. - Creating a fresh presentation for artist work. - Helping to market the shop in an innovative way. 12 STARKWEATHER ARTS CENTER, Romeo, MI Starkweather Arts Center 219 N. Main Romeo, MI Starkweather Arts Center Internships Starkweather Arts Center Is a non-profit art center located on Main Street in the Village of Romeo, located north of Detroit Michigan. Starkweather owes its existence to a trust created by Helen Starkweather, a lifelong resident of Romeo. It is the goal of the SAC to foster and promote artistic excellence in the Village of Romeo and surrounding communities. By providing quality art experiences through art education, exhibits and events, Starkweather aims to enhance the quality of life in Northern Macomb County. Duties: One of the primary roles of the intern will be to help staff the Starkweather Arts Gallery and Gift Shop and maintain the daily operations. This includes engaging with visitors to the gallery, facilitating art sales, cleaning, and minor/routine maintenance. The intern may also be involved in maintaining inventory records and management systems, updating and producing content for social media, and installing exhibitions. Interns will be expected to staff the gallery and gift shop for approximately 10+ hours per week including 4 hours on Saturdays. Some of the secondary roles of the intern include his or her area of expertise and interests. In coordination with the Director, interns will have the possibility of utilizing their skills in various matters, exhibition programming, etc.; Educational/didactic - community and educational outreach, lectures, workshops; Corporate identity (website, logo, signage, etc.) - assisting with publication, posters, announcement design, including photo-documentation of Starkweather Arts Center exhibits and activities; Fundraising - assisting with grant writing, research, etc.; Exhibition Design - assisting with layout and installation of special exhibitions. 13 DETROIT CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY, Detroit, MI The DCCP internship program welcomes students and recent graduates who wish to broaden their education and professional experience by working and learning in a not-for- profit gallery. The program offers experiential education in a challenging, hands-on environment in exchange for a substantive contribution from talented and interested individuals. The gallery presents an ambitious photographic print and video exhibitions as well as educational workshops and field trips, and interns have the unique opportunity to participate in the development and expansion of these programs and operations. There are three application deadlines and selection periods per year. Internships require a minimum commitment of eight hours per week for three months, during which time interns may complete a number of exclusive projects as well as daily assignments. Interns also participate in departmental meetings, special events, and various educational programs, as well as attend regular museum programming. Internship Term Application deadline is three weeks before the start of the term. Deadline: December 20 for Winter/Spring Term (Jan Apr. 30) Deadline: April 15 for Summer Term (May 1st - Jul. 31) Deadline: August 15 for Fall Term (Sep. 1 - Dec. 30) Days and Hours Interns must be able to work a minimum of eight hours per week, including one session of gallery sitting during regular open hours. 15 HATCH, Hamtramck, MI Internship Job description: A majority of the tasks carried out by an intern for Hatch will be at our building located at 3456 Evaline in Hamtramck. The Hatch Gallery, the gift shop, the workshop, the classroom and the studios are all located here. Responsibilities outside of the building will be noted by location 1. Running the gallery/gift shop: Open and close the gallery/gift shop, Saturday from 1pm to 6 pm. Responsibilities include unlocking the front door, setting out a sign, turning on lights/projector/ electronics associated with the art in the gallery, and setting up tables with information. In the winter, the heat should be set to 63 degrees. Closing the involves turning off all lights/electronics, making sure front and back doors and the gift shop are locked, and in the winter lowering the temperature to 54 degrees. For the gift shop, count and record the till at the start and the end of the shift. 2. Cleaning/maintenance: During open hours on Saturday depending on available time cleaning and general maintenance needs to be done. Cleaning involves a regular schedule of sweeping floors, cleaning bathrooms, dusting, etc. You will learn how to do maintenance needed such as patching, painting, repairing and so on. 3. Installation/de---installation: When new shows open you will help with installing artwork, creating and placing labels, and creating signage. In de-installing help with caring for and moving the art plus help in repairing gallery walls for the next show. This includes shows at Café 1923, a coffee shop in Hamtramck where we also have regular shows. 4. Promotion/design work: Help promote Hatch activities and gallery shows. You will be given access to the Hatch Facebook page and to help us promote events and recruit. You may also be asked to create press releases, graphics, postcards, posters, etc as part of promotion. In addition you will be given a list of media contacts to send press releases 5. Activities and events: According to an agreed upon schedule you may also be asked to help with activities such as gallery crawls, drawing sessions movie nights, critiques, workshops and more. This may simply involve opening and closing the building or it may involve be a part of it. We would like to have you involved in at least one activity, which could be one you created yourself. Events include art festivals, where we need help inventorying an pricing stock, determining displays and preparing materials. 6. Curating: Curate a gallery show either for the Hatch Gallery or for the Café 1923 (to be decided by the Hatch board). Create a proposal and recruit artwork. Contact and organize artists involved. Create promotional material and help spread the word. 7. Research/grant help: Help with assembling information needed to apply for grants. May involve researching grantors to find the best match contracting others to glean information and creating video/graphics. The schedule and number of hours worked will be negotiated with a minimum of 10 hours per week which need to include Saturday afternoon. Personal use of the building may also be part of the negotiation. Responsibilities on this list may change according to the needs of the Hatch board and the approval of the intern.
