I m a proud resident of the area it s a part of Rotorua that s steeped in Maori history. The area was the early settlement of the people of Ngati Whakaue so it s a significant place for local Maori. The hill at the point was a Maori pa and on its slopes were the gardens. Plots were allocated to the various families of Ngati Whakaue and the street names around the hill are named after some of those families. I love that rich history. Have a drink or a meal at the fantastic Peppers on the Point and enjoy the panoramic view. We locals know Rotorua is already a great place to be. It s only going to get better. There s also an excellent kura kaupapa which I think is one of the area s best kept secret. Must see and do activities in the inner city: Take a scenic walk around the point and along portions of the lakeshore. Link up to the cycleway that leads to the village of Ngongotaha, or head the other way, towards the central city, and take in the Kuirau Park section of Rotorua s new central city green corridor. Take the kids to Karenga Park and enjoy the fantastic youth space there, join in the regular free community events or take make use of the barbecues. Work, Life, Fashion in Kawaha Point In 2007, Nerida Johnstone, her husband and three young children packed their belongings and left Wellington to experience a life in Rotorua.

6 Work, Life, Fashion in Kawaha Point In 2007, Nerida Johnstone, her husband and three young children packed their belongings and left Wellington to experience a life in Rotorua. The ability to set their own pace, enjoy life and watch their kids grow up with Rotorua s scenic backdrop made the decision to move an easy one. The hustle and bustle of the city had become too much. says Nerida. We wanted a life that centred on raising the kids in the best possible environment. I can remember when we first arrived that they couldn t believe the amount of grass and open space. We immediately knew that we had made the right choice. As a keen sporting family, they were able to immerse themselves quickly in the community. Their sons have competed regionally for all the sports they have been involved with and son Billy has been selected for the New Zealand volleyball team. I found the nurturing nature of the coaches here was like nowhere else I ve seen and the community support is superb. Rotorua s central location is another bonus for the Johnstones; I grew up in Gisborne, so the beach invokes many childhood memories. To be able to throw the stuff in the car and be at some of NZ s best beaches in under an hour is amazing. The family settled in the charming suburb of Kawaha Point. Just in our street alone you will find a good curry at Maharaja s, you can be pampered at the Black Swan day 6 SUMMER EDITION 2016

The senior boys volleyball team winning their tenth National Secondary School Championship was another highlight of What s more, the school s rowers also won a number of medals at the Maadi Cup Regatta and the First XV boy s rugby team had a huge season, winning the Bay of Plenty first division. Not to be outdone, the school also achieved some great results in the arts with Kapiolani Kihi-Waikato placing first in the Smokefree Pacifica Beats and the senior hip hop team being crowned national champions in the Dance NZ Competition. Having worked at two local bronze cast foundries, and extensively in lost wax casting, Nerida was able to hone her skills. She then went on to launch Henare a year ago producing spectacular handmade pieces. Since then the venture has grown to supply select stockist across New Zealand and even a New York Gallery. With the launch of the new website and online store henare.nz, the future is looking bright. What do you enjoy most about your job? Work/life balance is the big thing for me. My field of work and running my own business allows me to work, be creative and still be actively involved with my children s lives. Now I wouldn t have it any other way. Life is too precious. Why is Rotorua a good place to base a small business like Henare? In my line of work people want an authentic, handmade product that is genuinely inspired by nature and being based in Rotorua s nature scape has only added value to that. Rotorua s central location also enables me to pop off to Auckland when I need to, but I can also do a lot from my computer. I even do business while walking my dog and watching the kids sports games. The community business networks have also been great, in particular the Takiwai Maori Business Network. Do you have any projects that you are working on? I am currently working with a group of inspirational designers, educational institutes, the council, and local professionals and organisations to hold an event that showcases fashion here in The Rotorua community has been so supportive, in particular the creative and business sectors, and I m excited to be giving something back. GRL is aligned with the priorities and goals of RLC which have both a near term (2016) and longer term (2030) horizon. In developing key investment prospects, GRL is cognisant of global, national and regional trends which could present opportunities and/or major disruptions. HOW DOES GRL HELP/BENEFIT INVESTORS? a. Identify and develop logically robust investment value propositions b. Communicate and promote new propositions to the investment community c. Facilitate private sector investment d. Identify and propose solutions for the barriers to creating investment wealth e. Understand and promote to the local education sector the capability and skills required. INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO Virtually all projects being worked on have an investment requirement attached. As projects are developing, there is always a view towards the final build phase and right from the early stages, potential investment partners are being identified. This is particularly the case where Maori interests are involved such as access to geothermal resources. Grow Rotorua is systematically building a Portfolio of Investment Opportunities in Rotorua which will be loaded onto the Grow Rotorua Website.
