Communities Can is a Big Lottery-funded project developing the skills, knowledge and capacity of below the radar community organisations (BTROs). It is focussed on the individuals, groups and organisations who help keep their community together by providing grassroots services and localised support. What is it trying to achieve? Communities Can aims to support BTROs in doing what they already do well, but on a more stable footing. The broader aim of this pilot project is to build an understanding of what works to increase the impact of BTROs in their area and potentially at a wider regional and national level. How does it work?

12 Communities Can is run by The Young Foundation. It is being delivered in five pilot areas of England Barking & Dagenham, Blackpool, Peterborough, Sunderland and Torbay. In each area The Young Foundation is partnering with a local organisation to map and understand the needs of local BTROs. The project will leverage existing support providers at a local and national level to deliver tailored capacity building support to these BTROs. We are currently building an online directory of providers who wish to participate in the project. The Communities Can grant panel will match each BTRO to an appropriate local, regional or national support provider from the directory. This provider will work to meet the specific development needs of the BTRO. Payment of up to 2,500 will be paid to the provider to cover the cost of their time in delivering this support. Providers may deliver more than one support project at a time. BTROs will rate the support they receive. This rating will be available publicly via the online directory. It is anticipated this directory will become an open source of information for the sector. How do I get involved? If you would like to be added to the Communities Can Support Provider database please following the link below to complete a short, online form detailing the areas of expertise you would be able to offer. More information at: More Money for Flood Fund 51 Million More for Homes and Businesses Affected by Floods (Cumbria & Lancashire) The Government has announced an additional 51 million to support households and businesses affected by the floods in Cumbria and Lancashire. The money will be used to: Help the people directly affected by the floods Providing grants of up to 5000 to households, so they can install new flood barriers, replace doors and windows with water resistant alternatives, or move electricity sockets up to a safer level Ensure flood affected businesses that have had their trading disrupted can get back on their feet, with funding equivalent to 2,500 provided to Local Authorities for each business affected and funding specifically provided for farmers to help restore their land; etc. To ensure this funding is delivered quickly and efficiently, the government is creating a new Community Recovery Scheme worth nearly 40 million. It will be run by local authorities and provide targeted support on the same basis as in the floods that affected the South West and other parts of the country in 2013 to The government also recognises the important work by local charities in helping respond to the floods and will match the money raised in by the Cumbria Foundation s Flood Appeal up to 1 million.
