2 Lae Chamber of Commerce Inc EXECUTIVE COUNCIL President Alan McLay Snr Vice President Nigel Merrick Jnr Vice President Robert Howden Treasurer Stephen Beach Councillors Philip Franklin Peter Diezmann Kaity Bluett Dennis Brewster Terry Fuery Danny Kepi Ben Woo Andrew Gunn Mike Quinn Vanessa Chan Pelgen Tony Wyatt Robert Hansen Objectives of the LCCI To promote the business interests of the private sector; To further the economic development in Lae; To ensure the provision of services and utilities essential to such development; To provide a representative body for business people, which government can consult; To promote support or oppose legislation; or take any other measures to improve the business community; To provide a forum for discussion of private sector goals; To pool the strengths of business people so that together, they can accomplish tasks that each one alone cannot achieve; To promote the economic viability of the area, so those current businesses will grow and new ones will be developed locally; To provide business with a common voice. NEW CABINET APPOINTED (Cont) The Cabinet is a mix of 23 re-elected members and 10 freshly elected members, including one of the three new female members. This will make for a well balanced National Executive Council and the newcomers will benefit from the experience of those who have been there before. We trust that the mistakes of the past will not be transferred on as well. As our well informed blogger Tavurvur s Garumut rightly states what happened to the Ministers positions for Internal Security & Minister for Rural Development? UNITECH LAE The Lae based Papua New Guinean University of Technology is one of the prime higher learning facilities in the country and as it is right on our doorstep, the Private Sector has a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of what the institution offers as far as well trained and qualified potential employees, through scholarship arrangements or direct recruitment. Unfortunately over the past few years the University has distanced itself from the Private Sector to a certain extent, and hence we have had little opportunity to participate or contribute to the Institution. The Vice Chancellor of the University Dr. Albert Schram would like to meet as many representatives from companies in Lae to discuss with them the different courses that the Unitech has on offer, and the way that Company s can benefit from a closer association with the institution. Dr. Schram also wishes to make the private sector aware of the plans that Unitech has for the RAINFOREST HABITAT. As you may know the LCCI and other interested parties tried to save the RFH as a wonderful asset and a prime tourist attraction for the city of Lae some years ago. The RFH is still functioning but is no longer open for regular visits. To give members the opportunity to meet Dr. Schram, a breakfast has been organised next week, where Dr. Schram will make a presentation to LCCI Members on what the University of Technology has to offer and to discuss the future of the Rainforest Habitat. Dr. Schram will be accompanied by senior staff as well as a selection of senior students, and all will be available for one on one discussions.
3 You are invited you to a presentation and discussion on what UNITECH offers your business. Also what is happening with the rain forest habitat? INVITATION TO BREAKFAST MEET THE VICE CHANCELLOR OF THE PAPUA NEW GUINEA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY DR. ALBERT SCHRAM With a presentation on: 1. WHAT UNITECH CAN OFFER YOU? 2. THE FUTURE OF THE RAINFOREST HABITAT? Where: Date and time: Cost: lae international hotel Bulolo Room 7:00 am on Thursday 16 august K65.00 per head The LCCI will also provide a run down on what is new in the Chamber during this event. This is your chance to find out what Unitech can offer your company and how you can have an input into the Institution. DON T MISS OUT! Please book by reply to this or ring Wendie or Jenna on and advise of your attendance and of any guests you may wish to bring. We have a deadline of 10 am Tuesday 14 th August for you to book. Payment for members and their guests must be made to the LCCI prior to the event. Remember no refunds for no-shows. International Chamber of Commerce News Alert! WCF Director recognized for commitment to chamber profession Paris, 6 August 2012 ICC World Chambers Federation (WCF) Director Anthony Parkes, has been awarded Certified Chamber Executive (CCE) status to become one of only 517 chamber executives to have received the certification in the past 39 years.
