Finished trunk section of anatomy. Town Hall meeting today, 2014: Triumphant in the powderpuff showdown. 3 of 4 neuro exams done. More Foundations of Doctoring sessions coming up 2013: Third years are the most represented class at this meeting. On rotations. Still. Received ICC schedule 2012: First trickles of interviews, some are on rotations, some are not Student Affairs: 4 th years: Still in Dean s Letter heaven, but seniors should have gotten notice that they will be finalizing Dean s Letters soon. Hoping that they can get the word out to their class.. 3 rd years: Working on evaluations, trying to make sure they will be able to get dean s letters out sooner 2 nd years: Planning retreat which will make them third years 1 st years: Working on Student Affairs role in Clinical Interlude for December OSR: - National meeting is in Denver. They are trying to plan which students will be - Dr. Rogers, Dean of Student Affairs at Vanderbilt University coming in November, and he will be talking about Hogwarts-style houses at University of Colorado Communications Update: Dan Meyers (dan.meyers@ucdenver.edu) - Facts & Updates: o Medical School Website: up 33% in terms of unique visits to the website, 500,000/month o Website profiling students continuously o Videos on the homepage o Upcoming Facebook page in Januaru - CU Medicine Today: 17,000 online readers up from a couple hundred o Engagement with students: page by page analysis of Spring 2011 issue looking at student representation in the magazine Inclusion of topics relevant to students o Coming issue: BRANCH feature and highlights of other public service
2 - Dan Meyers: worked in newspapers, then for Colorado Public Radio before coming to CU- SOM o Internal communications o External communications o Examples of what he does: call from first year student from NCAA who was up for an award, let Dan Meyers know as a courtesy, so pleased to hear this story for the school - Suggestions from students: o Erik Arellano- mobile site o Stevie Lynne Kohler- unique curriculum more up front o Ryan Farmer- difficult to locate the index, A-Z index of people on campus o Eric Petersen- kept being popped over to Auraria Campus o Matt Leroue- if medical school is putting on an event that would like to have community engagement and have a community event, do we tell Dan Meyers? Yes. Also have list serves available to send out the information - Please communicate with him about student involvement with any good projects The Medical Examiner: Ksenia - Newsletter and newspaper that has been revitalized in the last year - One issue released in Spring 2011 and another issue coming out soon - Started in 1993, solicited articles last year - Encountered problems with logistics and editing to ensure that content is appropriate - Goal to quote Dan Meyers is quality product you are proud of. - Students involved are mainly 3 rd years and 4 th years, looking for involvement from 1 st and 2 nd years o Will advertise in lecture halls tomorrow, Thursday, September 29 th o Not necessarily looking for experienced editors, only those who are passionate about it o Want to wait until after anatomy is over for the first year students - Content: anything that you feel might be interesting to other students o How do we present more sensitive topics? o Avoid accusations in tone of critique pieces, offer solutions for change - Looking for MD contributor: have not been successful, open to suggestions - R.A.T.s: Random Aurora Tips - Updates from class representatives - Student published, student run, don t necessarily want to change that- self-censorship - Print issue and issue - Student thoughts: o Matt Leroue: Any progress toward faculty advisor? Dean Garrity: Decision made that she should not be in that role, three names of physicians who responded to Dean Krugman s o Jason Murphy: How many publications per year? Four, but could do more beefy publication if they do two a year Would need more editors Next Issue end of November, submissions due by end of October o Dean Garrity: Any contributions from Dan Meyers?
3 Available for consultation for any issues that arise At-Large Elections - Nathan Lamborn: 3 rd year medical student, would like to run for at-large representative. o Was an at-large representative last year o Would be humbled to be a part of this organization. o All in favor with the exception of one opposed: Matt Powers, one abstention: Jason Murphy Financial Aid Update: Damien Illing & Nathan Lamborn - Part of MSC s movement to better utilize elected representatives - Update from the past year o Talked to Deedee Collusy after they had solicited concerns from their classmates o Felt that this year went more smoothly than last year o Comments: timing of disbursement at August due to the fact that rent is typically due on the 1 st of the month Office shoots for the first week of each phase of the year Students need to continue to communicate with Financial Aid on this issue o Deedee will be speaking at each class s town hall meetings in the fall o Working with OSR on coordinating Dean s Dialogue about tuition and fees and their yearly increases and getting that information out to students o Bursar s Office, Financial Aid Office, Student Affairs have been very available with respect to communications- i.e. same day turnaround - Student questions: o Matt Leroue: Is it possible for them to send s out at least a month ahead of time before the students will be receiving disbursements? Communication with students regarding changes to any financial aid (i.e. Stafford loans and interest no longer being deferred)? o Christie Osborne: Could you guys get information out to your student representatives after you have a meeting so we could get it posted on the website? Sure o Damian Illing: Make sure that if students have individual questions about financial aid that they don t go through their representatives, please go directly to Financial Aid o Sarah Gitomer: could they make information available about specific loans? White Coat Fund - Two calling sessions, have raised $450 - Pledge cards out, have received two - Leadership: will have to address at the retreat MSC Finances - See attached presentation from Kathan Amin in Meeting Minutes documents - Student Interest Groups: o Online form that will send all of the information directly to Terri Wood
4 o Will cover booking rooms and ordering food o Will allow us to keep a tighter reign on budget and simplify things for Terri - Goals: see presentation - Vote on allocation of budget: o Option 1: Events: $10,000 Dinners: $2,000 Travel: $8,000 SIG: $5,500 o Option 2: Events: $5,500 Dinners: $2,500 Travel: $9,000 SIG: $8,000 - Student questions: o Sarah Dodd: Format for power point slide? Matt Leroue: Gives us leverage to show finite examples of how students have benefited Kathan: Would compile summaries into actual presentation, because at this point he is receiving a broad spectrum of slides Ben Deaton: Give specific format o Erik Arellano: Will you prompt with questions? Yes. o Sarah Gitomer: Student Senate format for post-travel form. o Kathan Amin: Form will be on the MSC website o Matt Leroue: Instituting 14-day limit on requests for reimbursement - Discussion: o Ryan Farmer: Events that MSC funds are changing year to year, but expenses have changed? Matt Leroue: Funding for prom was not recouped o Courtney Holscher: Do we really need to vote on a pie chart, if we tend to simply do our own things? Matt Leroue: We would like to do a better job of maintaining a living breathing budget, so that we can come back to it on a monthly basis Represent the budget better o Nathan Lamborn: Which pie charts had excess? Which were deficient? Kathan: went above on events last year, and then did not fund as much in the way of travel Were more stringent last year on student group expenditures o Erik Arellano: Set caps on one subset of funding? Guidelines? Kathan: Decisions being made based on values, more transparency with more information sent out to MSC o Courtney Holscher: Budget request: Dr. Rogers travel expenses $1,000 Issue will be discussed on Saturday - Values: to be discussed on Saturday MSC Retreat on Saturday, October 1 st : 11:30am-4:30pm
