3 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT It has been a challenging and rewarding year for us at the Chamber of Commerce. The business community as a whole is facing uncertainty, with volatile business conditions and a changeable political structure at every level. Our efforts this past year in dealing with economic and political developments have been extensive. It is my personal hope that our efforts can been built on in upcoming years, and that the Grand Bend and Area Chamber of Commerce can continue to provide positive leadership for our members. This meeting marks the final involvement of several directors. Please join me in thanking them for their efforts, and in welcoming their fresh faced replacements. Sincerely, Glen Baillie, President OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS Networking New for for the first time in recent memory, the Chamber offered true member-focused events to provide fellow business owners and their employees opportunities to network and plug-in to the Chamber and the Community. Events were well attended and positive feedback received in the anticipation of these events continuing. Mayor s Breakfast (February 2012) The purpose of this type of event is to provide Chamber members and their guests and local political representatives a casual environment in which to share opinions, perspectives and information that builds understanding and common ground. 33 attendees, including Lambton Shores Mayor Bill Weber, MPP Monte McNaughton Hosted by Aunt Gussie s Country Dining Sponsored by Bayshore Broadcasting / the Beach Member Mixers (April & October, 2012) Member s mixers are pure networking and relationship building opportunities for Chamber members and their guests. Purposely held at different Chamber member business locations in order to build awareness of fellow Chamber businesses, their premises and what they offer. These events offer a casual social backdrop to the sharing of insights and potential for members to help on another build their businesses and promote their products and services. Each event was attended by about 50+ members with the Spring Mixer offering live music by Patrick Powers Fabulous sampling of the host venue s finger foods and menu offerings by Whitecaps Smoke House Sports Bar (April) and Sunset Grill/Jalapeños (October) Sponsored by Hay Communications (April) and The Fisher Corporation (October) Page 2

4 Golf Tournament (September 2012) Held for the first time in 10 years, the Chamber s Fall Classic Golf Tournament was resurrected to a great reception. Within just a couple of months, the Golf Tournament Committee organized and implemented a successful and enjoyable event. Many thanks go to Dave Bartlam and Colin Scatcherd of Oakwood Inn Resort for their support, ideas and great assistance in making the tournament such a success and flawlessly executed. The tournament offered great opportunities for members to socialize, meet other members and network for improving their own businesses. We had a report back that at least one business deal was made on the greens! Golf Tournament Committee: Thanks to Nancy Starek (RBC Dominion Securities), Mark Lewis (104.9 the Beach) and Dale Wilson (Chamber Volunteer) Congratulations to the Winning Team the Sarnia Firefighters: Brad Forbes, Chris Palmer, Duane Carr and Mac Dunlop. 5 Special Events Celebrate the Season Gala Dinner & Awards Night In the past, the year-end members dinner and awards have been grouped together with year-end business requirements (presentation of financial statements, election of directors, bylaw changes, resolutions etc). Since the preference is to have a year-end social event prior to Christmas, before many members take some vacation, the dinner and awards remain a November event, while the financial reporting and director elections have moved to February to allow for the legally required professional review of the financial documents. New for 2012, the Chamber added an award with a focus on community contributions. Named the Dave Scatcherd Community Spirit Award, this award is presented to a community member who goes beyond their usual role, who is community minded and known for their support, commitment and dedication to making the Grand Bend Area a more vibrant, prosperous and welcoming community. The recipient has a self-less way of making the community a priority and truly believes in community spirit. This award is open to all citizens that truly give back to the community. We thank Dave Scatcherd and the Scatcherd Family for extending the Scatcherd name to this new award. It s a fitting name for an award that mirrors Dave Scatcherd s 32-years of commitment to Community Living and other charitable organizations via the David Scatcherd Invitational Golf Tournament which has raised more than $2 million over the years for children with physical and mental challenges. The inaugural recipient was well-known local resident Jim Southcott the parade guy! Since becoming a year-round resident six years ago, Jim has actively and passionately thrown himself into the life and spirit of the community. He recently helped create the Grand Bend Historical Walk, a self-guided tour of the old Grand Bend. Jim has been a leader in other community projects as well, such as the Main Beach Enhancements, Rotary Club and assorted other groups working to build a better community. Held at Hessenland Country Inn, Thursday November 22, 2012 More than 75 attendees Guest speaker Peter Smith, Interim Artistic Director of Blyth Festival provided an amusing and sardonic speech complete with playbill run-down for 2013 Huge silent auction thank you to all the bidders! 6 Business Partnerships Through the provision of tourism services, the Chamber works closely with Tourism Sarnia Lambton (TSL), Sarnia Lambton Chamber of Commerce (SLCOC), Sarnia Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP) and Huron Tourism Association (HTA). This work is carried out through the Chamber s representation of Lambton Shores on TSL s and HTA s Board of Directors. New for The Chamber was invited and participated in the Lambton County Advocacy Trip to Queen s Park in the Spring to highlight the changing face of Lambton County (we re more than oil!), the economic challenges facing the County in light of closures of manufacturing firms, the jail in Sarnia and OLG slots. New for In addition, throughout 2012 as a member of the Lambton County Branding Initiative Committee (headed up by George Malley of SLEP), the Chamber participated in the need identification, development of a request for proposal, selection of winning bidders and implementation of the project. The goal of the Branding Initiative is to give Lambton County a brand that all parts of the County can support and with which to identify much like Huron County s Ontario s West Coast brand. The project s results launch in the latter part of New for In addition to partnerships at the county-level, the Chamber and Forest BIA Board of Directors have ed, phoned and met to discuss ways in which our two key retail sectors of Lambton Shores could work together for our mutual benefit. Although our work together has only just begun, this spring will see the launch of an online mapping tool overlaid with key retail, attraction and event layers to assist area visitors in finding the businesses, events or attractions they seek. This online tool will feed into both GrandBendTourism.com and ShopForest.ca seamlessly while also being mobile device ready offering turn by turn directions to smartphone owners to local businesses. New for 2012 During 2012, the Municipality of Lambton Shores signed a 2-year contract with the Chamber for the provision of tourism services. This agreement extends into The Municipality supported our tourism services efforts to the tune of $16,337. Although this is a small portion of the real cost of promoting this area to tourists and potential new residents or businesses, we appreciate the acknowledgement of our efforts on behalf of Lambton Shores. Community & Public Affairs The Chamber s efforts extend to investing in the issues facing our community and assisting community groups and service organizations. Parking, Traffic Congestion & Pedestrian Safety letter to Lambton Shores Council Parking, traffic congestion and pedestrian safety have long been issues for central Grand Bend. In 2011 the Chamber hosted a parking summit that invited local residents to share their experience, knowledge and feedback to provide the Municipality with some concrete suggestions for action. More recently, leading up to Council s budget meetings, the Chamber submitted a letter respectively requesting that parking, pedestrian safety and traffic congestion in Grand Bend be given priority placement. The letter went on to remind Council of the Chamber s conversations and discussions with Grand Bend businesses and residents including the Parking Summit (Grand Bend Legion August 29, 2011) and were summarized as follows: Parking: Additional parking could be provided by: 1. Use of angle parking on 81 Crescent Street. Page 5

7 2. Use of angle parking on River Road with a 2-hour parking limit west of the Municipal boat launch. 3. Maximizing the Municipal parking lot located behind the Grand Bend Legion in both number of available spots and strong signage to direct tourists to this otherwise hidden location. 4. Developing the little-used parkette on the south side of Main Street adjacent to the current Municipal parking lot located at Eilber Street and Main Street into additional parking. 5. Developing overflow lots through partnerships with property owners. Pedestrian Safety: As well as parking, pedestrian safety was a major concern identified from the Parking Summit. Specifically, pedestrian access crossing Highway 21 / Ontario Street in front of the LCBO / No-Frill s shopping plazas and in front of Tim Horton s / Grandpa Jimmy s Scottish Bakery. The report s pedestrian safety recommendations were: 6. Install pedestrian crosswalks on Highway 21/Ontario Street South and North in front of the No-Frill s / LCBO shopping plazas and in front of Tim Horton s / Grandpa Jimmy s Scottish Bakery. 7. Install/construct covered pedestrian walkways on either side of the Ontario Street South bridge immediately south of the Highway 21/Main Street intersection. Traffic Congestion: Traffic congestion was labelled not just a significant obstacle to retail sales, but also as a restriction on the use and enjoyment of Grand Bend by its residents and large cottage-owner contingent. The report s recommendations were: 8. Increase the length of the current left-turning lane south of the Highway 21 / Main Street intersection. 9. Revamp the bridge to eliminate the sidewalks and increase the number of lanes (this recommendation will need to be undertaken in conjunction with the construction of the two covered pedestrian walkways mentioned in Item 7 above). 10. Construct a second crossing over the Ausable River connecting Pinedale Road south of the town to Gill Road enabling eastbound traffic to move around the town instead of through the town s Main Street intersection. 11. Change the lane markings north of the Highway 21 / Main Street intersection to two northbound lanes. Economic Development Task Force The Municipality formed an Economic Task Force during 2012 to gather community input into what a final Committee and its direction would take. The Chamber s Glen Baillie participated in the Task Force to highlight the local business perspective on economic development. As part of its support for economic development, the Chamber distributed the Committee s survey to our members and published it on our website as well. Creative County Committee The Chamber s Glen Baillie again volunteered to represent key elements and attractors of our community by joining Lambton's Creative County Committee. Created by County Council, this Committee seeks to encourage and fund activities that build a greater sense of identity, history and pride of place. Support for Community Groups & Events During 2012, we wrote several letters of support for local businesses, events and groups including the Grand Bend Motorplex, Grand Bend Historical Society, Aquafest and for a Port Sanilac to Grand Bend yacht/boat race. Grand Bend Motorplex submitted a Celebrate Ontario Grant application in order to build and expand the very popular Canadian MOPAR Nitro Jam Nationals motor sport event. In our letter of support we reported Page 6

8 research results from Regional Tourism Organization #4 (RTO4), which identified five lead experiences that trigger tourist travel motor sports being one of those triggers. The Tourist Welcome Centre sees an increase in inquiries about Motorplex and MOPAR more than a month ahead of the event. Funding that would enable the event to grow in size and caliber of competing drivers would definitely draw increased tourists into the area and in turn provide increased revenue opportunities for local business. Grand Bend Historical Society chaired by Jim Southcott - published a popular self-guided tour brochure that residents and visitors could reference while enjoying Grand Bend s Main Street and River Road. The brochure highlights key buildings, providing interesting and fun facts of prior owners and building use. The second part of their two-phase project includes placing plaques on these key buildings to readily identify them to pedestrians, honour Grand Bend s past and instill more civic pride. Jim provided the Welcome Centre with about 250 copies during 2012 which literally left our counter almost as soon as they arrived. In our letter of support, we highlighted the connection between the Historical Society s initiatives and RTO research results, which reveal today s tourists seek heritage-focused, ready-made experiential tours again, one of the five identified travel triggers. We stated our belief that the Historical Society s brochure and plaque program is a timely project that would enhance Grand Bend s appeal to history-buff tourists. A good amount of the brochure s content and photographs were integrated into this year s visitor guide. In our letter of support for Aquafest Grand Bend s local water and environmentally themed festival we were again able to quote RTO research results. Festivals and events are one of the five travel triggers and their importance to the town s tourist traffic flow cannot be underestimated. In late May we received a request from Port Sanilac resident William Hartnup asking for a letter of support in favour of a Port Sanilac to Grand Bend yacht/boat race. In the past, there was once a Grand Bend to Port Sanilac race known as the Grand Bend 100 a well-promoted, popularly attended event that drew tourist and media attention. Due to post 9/11 US Customs & Border protection documentation and fee requirements, the number of racers involved with the event dropped over time until ultimately the event ceased to exist. In our letter of support we acknowledged the red tape requirements currently in place but urged Port Sanilac Council to consider the economic advantages to both our communities with the resurrection of the Grand Bend 100. Obviously the issues of cross-border security are beyond Council authority of either Port Sanilac or Lambton Shores, but the Chamber confirmed future support of this event if negotiations or plans were moving towards presenting the yacht race again. As the area s second-largest economic engine, support for travel trigger events and attractions are key economic generating factors. For a complete report of the Chamber s tourism services activities during 2012, please refer to the Lambton Shores Tourism Services Report available at the Welcome Centre or online at In general, Chamber support of community events and groups includes free marketing and advertising on our website, having event flyers posted on the outdoor display board, distribution of event information by to our Members, special event webpages, access to any contra advertising agreements we have negotiated, submission of event information to all provincial and regional websites and guides with which we have a relationship or in which we advertise, provide record and/or equipment storage (yes you will find Benguin at the Chamber!) and loan of our phone number and address as a point-of-contact for inquiries. 9 AWARDS & RECOGNITION Awards presented at the Celebrate the Season Gala Dinner at Hessenland County Inn included: Business of the Year Medway Homes Medway Homes is a custom home builder business that s family-owned and operated and now in its second-generation with Paul Pittao and wife Sue at the helm. In its 20 years, Medway Homes developed and built Merrywood Meadows and Harbourside Village. Medway Homes built 80+ area houses that collectively contribute more than $3.2 million in property tax revenue and whose home-buyers spending power supports local businesses. Medway Homes has contributed in a very large way to the ongoing modernization and progression of Grand Bend into a successful year round community. In addition to their significant contribution to the local economy through their business, Paul and Sue Pittao support the community through their volunteer efforts with Rotary events, cancer fundraisers and sponsorship of and coaching with the Grand Bend Youth Baseball Association. Entrepreneur of the Year Mary-Jo Schottroff-Snopko Mary-Jo took over Pine Dale Motor Inn s management 15 years ago. Since then she has worked tireless promoting the Grand Bend Community to guests, visitors and stakeholders. Her innovative and creative approach is demonstrated by efforts to keep Pine Dale Motor Inn ahead of the marketing curve and to be a family-friendly inn that continues to resonate with guests. In fall and winter months, Mary-Jo works with incoming sports teams, all family-based groups with school-age players, providing key spaces to accommodate team-related meals and events, including the provision of specialty amenities that appeal to this market. Her influence also sees Pine Dale play host to annual shows and exhibits. Mary-Jo realized a long time ago that success in business meant reaching out to the community to participate in boards and organizations which strengthen our local networks. Her success is also a measure of the overall community s health and vitality. David Scatcherd Community Spirit Award The first recipient of this new award Jim Southcott - is a well-known and loved, local resident and a very active volunteer. Since becoming a year-round resident six years ago, Jim has actively and passionately thrown himself into the life and spirit of the community.
