1 WYCF General Grant Application Reviewer: Distribution Committee Program Area: Civil Rights/Social Justice ORGANIZATION INFORMATION Womentum Director: Ms. Caryn Flanagan Jackson, WY Phone: Mission Celebrate Wyoming women through art and media for their strength and share how to overcome obstacles on the road to success. Create a powerful collective of contemporary female role models who show what is possible in the rural west today, thereby encoura History Womentum is a group of inspired women in Jackson, Wyoming, who practice "action philanthropy" and believe that this is best achieved through a network of enthusiastic, talented, committed women. To make the greatest impact on women of this small town without duplicating powerful efforts of other nonprofit organizations, Womentum offers a unique mentoring program, Womentoring, to create systems change for the involved women and the entire community. Womentum is dedicated to harnessing women's intellectual, creative, and charitable spirit to effectuate meaningful social change for women. Womentoring is a mentoring program designed to build capacity and community. Focused on leadership skills and women's networks, Womentoring enables a diverse group of women to perform community service by committing time and energy to their own professional and personal growth. Womentoring has served over 80 women, ages 28 to 71, in one-on-one mentoring. Many of these women have gone on to pursue professional and civic leadership roles, two have been elected to office, the majority have increased their salary as well as their work and effectiveness. In addition, Womentum offers events and educational opportunities for the general public to increase knowledge and awareness of women's issues. In 2005 and 2006, Womentum hosted Lunafest with Wyoming First Lady Nancy Freudenthal. In 2007, "Women in Leadership" featured author Marie C. Wilson, President and founder of The White House Project, Wyoming First Lady Nancy Freudenthal, Wyoming Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Kite, and Jackson Town Councilwoman Melissa Turley. In 2008, Womentum partnered with The Nature Conservancy to host the inaugural Women's Conference on Sustainability examining links between environmental health and women's equality and economic self-sufficiency. PROJECT INFORMATION Board Participation: 25% Requested Amount: $25, Program Name: Portrait & Podcast production Summary Women in Wyoming features women across several Wyoming communities who represent the diverse ways to thrive in our state. Each multimedia profile reveals a roadmap for overcoming life's barriers through portrait photography and podcast interviews. Their journeys to success are openly accessible and shared on social media and WomeninWyoming.com. PROPOSAL NARRATIVE Description Seeing is believing. Research shows that an absence of accessible, inspirational role models is a barrier to developing successful, ambitious women. Moreover, confidence is life's enabler, turning thoughts into action. 1
2 Evidence shows that women and girls are less self-assured than men and to succeed, confidence matters as much as competence. Wyoming is the least populated state in the country and 10th largest in size. Unless one has direct exposure through family, friends or mentors, Wyoming's vast, rural divide means little exposure to greater role models and life's many paths to success. Therefore, visibility and access to role models combined with self-confidence building initiatives are of vital importance if we want Wyoming women and girls to strive for greatness and ultimately, contribute to Wyoming and beyond with their skills and knowledge. Women in Wyoming was established to share positive examples of contemporary role models for women and girls of all ages and turning points in their lives to look towards when thinking about who and what they can become. The series celebrates women for their strength, intellect and capacity, and showcases the diverse ways in which it is possible to thrive in Wyoming. Each story provides powerful insights into the journey of success and paths to overcoming life's barriers. Subjects are visible women to more unsung heroines from Wyoming's rural and urban communities, including Clarene Law, Justice Marilyn Kite and Wyoming State Senator Affie Ellis. Their stories are captured through portrait photography and podcast interviews and accessible on WomeninWyoming.com and social media. Total production budget for the completion of x25 profiles is $125,000. The project requests $25,000 in funding to produce an additional x5 profiles. The funds requested go towards vetting subjects, travel and production costs, interview editing and mastering, photo processing and retouching, website formatting, and project outreach initiatives. Expected Outcome and Sustainability Women in Wyoming's mission is to give visibility and voice to Wyoming women, their stories and show what is possible in the rural west today, while creating a powerful collective of role models for Wyoming women and girls. Upon successful implementation, x25 diverse, multimedia profiles of women representing an array of Wyoming communities and backgrounds will be published on the project website, WomeninWyoming.com, the project's social media feeds, and eventually in print (book) and traveling exhibition. The Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming is considering an exhibition proposal to debut the series in late Upon approval, Linton Buk will approach other Wyoming venues such as the Nicolaysen, the University of Wyoming Art Museum, as well as create satellite installations for rural communities across the state, furthering our mission of exposure and opportunity. Linton Buk will develop systems to track user experience and engagement with the content during the exhibition phase. Additional fundraising efforts will be put forth to fund exhibits. Upon successful implementation, Women in Wyoming encourages us all to think more deeply about taking risks, some of the realities of success in general and as a woman, and ultimately, inspire individual action to pursue one's dreams. Linton Buk will continue to interact with her audience on the project website and social media feeds, encouraging conversation and participation. Outreach amongst Wyoming communities will continue throughout production to increase visibility and encourage confidence building. Linton Buk has been invited to speak or represent the project at the following events in 2018: "Leap into Leadership," "Curvejump" in Jackson, Gillette's "Women in Business" group, the Art Association of Jackson Hole, and the Sheridan's women's conference. Linton Buk connects with local advocates during production across local Wyoming communities and organizes "Meet and Greet" coffee and cocktail networking and information events. Additional fundraising initiatives will be put forth to initiate educational outreach and mentorship amongst Wyoming women and girls. These efforts include but are not limited to: multimedia storytelling workshops, leadership conferences, and panel discussions between Lindsay and her subjects. Women in Wyoming decreases the divide between rural and urban communities, adds a strong, female voice to the media and Wyoming's cultural history, and presents Wyoming to the world in a contemporary context. The project has been shared on platforms outside of the state from Colorado's TARRA.co to Los Angeles' "She Built It" campaign. The project's podcast interviews are slated for publication on Wyoming Public Media's "Modern West" program. Google Analytics for WomeninWyoming.com have tracked user data and interaction with the project website for the two months the project has been live. Our goal of statewide and global reach has already been achieved in this short period of time. Nearly 4,000 users cross boundaries, from Wyoming and all 50 states, to the U.K, Australia, China and beyond. These users are 75% female and 25% male, spanning years old, and interact with the site at above average rates. These numbers prove that the content is relevant and resonates amongst different people and cultures. Collaboration Women in Wyoming has partnered with the non-profit Womentum. As the Fiscal Sponsor for Lindsay Linton Buk's Women in Wyoming project, Womentum believes in the scope of work and its positive impact on 2
3 Wyoming communities. Women in Wyoming and Womentum are dedicated to inspiring confidence in women to realize their full potential, emboldening women's voices, and addressing cultural undercurrents that limit women's potential. Women in Wyoming regularly communicates with other statewide organizations dedicated to helping Wyoming women thrive - from the Wyoming Women's Foundation, the Wyoming Women's Legislative Caucus, Climb Wyoming, the Youth Latina Conference, the Wind River Foundation, Wyoming Women Rise, and the Wyoming Cowbelles. The Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming is considering an exhibition proposal to debut the series late Upon approval, Linton Buk will collaborate closely with the curators and educational department of the museum to implement a powerful and compelling exhibition.
