2 01 Overview MSF is a vehicle for holding and maintaining Subud assets and for receiving donations and bequests from members and enterprises for Subud s long-term stability and security. MSF focuses on supporting Subud groups round the world to own latihan premises so that members can worship God freely. In addition, MSF supports International helpers travel to groups to ensure that groups follow the latihan in the right way. And, if it has the means, it supports the Wings. Ibu Siti Rahayu, Pamulang, March 21, MISSION The Muhammad Subuh Foundation honors the name of the founder of subud, bapak muhammad subuh sumohadiwidjojo. It serves to build a lasting financial capacity to support the long-term growth and development of subud. VISION The foundation envisages a subud community that is active and effective in the world, in many fields of human endeavor. It supports this vision by providing financial and other assistance to a wide-range of activities and programs aimed at improving the condition of the communities they serve, including social and humanitarian work, cultural endeavors, child and youth projects, and others. Bapak and Varindra (date unknown) The Muhammad Subuh Foundation s purpose is to support the long term growth and development of Subud. Established in 1991, the Foundation is named in honor of the founder of Subud, Bapak Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo, and supports Bapak s vision of a Subud association which is active and effective in the world, in all fields of human endeavor. Since 1996, the Foundation has disbursed more than $2.5 million dollars. Founded by Varindra Vittachi, a senior journalist and deputy executive director at UNICEF, Varindra also served as chairman of the World Subud Association for 25 years. Today the Foundation is managed by a Board of Trustees and executive staff and focuses on: Maintaining and holding assets (physical and financial) Receiving donations and bequests Supporting Subud groups to own latihan premises Supporting international helpers travel to Subud groups If there is sufficient financial capacity, the Foundation will support the preservation of Bapak s and Ibu Rahayu s talks, access to talks by Subud members and projects from Subud (wing) organizations. 2 1

3 02 The Meaning of the Foundation by Ibu Siti Rahayu Wiryohudoyo, 1997 One of our obligations as Subud members is to honor the name of Bapak Muhammad Subuh as the Founder of Subud, and to carry on the effort and work for fulfilling the needs of mankind in his worship of the One Almighty God, both for the requirements of this world as well as the hereafter... The Foundation was initiated by Varindra Vittachi before he died, but it seems that the purpose is still not yet well understood. Evolving the Foundation is a duty that is not easy, and there are many opinions that must be resolved for the sake of continuing the development of Subud. The Muhammad Subuh Foundation is not separate from Subud and Subud s interests. It exists as an integral part of the World Subud Association, and is a legal body whose work is to protect and develop Subud s international assets, both now and those which will be given in the future. If other Foundations can generate achievements through their groups, then we as a Subud Family should follow and gather and care for our assets so that what is small will become big and strong, acting as a support and coordinating body for the welfare and needs of us all. We, the *Trustees of the Foundation, ask for your empathy, support and help from every corner of the world so that the aims of the Muhammad Subuh Foundation will become a reality. *Ibu Rahayu was a lifetime trustee until her resignation in Bapak and party arrive in Vancouver, Canada,

4 Early Years s 1950s 1960s 1970s - 80s 1990s Today 1901 Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwijojo is born in 1901 in Kedung Jati, Central Java. By the age of 32, Bapak, as he is known, had received from God, the latihan kejiwaan or training of the soul Bapak begins his travels abroad. He is invited to England in 1957 where hundreds of people join Subud in Coombe Springs, UK. Bapak continues his world travels giving talks and explanations to members around the world. In 1963 alone, Bapak gave talks in more than 30 cities on 4 continents. Subud continues to develop including wings or associate organizations that focus on humanitarian work, enterprises and cultural endeavors. In 1971, the World Congress is opened in Cilandak by the Indonesian President. Four years after Bapak s passing, the World Subud Association establishes the Muhammad Subuh Foundation The Foundation awards nearly $200,000 in grants and loans to support ten Subud groups on five continents to obtain or renovate latihan premises. ( ) In 2011, a new project to preserve Bapak s original recordings was initiated. Many talks were in danger of deteriorating and being lost forever. The $213,000 project has just been completed and Bapak s talks have been digitized to the highest quality for Subud members today and tomorrow The first project is the latihan hall for the International Subud Center at Amanecer in Colombia, where the Ninth Subud World Congress was held in The latihan spreads in Indonesia and in the late 1940s Subud is officially registered Two years later the First World Congress in held in the UK. Some 450 members from more than 35 countries attend. In 1966, World Subud Association Chair and senior UN official, Varindra Tarzie Vittachi, has a vivid dream where he sees a large building with the words Muhammad Subuh Foundation. Inside are bequests from Subud members. Bapak confirmed the dream was a true dream but said while Bapak is still in this world it should be called SBIF In 1987, Bapak gives his last talk in Cilandak, Indonesia, just a month before his passing. On June , Bapak left this world, one day after his 86th birthday. In his lifetime, Bapak would travel some half a million miles and give more than 1,700 talks. In the coming years, the Foundation grows thanks to the generous support of Subud members around the world. More than 30 Subud groups on six continents have had grants or loans to help them develop their own Subud centers. Funds were also given to support WSA programs and Subud affiliates including SDIA and SICA. MSF grants more than $230,000 to the WSA. Most of the funds are designated for International Helper travel with smaller amounts provided for other WSA programs including Care Support/ SEF (Subud Education Fund), Subud Youth, History of Subud, Publications (Bapak s talks / translations) and Archives. 4 5

5 03 Subud Houses Partners Over one million dollars in grants and loans have been provided to more than 35 Subud groups in over 20 countries. In 2011, MSF signed two Memoranda of Understanding, one with YMS and another with YS. The MOU s established a link between the Wisma Subud properties held by two Indonesian foundations on behalf of WSA and the world Subud community. MSF partners with foundations in Colombia and Indonesia that oversee Subud properties. These include YMS (Yayasan Muhammad Subuh) which manages the Archive House and Bapak s former home in Wisma Subud (now Adi Puri) Jakarta and Yayasan Subud (YS) which owns parts of the complex including the guest house and Latihan Hall on behalf of the international Subud community. 7 Fundacion Muhammad Subuh was registered in Colombia in 1994 as the Colombia MSF branch to hold, on behalf of the international Subud community, the Gran Salon (Latihan Hall) and some land in Amanecer. In 2013, the Muhammad Subuh Foundation spent considerable time, effort and funds on restoring and managing its assets in Amanecer.

With the help of committed donors, the Foundation can continue its work to support the long term development and growth of Subud throughout the world. Your donation can be directed to the general fund or you may wish to set up your own fund. You may also give to one or more of the following established funds. Funds : The Foundation currently has four established funds which it manages on behalf of the Subud community: The General Fund : For Subud houses, preservation of Bapak s and Ibu s talks, International Helpers travel, and administration. Bapak Legacy Fund: Supports the long term growth and development of Subud. Francois & Lucienne Farkas Fund: Supports Bapak s talks and disadvantaged children/youth.
