3 BRIEF OVERVIEW The African Languages Association of Southern Africa (ALASA) is the official body in the Southern African region, concerned with the coordination of scientific research on African linguistics and literature and the teaching of African languages. The membership of ALASA includes, but is not limited to, African language/linguistic/literature academics, language specialists/practitioners and curriculum planners. ALASA organises biennial international Conferences, of which the 18 th conference is scheduled to take place from the 24 th to 26 th of June, 2015 at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. These conferences are graced by the attendance of scholars and researchers of African languages/linguistics/literatures from all over the African continent as well as academics and researchers from Europe and the United States of America. This international conference will be one, amongst a few gatherings, in which delegates will attempt to, as noted in the conference theme, focus on applied research and innovation with particular emphasis on developmental initiatives that relate to our social, political, economic and educational situations. DETAILS OF CONFERENCE Proposals for paper presentations, workshops, interactive sessions, posters/exhibitions are invited to the 2015 ALASA international conference. The conference will address a range of critically important themes in the various language related fields. Plenary sessions will include presentations by some of the world s leading thinkers in the humanities, as well as numerous papers, workshop and colloquium presentations by academics and researchers. The purpose of the conference is to attract scholars and researchers from a variety of disciplines and to bring together a cohort of established and emerging researchers in one assembly to deliberate on topics related to the theme and sub-themes. AIMS OF THE CONFERENCE To present an opportunity for researchers in African languages, linguistics and literature to explore issues relating to the practice of effective language and communication services for the African languages in the corporate, government and education sectors. To create an opportunity for researchers of African languages to interact with practitioners and education specialists for African languages in order to explore the relationship between current research and practice relating to the African languages

4 in the fields of education, language and communication services in multilingual contexts. To determine specific areas of research that need stimulation to provide an appropriate basis for applied research in the practice of language and technology, language development, language and the law, language and communication services, and language education for African languages that will contribute to quality services in a multilingual context. To create the opportunity for researchers and practitioners of African languages to establish possibilities for collaboration in a variety of areas with the aim to contribute towards the advancement of the use and the promotion of the status of the African languages. THEME OF THE CONFERENCE New directions and perspectives in African language research in the 21 st century The above title will embrace contributions from a wide spectrum of research on African languages and cultures, from a historical perspective (reflections on what has been achieved so far towards the development of African languages and cultures) and future prospects (projections on how current research can impact on future developments). Sub-themes include but are not confined to the following areas: Language planning and policy in Africa Language and Education Language, Business and Economics Language and Human Resources Language in Law Language in society Language and ideologies Language and gender Language and the media Language and health Multilingualism, multiculturalism and globalisation General linguistics Historical/ Comparative linguistics Phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, discourse analysis, pragmatics Computational linguistics Human language technology (HLT)

7 CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS Two conference workshops will be organised during the afternoon (14:00 17:00) of Wednesday, 25, Proposals for workshops ( words) should include: 1. The title of the workshop 2. A brief description of the specific issues that the workshop will address 3. The reasons why the workshop is of interest to conference delegates 4. The names and affiliations, postal addresses, phone numbers and addresses of the organising committee of the specific workshop which should consist of at least two academics knowledgeable in the field, coming from different institutions 5. The name and the address of the member of the workshop organising committee designated as the contact person 6. A summary of the intended call for participation in the specific workshop 7. An estimate of the approximate audience size 8. A list of audio-visual or technical requirements and any special room requirements The workshop proposers will be responsible for the organisational aspects (e.g. preparation of workshop call, distribution of call (via the ALASA Organising Committee), review of abstracts, notification of acceptance, submitting accepted abstracts to main conference organising committee).
