14 Science Foundation Ireland Name of Scheme: Royal Society-Science Foundation Ireland University Research Fellowship (URF) Who can apply: Must have a PhD (note applicants who have just submitted their PhD will not be considered) Must have between 3 to 8 years of research experience since their PhD by the closing date of the round Must not hold a permanent post in a university or not-for-profit organization in the European Economic Area (EEA) Must be a citizen of the EEA or a Swiss citizen (or have a relevant connection to the EEA or Switzerland) Budget/Duration: The scheme provides a salary contribution based on the SFI Research Fellow scale (Level 3). Research expenses (up to 15,000 for the first year and up to 13,000 annually thereafter) will also be provided. Funding is for five years (+3). This scheme is for outstanding scientists in the Republic of Ireland who are in the early stages of their research career and have the potential to become leaders in their field. The scheme covers all areas of the life and physical sciences, including engineering, but excluding clinical medicine and any researcher addressing a direct biomedical question. Currently closed.
15 Science Foundation Ireland Name of Scheme: SFI Starting Investigator Research Grant (SIRG) Who can apply: Must have between 3 to 8 years of research experience since their PhD Must be senior author (first, last or corresponding) on at least 3 primary research articles in international peer-reviewed publications Must not hold /held a significant independent internationally peer reviewed research award of greater than one-year duration/ 100K direct costs (note some exceptions). Must not hold a faculty position Must have a mentor Budget/Duration: SIRG awards have a maximum value of 400,000 direct costs (including SI salary and funding for a p/g student) for a period of four years. This programme aims to support excellent postdoctoral researchers and others who are yet to hold an independent research post in taking the initial steps towards a fully independent research career. Each HEI is restricted with respect to number of applications. In 2015, each HEI could only submit 12 applications. Does not run annually. Next expected call in Success rate ~ 19% nationally, Trinity secured 5 of the 20 SIRG 2015 awards.
16 Science Foundation Ireland Name of Scheme: SFI Technology Innovation Development Award (TIDA) Who can apply: A) An SFI Award Holder OR B) A lead Principal Investigator (PI) responsible for a competitively awarded, internationally peer reviewed research grant secured in the last 5 years OR C) A Postdoctoral Research ( 8 years postdoctoral experience) currently funded under a competitively awarded, internationally peer reviewed research grant Must be a member of the academic staff of an eligible Research Body (permanent or with a contract that covers the period of the TIDA), OR a contract researcher with a contract that covers the period of the TIDA Must hold a PhD/MD or equivalent Must be senior author on at least 3 international peer-reviewed articles. Must be committed to work 100% on the TIDA award Must be endorsed by the PI on the qualifying award Budget/Duration: 100,000 direct costs for a period of one year. Contribution towards own salary is allowed. The TIDA programme is designed to enable researchers to focus on the first steps of an applied research project which may have a commercial benefit if further developed. TCD success rate %. Previous (slightly different call - > 50%. Currently closed.
17 Science Foundation Ireland Name of Scheme: SFI Industry Fellowships Who can apply: Must hold a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent Must be senior author on at least 3 international peer-reviewed articles Must be a member of the academic staff or a contract researcher Must either be an SFI award holder or recent award holder OR a PI who has demonstrated research independence OR a postdoctoral researcher/fellow h older Budget/Duration: or recent SFI award holder Fellowships can be for between 1 and 12 months in duration if full time or for up to 24 months if part time. The maximum Industry Fellowship award amount is 100,000 direct costs.. The purpose of the Industry Fellowship programme is to facilitate the bi-directional movement of academic and industry researchers. Fellowships can be awarded to academic researchers wishing to spend time in industry worldwide and to individuals from industry anywhere in the world (including Ireland) wishing to spend time in an eligible Irish Research Body. Trinity s success rate very high in the past (although this scheme is relatively low and subscription rates not high. Call currently open (closes 2 nd December).
18 Science Foundation Ireland Name of Scheme: SFI Fellowship Programme Who can apply: i) A team member currently funded through a SFI award, or ii) A member of staff currently working in a relevant research administrative office of an eligible Research Body iii) Non SFI Funded researchers currently on a contract in an eligible research body. It is the expectation that the applicant may be at a natural break between projects or nearing the end of their contract. Budget/Duration: Salary for a period of up to three years, continuous and full-time The purpose of the programme is to provide successful candidates with the opportunity to develop their career through experiencing and participating in first-hand, the diversity of activities carried out by a funding agency. These activities include but are not limited to; the processes involved in the initiation, development and implementation of internationally peer reviewed funding programmes; post award management of SFI investments; specification, design and implementation of the IT awards management system; administration of grants, liaising with Industry partners and others, and general. 30 Health Research Board Name of Scheme: Research Training Fellowships for Healthcare Professionals Who can apply: i) Health and social care professionals (list given in call documents) ii) Must hold a relevant degree iii) Must have proof of eligibility to practice iv) Must have at least 24 months relevant clinical practice prior to 5 th November 2015 Budget/Duration: Three years full-time (six years part-time) funding towards salary and related costs, student fees, running costs, dissemination and knowledge exchange costs, training costs and a travel grant to gain research experience abroad. The objective of this PhD fellowship programme is to provide 3 years full-time (6 years part-time) funding to health and social care professionals, who are individuals of outstanding potential, early in their research careers, who can maximise the opportunity of being supported through a customised research training programme in an environment reflecting their individual talents and training needs. It is anticipated that successful applicants will become independent research leaders within six to 10 years of completing a HRB Research Training Fellowship for Healthcare Professionals.
